I've posted this before and I will post it again

Different people will be in different clothes sizes even if they are the same height and weight. Enter your height and weight on this site and see how different people can be.

I was reading someone's posting here that she weighed in the 290's and was happy to be into Size 20.
I found this hard to believe because I am now at 250, and I wear a 24 loosely, but 22 is still too tight. (I am 5'3")
(most of my clothes are from mid-range stores like JCPenneys, Kohls)
She might read this, and I don't mean to offend you, it's just perplexing that you can weight 40 pounds more than me and be 2 sizes smaller. And maybe thats because I don't like things really tight that there isn't just one size difference.

Anyway, I thought it might be interesting and motivating to play What Size, What Weight, and maybe even what height if that matters. If you tracked it during your weight loss, that would be interesting too.

of course height matters! if that woman is 6 inches taller than you then its stands to reason that she will be able to fit into a smaller size at a heavier weight.
  • When I was just over 300lbs I wore a 24. I'm in a 12/14 now 70lbs later. I'm 6ft tall.

I weigh 285, am 5'6" and am fitting into either 22's or 20's depending on the style, though I do still have some 24's that fit too. It is body shape and build, as I have a big frame so hold my weight differently than some others might.

    I'm 5'9, and at 180 pounds I started off at a size 10.
i'm currently 153 and wear between a 4-6... and even my 6's are getting to be way to big!

I think it all depends on the person, their shape and the brand.. I never ever though I would fit into a 4, and low and behold I did!

This confuses me too. I see people who are saying they are heavier than me but getting in sizes 10,12, I thought maybe they mean US sizes and they are different?

I was 12st 7 in June and in 20's I found 18's dig in around waist and tops of legs and as I'm sat all day in wheelchair its really uncomfortable.

I recently got some 16 jog pants (now at 160lbs: 11st 6) .. I can get in them but I still feel they make my tummy look bigger as they are 'lady fit' so very fitted around the top.. I'm saving them until I lose a few more inches around my tummy and still wearing my 18's which for me have just reached the 'comfy all day' stage!

I also find clothes easier to get into if they are slightly baggy than skin tight, tops needs some room around the arms or they tend to rip at seams under armpits with me propelling my chair so I'm still in 18-20 tops to give me space to move!

    Hi,

I'm 5'5'', 200 pounds, and I wear a size 18 top and pants 16 when in plus size stores. When in regular stores size 20 top and 18 pants.
  • I'm 5''9 and weigh 191 lbs, I'm a size 16 in the uk so think that's a US size 12 (wow that makes me feel better, size 12 size sounds way better!!)

Body frame, body shape, and height -- all play a huge roll in the size you wear. Weight really doesn't factor in much at all (which makes me wonder why so many of us use it to gauge our fitness success.)

You can completely reshape your body without affecting your weight much. I need only look at myself about 7 years ago. I'm 5'9, and I was at the same weight that I am now (around the 210 mark) - at that time I was in a 18/20 and sometimes a 22... now I'm in a 14/16. And yet I'm the same weight! The difference is: now I'm more toned, feel much better, and have more energy. So long as you are eating healthy and exercising, you WILL get results...regardless of what the scale says (it's such an *empty* number).

I am 5'7" and pear shaped so I will always wear a bigger size than a woman the same height with no hips or butt. I have kept track all along in my profile, this is a copy and paste:

    February 15, 2011- I joined MFP @ 175 pounds (size 14 US)
    March 15, 2011: 167.2 pounds (size 12)
    April 15, 2011: 160.2 pounds (size 12)
    May 15, 2011: 159.2 pounds (size 12)
    June 15, 2011: 157.4 pounds (size 12/10).
    July 15, 2011: 154 pounds (size 10)
    August 15, 2011: 151.4 pounds (size 10)
    September 15, 2011: 147.6 pounds (size 10/8)
    October 15, 2011: 146.7 pounds (size 8)

I didn't lose much weight in September/October but lost a pants size. I think this was due to me stepping up my pilates class. The core muscle building really leaned me up! I should also add that I started off in L/XL tops and now wear mediums pretty consistently.
  • Toning will definitely help. And don't worry about what other people wear. Focus on you and your journey. This is 100% about you and your life. You'll get there.

I'm 5'7", 157 pounds, and I can't find a pair of jeans that fit... (US) size 14 is way, way too big but size 12 is too tight. Sigh.

I agree with what people have said about the differences in body shape, body composition, height, etc., all play a factor. And it also depends on what brand of clothing you are buying. In fact, I once bought a size 10 and a size 12 in the same brand, same style, and they were basically the same size; if anything the 12's were more snug.

I'm 5'6, 170-172 pounds and wear L or XL tops, 10 to 14 sized pants and size 10 dresses.

    So weird right?

I'm apple shaped (at least right now) though-- the most unfortunate fruit shape!

currently wearing size 10 perfectly and some size 8`s but they are still abit snug but I`m getting really close

I'm 5'9" and my highest weight ever was 240. I was never above a size 16, so it just depends on your body shape and proportions. Right now I'm 163 and wearing loose 8's & 6's..

Ya I am about the same! I am 5'4", started at 218 and in size 20 pants. I have an hourglass figure, for the most part, but having kids did a number on my stomach so I think that helpes to put me in bigger sizes as well.

  • It's all about shape! I'm 5'3" and when I was at 256lbs I was wearing a size 18 pant. Right now at 202lbs I am wearing a loose size 14 pant.

    it's mostly body type.

i currently weigh abt 193lbs but wear a size 12. i'm 5"5 1/4" tall & have an hourglass shaped figure. i can almost wear my size8 jeans. i'm literally abt 4inches from gettin them over my behind.

    when i was 248lbs i wore a size 22/24.

so it may take me abt another 10-15lbs in order for me 2 actually wear a size8 jeans. so at abt 175lbs i could wear that whereas some1 else may b in a size 12.

it's all abt body type i believe.

    Height matters....

I am 166lbs and wear a Size 6 pant at 5'10". Someone considerably shorter would wear a 12/14 at that weight.
I'm the same size pant as you, but I'm 5'8" and 145 lbs.

I weigh about 15-20 pounds more than I did in high school, and can fit into my old clothes. My lean muscle mass is heavier now.

On the other hand, I'm also wearing a pair of jeans right now that I wore when I weighed 35 pounds more than I do now. They're stretch denim, and I need a belt now or they'll come right off my hips, where they were like second skin last year, but they're still wearable.

    Hi there,

It's about several factors such as:

    1) Body shape
    2) Preference for how clothes fit
    3) Manufacturer - is a poor, fair or good one? How close do they follow specification?
    4) Purchasing/supply chain - how were things negotiated when the line was purchased for the store? For example, the manufacturer above could have just labelled liberally to move stock without the buyer being aware
    5) MARKETING - some stores want you to feel good about your purchase and will increase the size of the spec for clothing without changing the label. I know this seems devious, but it does happen. For example, consider being a size 16/18 - following the trend for weight gain in westernised countries, when you gain weight and go up in size, you will potentially be a lost customer when you transition your purchasing habits to stores which specialise in bigger clothes like Lane Bryant in the USA. Rather than lose you as a customer, it's easier to just adjust the size of the clothing without changing the label. So you could be a 16 when you're really a 20....

It's therefore probably not of much use to share sizes versus weight as there are so many factors to influence a difference for everyone, so don't be upset about the other lady and be happy with you :)

    Best,
    Jennifer

I am currently 26 years old, 5'8.5", 266 pounds and wear an 18/20 or 22/24 top depending on the cut, style and the store. I wear a 22 dress pant/jean. (I even wore that size when I was 285 pounds at my non-pregnancy heaviest last year.) I do most of my shopping at Lane Bryant, Old Navy, and JC Penny. Now, when I was 23 years old I was 255 pounds and wore an 18/20 top and a 20 dress pant/jean. I carry my weight proportionately (minus my upper arms hence the reason why I sometimes have to go up in size in tops...I wish they made a 20/22 or that all tops were solid sizes like bottoms are because then I would most likely wear a 22 on top) but just recently had a baby and still have some stretched out belly skin and have limited time to work out due to being a full time working mommy and then going home and taking care of my baby (at the end of the day I am too tired to work out and dont have time to do it in the day time) I know that if I were to get some toning done I would be a 20 or very close to it.
  • I have always wondered about sizes and weights. I have friends that are the exact same height; however they weight less and wear at least 4 sizes bigger. Anyway...I am 5' 6.5", 227 and sizes are crazy. Tops L-XXL (larger chest) Workout clothes M-L Jeans depends on brand American Eagle 12/14R Aeropostale 15 Old Navy 10/12 other brands are 13/15
A little back story of why I have wondered (other than friends): When I was in high school I weighed 60 lbs less and wore only 1 size smaller.
