"Students protested at Durango High School yesterday. But the demonstration wasn't on behalf of Occupy Wall Street or world peace or any of those mundane subjects that get people's drawers in a bunch.

No, this was about whether Durango High School can reject a yearbook photo of senior Sydney Spies on account of sexiness.

As reported by the Durango Herald, DHS students have until Friday to submit a photo for the yearbook. Problem is, the one Spies prefers shows her wearing a teensy black shawl and a short-short skirt that displays plenty of leg, à la the sort of vixens that used to pop up on car hoods in '80s-era metal videos.

This request put school officials in an uncomfortable position, since there's apparently no formal policy in regard to yearbook photos. So the powers-that-be rejected the image based on it violating the school dress code, which calls for tops that "fully cover the chest, back, abdomen and sides of the student."

That didn't fly with Spies, who organized a rally at the school yesterday to denounce the decision in advance of a meeting with administrators scheduled for tomorrow. Among the attendees was her mom, Miki, who not only supports her daughter's quest, but says she plans to consult a Denver-based attorney to explore their legal options.

    I read this yesterday. The first picture is a tad too revealing for a school yearbook but her second picture was pretty cute. I wonder what the hell her mom was thinking by having these taken and what she is still thinking by wasting time and money fighting it.

    Working in education, dress code applies to school functions as well as the normal school, and even though it isn't spelled out in school policy, that would likely include the yearbook. Some people need to get over themselves, and this student is one of them. I hope her and the mother get laughed out of the courtroom.

    It's high school, her free speech rights are already tempered, get over it... She's beautiful, but really? I don't think I'd ever let my daughter go to school dressed like that... Thank God I have 2 boys and another boy on the way...

    Oh good lord. Shame on her mother.

    And But... when I was in HS, it was VERY popular to have similar pictures done. You'd wet your hair down and take pictures with your hair all over your face blah blah blah. In hindsight, they look absolutely stupid and thank GOD my mother never ordered any nor did they see the light of day past my proof book.

    Forget that the girl is obviously going to sleep with someone to star in an Activia commercial someday...why was her mom at the little protest for support of her picture?

    If this is important enough to them to litigate, I'd say they have a pretty sad life. What a waste of time, energy, and money.

    The family is getting the PR they want. She'll be on a realtiy tv show before she takes her first college class.

    Why do they get to choose and submit a photo? Ever school yearbook I have seen uses the class photos and the single shots done by the studio photographer hired by the school. The candids are reviewed to be sure they're appropriate, you know, no fipping of the bird, mooning, PDA etc...It's not a personal ad...

    umm... my mom would have KILLED me if I showed up to my Senior pictures in that! haha That's way too much. My school has guideline for the one that had to e in the yearbook. It could just be a head shot. If you didn't have one taken, your picture didn't go in the yearbook.

    That's exactly what I was thinking, how did the school photographer even TAKE this shot? And if it's from an outside studio it shouldn't be allowed in the yearbook. The only time I can think of a photo being submitted by the parents is for seniors in the back of the yearbook and those are usually cute (and embarrassing) baby pictures. Not something like this. I hope they sue and the school wins.

    I was a yearbook adviser at one point in my life and insisted that the only images that would make the book were simple head and shoulders photos. No posing with your dog, shotgun, or car. In retrospect, I wish I had allowed those kids to do the more personal shots because it told a story about them.

    Senior pictures are always done by private photographer not the school photographer unless the student can not afford to do those and just goes with the one you get taken infront of that cool grey backdrop.

    As a mother I would never let my daughter take a photo like this for her senior pictures! That is extremely inappropriate...it literally looks like the college addition of Playboy (no joke my husband used to have a subscription for the longest time)
