I have been on a get fit kick since last May, and its working. I've lost 30 pounds, and have been hitting the gym 5 days a week, before work. I just wanted to lose weight, so I've been on the treadmill, literally every day, for the past 7 months. This week, I finally decided I needed to get some other exercise in, and hit my gym's Fit Fix program. It's a program of 10 weight machines, and you do 8 to 10 reps on each, for 2 or 3 minutes each, working various parts of your body. Large muscle groups first, and then arms, back, etc.

I thought I was in shape from all that cardio. Today, my legs are killing me and I feel like an old man. I know I have to keep at it, and I'm actually looking forward to hitting it again later this week.

So, stuck on the treadmill like me? Break free, try some new exercise, and really feel the burn! I'm looking forward to a whole new level of fitness!

Your legs are killing you because you changed your exercise that is all. The same thing would have happened if you had swapped to swimming or cycling.

However, glad you are enjoying the change.

you also should never have a routine-your body adapts- always change things up whether its cardio or weights.

Good for you! I'm a strong advocate for adding variety to your workouts! Keep the body guessing :) Also, strength training is a must

    Muscle memory baby!!

Even on the machines (and free weights) your muscles will adapt and remember. That is why you have to shake up your routine. I am like you, fell slave to the treadmills and then broke free. I love lifting. It feels like I am actually doing something. Yeah, I break a sweat on the machines, but I love when my muscles scream at me - HEY I AM ALIVE!!

Exactly! I'm actually happy I'm sore today as it does feel like I've done some work. I really am excited about breaking out of the rut and mixing it up!

All that cardio has helped you get in shape... the best kind of shape - Cardio!

Strength training will help you get into a better type of shape.

^^^ She is right though. Once your body gets used to a routine, that's when the plateaus begin.

We're not trying to knock your efforts in any way... but if you had switched up your routine more often you could've lost that 30lbs in half the time.

Keep up the good work though. It's a learning process...
  • cardio is great for the heart and lungs, but your other muscles need a work out too. that's why circuit training is awesome! You do a little of each over and over and you give yourself time to catch a breath and work on another part! "Pain is fear leaving the body"... Jillian says that in her dvd. :)

Hell, my legs get a damn good workout during running, that's all I can say as well as my arms when I am pumping them like crazy to keep going :D

Running, Swimming, Cycling all are brilliant and these are just three cardio exercises - no wonder Triathletes have superb physiques!
