I am sort of new here. (I did this a year or so ago, but it all looks different now - maybe a good thing!)

I am a retired grandmother of 2 wonderful boys. I am very active in my church, and I love crafting. Right now, I am learning how to paint watercolors. Now that swimming season is almost over 😢 - I need to find some less sedentary hobbies (for someone with bad knees.)

Hello and welcome back!

I've been here for 11+ years, loss (around 50 pounds) then maintenance since. I like crafting, too, and have been doing some watercolor experimenting too, though I can't say I'm very disciplined about it. 😆 It's in the context of a mixed-media visual journaling hobby.

I also have bad knees, arthritis and at least one torn meniscus. Each person's knee problems are going to differ in what is doable (maybe with some discomfort) vs. what makes the overall situation worse. For me, I learned through cautious experimentation that it's safe for me to do activities that involve straight-line hinging of my knees and pressure (even strong pressure). Things that involve twisting or fast changes of direction (like say pickleball) or impact: Not good. My main things are rowing (boats and machine) and cycle (paved trails and machine). I can also do some strength training exercises, but not every single possible one. Yoga is mostly OK, swimming is OK. But that's me.

Have you had physical therapy for your knees? Good physical therapists have been super helpful for me in figuring out what I actually can do, and making sure I understand how to do the movements to avoid making things worse. If that's something your doctor would refer you for, it might be worth a try. Their main focus is remedial exercises, but the ones I've had have been very good about answering my questions about what other exercises I can safely do and how I can safely do them.
