Take your time. Do it for the endurance then go for speed

Make sure you have a Banana before you run for your out put of energy, and wear a 1/2 size larger running shoe for when your feet swell from the running. Set a pace you are comfortable with and can maintain. Don't start out to strong, you might not be able to hold out. Good Luck, Great Job, Enjoy, It Is A GREAT feeling once you are finished no matter where you finish in the line. Go For It!!!!:blushing:

Congrats on this. I am a running coach part time...If you haven't ran in a long time I reccommend trying a walk/run method and gradually increasing your run to walk ratio over time. Jeff Galloway has a great website and a training schedule for a 5k www.jeffgalloway.com

Also, make sure you have good running shoes, hydrate before, during, and after you run, stretch after (not before) you run...and make sure to eat something or supplment within 30 minutes after you run.

I also reccommend walking for 5 minutes before and after you run..

Good luck and happy running. It is great exercise

I haven't ran since playing basketball in highschool which was like 9-10 years ago
So last week I got my *kitten* on the treadmill and started- I first alternated 2 minutes jog 3 minute walk and continued to do that-

Later on that week I would jog for 5 minutes and walk for 2 minutes and continued on for a mile-

Now today (just a week later) I jogged a full mile non-stop- Yes it was a slow mile I need to shave minutes off my time- But before I kick up my speed I need to work on my endurance
I want to be able to jog longer than I will go faster.

    Good luck on your 5k-

    Try checking out coolrunning.com

or google couch to 5k if you are a beginner to running.

I did a triathlon 2 years ago and decided to do one again this year. I am a HORRIBLE runner. Really bad. I did walk a little but I think the most important thing is to have really upbeat music and keep telling yourself things like "1/4 way done, only 1/2 way to go, 5 minutes left" etc. It really does help! Just start running as long as you can and try and improve it each day, even if only 30 seconds. Every little big helps!

Good luck! And good for you for doing a 5k!

I just started running at the end of last week. My 5K is on July 5th. I searched for couch to 5k plans as a training program. The easiest one to follow that I found was Hal Higdon's 5K Training Program: Novice. http://www.halhigdon.com/5K Training/5-Knovice.htm
Depending on your current fitness level you may be able to jump into this training program. This particular one is 8 weeks long and for me finishes right on race day.

Good luck in your training and in your 5K.

The most important thing you can do is to get fitted for a good running shoe. Go to a running store and have them film your gait & follow their recommendation. They may "recommend" the most expensive shoe, but let them know what your price range is & they will work with you.

Running is fun, but if you start out with wrong shoes/clothes/bras then you won't want to stick with it.

    Good luck! :flowerforyou:

please visit a running store and get fitted for a good running shoe... When I ran my first half marathon, my toenail fell off!

Also run at your own pace, the ultimate race is yours and finishing feels so good!

It is something you have to build up to - some people get fustrated at first because it takes a little time to enhance your cardiovascular fitness. You might try and do walk/run ntervals at first to improve your endurance. Treamills can be boring (although they serve a purpose sometimes) so try and mix it up a little. Get out and enjoy the nice weather and try not to focus so much on having to go a certain distance or a certain speed.
