Hi everyone.
I know most women have a problem with gaining weight on their hips and thighs, but for me it's the opposite. I seem to be losing weight around my hips quite nicely now, but not from my chest and arms. I'm developing what dieting magazines call a 'heart shaped' body.
I like walking which is helping to tone up my legs, but I'm neglecting my upper body as I have issues with my back.

Does anyone have any tips on how to lose weight on top half of my body?
I'm afraid of weights, as I'm worried they might add bulk to the tops of my arms? Which is the last thing I need right now.

Women don't gain bulk, they tone. Lift weights.

I have the same type of body. Don't be afraid of weights, you will not bulk up. Lifting weights will add more lean muscle to your upper body and since muscle is denser than fat, you will look slimmer.

just keep doing cardio, you will naturally lose weight from certain areas first, everyone is different! There's really no way to spot reduce, but you can do toning exercises.....

unfortunately you cant spot reduce. you just have to reduce all over. I am bottom heavy and the first thing that goes on me are boobs and waist. so i try not to over leg weights but you still have to weight train your entire body or you could throw something out of whack.

Don't be afraid of weights, you'd have to be lifting pretty heavy to "bulk up". I'd say some weights, planks and push ups....these will all help you tone everything up and shed the inches covering the muscles :o)

I wish there was a way to spot reduce. I'm small on the top and I have wide hips and chunky thighs lol! I learn't to live with it..... all I can do is try to tone it so there is less jiggle...I'm always gonna be bigger at the bottom

Just keep losing weight. If you are an apple, you will lose your arm and chest weight last. Definitely consider some arm, shoulder and chest exercises with light dumbbells or other upper body calisthenics to help tone your arms and chest. If you don't you will probably end up with that undesired bat-wing effect which only makes those parts of you that have lost a lot of fat look bigger and flabbier.

It is just a myth that women bulk up! We are not made to bulk up, weights will be good for you and keep your cardio going too. :)

I am top heavy just like my mother, grandmother, aunts and sisters. It is genetic for us. I have accepted that it is what it is. I know that if I can keep losing weight it will eventually come off of my top part where I look more proportioned - at least I hope so. It is really hard to get good fitting clothes when one is cursed with this shape.

    Hey Lynn

have to agree and say that you could try some toning exercise
you dont have to jump right in with weights tins of something in
each hand will have the same effect
if you fancy doing press ups do them against a wall it wont hurt your back
if its to easy step a bit more away from the wall and put one foot over the other
and try that it makes it a bit harder
our keep fit instructor got me and one of the other girls to do that

you will get there your doing an amazing job

It's a matter of time. Like you, I lose from my legs and hips first. It wasn't until I got very close to goal weight before it started coming off my arms and bust.

I'm not a woman (obviously my photo & name might give that away a bit), but I'm carrying a bit of weight on top following years of upperbody sports (rugby, squash, canoeing etc) and then nothing like that for about 10years, so muscle turned to flab.

After 3 weeks of using Cable weights (in my gym), dumbells/kettle and a TRX strap I am starting to notice a reduction in size - already 1.5" off my chest. I know men are built different, but for toning, I do fairly easy weights (a bit of a struggle), but higher reps with limited rest in between sets and alternate between them as well. The TRX strap is quite good at home, you don't feel like you're doing much to being with, but you do feel it..

Hope that helps in anyway... all the best and good luck..

Try the 30 Day Shred, I'm apple shaped (skinny hips and legs, ample boobs and tummy), I'm finding that it rapidly shrinks you all over and is fantastic for sculpting arms. As everyone else has already said, resistance training will not make you bulky, only leaner.
