The title about sums it up. Is it what you eat, or what you have left? I'm so hopelessly confused. And what is the business about eating back your calories you burned? Is that bad? Is that good?

Your deficit is how many calories below maintenance you are eating. Eating at a deficit means eating less than maintenance. The goal that MFP gives you has a certain deficit calculated into it. Eat that, even with no exercise, and you will lose weight.
Search the forums for threads on eating exercise calories (there are several a day). Short answer -- if you want them, eat them. They will not slow down your weight loss because as I said you are already eating at a deficit.0
