Question about weighing...

I heard two different things.. that weighing yourself the same time, everyday is much better than weighing yourself once a week. you can see your progress as you go, if you gain, you know what you did wrong and fix it. and i heard weighing yourself once a week is better than weighing yourself everyday. WHICH IS BETTER MFP WORLD? all honest opinions accepted

I honestly think it's personal preference. I know some people who weigh themselves everyday, and the fluctuation doesn't bother them. I am one who isn't as concerned about the number, so I only weigh about once a month or so....I mainly go on how I feel and how my clothes are fitting.0

I'm not sure which is the "right" way, but I agree that it's your own personal preference. I weigh myself every single morning after I wake up (go potty) and I weigh myself completely naked. But, I have my "official weigh in day" once a week and whatever that weight is (mine is on Thursday's) that's what I input into MFP for my weight.
This is what I've always done & I like it. But, weighing daily CAN get discouraging because your weight can fluctuate quite a bit from day to day. Especially if your monthly friend is visiting, you can weigh a few pounds over but it will go away in those few days.
Hope this helps!

Weighing daily is ok if you understand that weight loss is never linear and fluctuations are perfectly normal. It could be a good way to understand your body's reactions to different situations and circumstances. IE, day after something high sodium, like sushi: temporary weight gain. Day after heavy workout: temporary weight gain. Shark week: temporary weight gain. None of those are something that needs to be fixed, just understood.
When I gave a damn about the scale, I weighed pretty much daily, but only recorded it once a week.0 -
Definitely personal preference. If you are the kind of person that can accept that there will be variances along the way and not get too discouraged, you will learn a lot about your weight and fluctuations with daily weigh-in's. I personally am a bit obsessed and through the years when losing weigh in about every time I walk past the scale. I have learned a lot about what does and does not stick for me and don't get too worried when I see a few lb swing at any given point as I know it is not real at times and is at others.
But, if you are going to get discouraged, don't do it! Then you want to set the scale visits further apart. Too, don't use only the scale as your barometer of progress. Add in measurements like those on MFP in the progress area. I add in a couple more that I track offline (MFP - be nice to add a few user choice measurement areas too). And, as the other poster said - how does your clothes fit?0 -
I weigh myself after every session at the gym, and only on their scale, since every scale seems to be a little different. I only update my weight on MFP after my Sundy morning workout so I can see the difference exactly one week from the last weigh-in.
The other days that I check my weight are just to make sure I am not heading drastically in the wrong direction. Most importantly, don't stress out over the scale. Check your measurements too. Sometimes you can gain a pound or two, or just stay the same for a few weeks while losing inches in all of the right places.0 -
I think it is a personal preference. Official weigh-in once a week, but I also tend to check weight a couple other times a week to check progress and see how things are going. Then work my butt off to get a good number on official weigh-in day. LOL0

SOOO true! Go ahead and eat a low caloric day but have too much sodium (with or without drinking lots of water) and see what happens for a day or two! Eat a big salad with a lo-cal dressing that happens to be high in sodium and you will definitely be standing on the scale asking WTF???!
And add in some heavy exercise you have not done in a while and get a similar result. Agree with all of this! But looking over the long haul and at more than just the scale gives you the real and full picture.0 -
thanks all
very helpful. i think ill weigh myself everyday to see my progress, but i will pick a day to actually record it on here

I like that idea of weighing every day but picking one day to be "MFP official" Thanks to whoever put that out there!0

edit: the concept, not the weight gain.0
