Just diagnosed w/Type 2 Diabetes:(

I was just diagnosed yesterday with T2. Anyone else on this journey with T2 and can shed some light? Don’t have a doctors app till January. Numbers weren’t horribly high but high enough I guess.

Yes, I was a dozen years ago with an A1C of 5.9 put me in the pre-diabetes column and I was about 60 lbs overweight and with a few other health issues that where symptomatic of that elevated blood sugar.

I focused on what I could control and what eventually worked almost immediately was removing sugar from my diet. And removing sugar I mean I removed most carbs, all carbs are sugar basically. At that time I basically reduced my carbs to around 125 grams a day, then a few months later to around 100, and soon after, around 4 months my A1C was 5.6 and 6 months later it was 5.5, now i hover around 5 and dip below regularly, yes I actively check my blood sugar levels and I have used CGM many times over the years. I've since reduced my carbs further most of the time, although I do consume lots of carbs on occasion, I do love bread and pasta's but never do I consume desserts or sugary processed things, that is a no no for me personally, blueberries is my go to.

If you research lower carb and diabetes the evidence is overwhelmingly a no brainer. I've always engaged in sports (hockey and golf) and weight trained so that wasn't an issue but doing that can help reduced blood sugar as well, so I would encourage some type of activity and weight training is in my opinion non negotiable if a person wants to be mobile in their older years, I'm 71 and still continue to play my sports, hockey season just got underway.

Anyway it's really not that complicated stopping the progression or even reversing diabetes and I would suggest you research low carb as it pertains to diabetes if this intrigues you. A whole food diet like a Mediterranean diet can also be very effective, not as impactful as low carb but still a decent intervention simply because most refined and sugary carbs are discontinued, and if your going to actively change your diet, if that is a factor for you then I would also say to focus on protein and it's quality simply because you'll need to make up thos carb calories with something. The obvious choice with a low carb diet is animal protein simply because they don't contain carbs and if your diet is more plant based then your going to have to embrace soy products. I can get into the science of diabetes if you like, just ask.

Totally agree with Neanderthal. I’m also 71 and try to stay active every day and move! In addition, I, too, lowered my carbs to 100 grams or under and limit sugars as much as I possibly can. Every food has carbohydrates even lettuce (!) and I learned the value of good vs not so good carbs. My blood sugars respond accordingly to my diet. I read a lot and find Diabetes Self Management website and magazine very helpful.
