When do you actually congratulate someone on their update
Just for friday gossip
When would you congratulate someone on their update:
1. If they have burnt more than x calories in workout on that day.
2. If they have lost x lbs from previous weigh in.
3. If they have had an exceptionally nutritious day.
I have seen people congratulating/commenting on profile even for things like burning 1/3 of their normal workout routine, or having just a normal day for food etc. etc.
Do you feel its still motivational and inspirational? Or it just p****s you off?
PS:
1. I would comment someone if they had their normal or above normal workout, even nag them when they don't and would love the similar comments vice-versa.
2. This post is not intended for ppl on my friends list as I like them all.

I am happy to seem my friends logging in and keeping up with their updates on a daily basis, it lets me know that they are serious about getting healthy and that is something that is to be commended. I don't comment on every single update, but the ones that stand out, I do. The fact that people log and update (even the small thingss that they do) is worth commending because that means that they are not giving up, or being lazy...
So yeah, if someone puts that they walked 20 minutes and burned 80 calories, I will commend them, even if the day before they walked 60 minutes and burned 200 calories. They could have just sat on their *kitten* and done nothing. Every little bit counts!0 -

Well, yeah! that's another valid view of looking at the things.0 -
I don't usually congratulate unless it's a huge calorie burn or a weight loss post (unless they post weigh-in's more than once a week - then I don't usually congratulate). I do always read the posts my friends make though.
Though it doesn't bother me when people do. I think it's nice of them to support others.0 -

Something that does irk me is when I accidentally complete my diary after only eating like 200cals and you get comments like wtg etc. It really makes me feel like if I eat anymore im a fat pig. Probably because i have a weird relationship with food but it really messes me up.
I generally congratulate on any weight loss, on a particularly nommy and nutritious diary or a good burn for them, or sometimes just for consistency.0 -
I don't really have a guideline, I just comment stuff I feel I can respond to. Weight loss and Logging streaks for sure. I usually ignore the diary updates unless something catches my eye when I look at it. I avoid the more feminine posts, like shark week ha0
-
I really only comment if people had a nice calorie burn/did a good exercise or had weight loss. Don't see the point of congratulating someone on "light cleaning" on on "completing their diary for the day"0

Most people probably don't actually look at the diaries, if someone says wtg when you ate 200 cals, they obviously didn't...heh0 -
I have a problem when someone closes off their diary for the day, and a bunch of people all say, "Great job!" etc, and when I look at their diary, all they had was coffee for breakfast and they didn't eat dinner and had a net of about 600 that day. I don't comment on those (although sometimes I'd like to ).
If someone burns any amount of calories I'll commend them because it is better than nothing. Same goes for any amount of a weight loss.0 -
I commend on any weight lost and any calories burned.
I don't commend on diary completed because I know for myself when I complete and people say "way to go!" and then I decide to eat a little something else.. even if I'm under my goal it makes me feel sort of guilty like I've let them down or something. So, I don't tend to comment on diary completions. That and it just makes it too much work to comment on all that too. I rarely even hit the complete button anymore anyway even when I have stopped for the day.
Otherwise if they say something outside the usual automatic updates I'll comment only if I have something to add to what they're talking about.
I know people just do the "way to go!, terrific!" stuff en masse as I often do but it still helps. When I do a big burn and get a lot of comments of "way to go" and stuff it does make me feel good/supported. And even when I comment en masse I'm still happy my friends are working out and losing weight.0 -
Whenever you feel like it. I know I like any and all compiments, it's nice to know people out there are concerned and watching my progress.0

I try to comment on as many "calories burnt," "weight lost" and "days logged in" updates as possible - to me, that means that person is committed to making a positive change to themselves. It doesn't matter to me if they burnt '100 calories cleaning' or '10,000 calories mountaineering' - they have got off their butts and been motivated enough to do something towards their goal. I hope all my friends find me supportive and encouraging...whether it's a generic "well done" or a more personal statement - I always mean what I say!!
To be honest, I very rarely congratulate on "diary completed" entries. I will sometimes make a comment if someone has left a comment themselves about their own especially good or bad day because then people obviously need reassurance or advice - but in general, I think completing the food diary is something that we should all be doing everyday anyway to make the most of the website, so I don't see it as being particulary 'special' to have completed your diary at the end of the day.
With regards to people's general comments...well, that just depends on if I have something of value to add - or if I can relate to what they have said. I don't really have any rules here...0 -

You can always change your settings so that your diary completion isn't shown in the news feed.0 -
I congratulate or say good job or great work etc, all the time. I don't care if they burned less than X amount of calories, if they completed their day under their calorie goal I am going to say well done, why wouldn't I? It takes 2 seconds of my time, and I remember when I first started on MFP and I would complete my day or update my exercise etc, and people said way to go and well done, it made me feel good and motivated me.0

Couldn't have put it better myself!0 -

Same here.. I don't necessarily comment on other people's stuff too often but I appreciate every comment I get!0 -

this....and thats one of the reasons you are my friend and the smile might help a lil too0 -
I comment on good nutritional days if I can see the diary. I just feel its an empty jesture if not.
Plus any weight loss is good weight loss in my book so I comment on those as well0 -
Just use these phrases as needed...
"Is that all?"
"Come on; this sucks..."
"Just give up before you fail"
"YOU are PATHETIC"
"So weak..a total miscarriage."
"I smell inadequacy"
"How disappointing you are"
I have plenty.
I heard them all growing up....:huh:0 -

I think sometime we may forget that 'light cleaning' maybe a big deal to someone who was very over weight or inactive - i try and make positive comments to everyone on their exercise
I always comment on weight loss - thats mainly what we are here for and every loss should be applauded
I dont always have time to comment on food diaries as i never comment if i have not looked at them - i would never comment on someones diary that i could not see but was under their target as i may be encouraging dangerously low calories comsumption or unhealth/unbalenced diet
Just my thoughts
Happy Friday :flowerforyou:0 -

LOL. true. Sometimes people just congratulate just to be social or get attention or whatever I don't know. Some people just don't read the diaries before commenting.0 -

Ditto!!!0 -
It depends on the person. A person struggling to get or stay on track is worthy of praise for just keepig to calorie goal, while the gym junkies need to do much much more for their pat on the back0

I don't comment or congratulate on diary entries...
I don't congratulate on cleaning or short walks - I mean, in real life if someone said "I did laundry and cleaned my kitchen this weekend" - would you say congratulations? I would not. I also do not congratulate on short walks - just like if my friend ran to the store - I don't say congratulations when they come back. I guess I only make the type of comments I would make to any dieting friend in real life.
I congratulate on weight loss and comment/congratulate on exercise - especially exercise I'm in envy of.0 -
I comment on Consecutive log ins because it shows commitment.
I comment on weight loss.
I rarely comment on food diaries. I can't tell you if the numbers are correct or not. Plus the fudge factor of exercise calories... I have no idea if the number is good or bad.
I read comments, and sometimes comment on the entries.
Rarely on workouts. because I don't know how accurate it is. I know MFP is way off for me. and the FitBit fudge factor in MFP is always fun way to skew the numbers!0 -
I try to for everything, if I'm on. I have a small friends list on purpose, so I can do this.0
