Weird metabolism/weight loss?

Hi everyone,

I have been off and on trying to lose weight for a couple of years with some success, however there has always been something weird about the way I lose weight. The only way I can really describe it is that it seems like my metabolism is super sensitive. I gain and lose 1-3 pounds in a matter of one day, and it does seem to be connected to how I eat. If I eat just slightly (a few hundred calories) too much, I will gain back somewhere between 1 and three pounds which don't go away until I eat a few hundred calories under. That doesn't seem normal. I thought gaining a pound was supposed to be something like
3500 extra calories? And on the other side sometimes I can lose weight really quickly by just eating slightly under. Not starving myself by any means, but skipping out on a couple of hundred calories... Is there something that I'm missing or could something be wrong with me? It might partially be that I don't exercise at all ever because I hate it, so maybe that just makes my metabolism so slow that minor changes are magnified?

Thanks for any insights

Your body weight naturally fluctuates between 1-5lbs a day. So that difference you are noticing is likely either normal bodily fluctuations.. or the literal amount of weight from the food and water in your system.
When I wake up in the morning I typically weigh 127.. but later in the day I'll be 129.5.

Everyone's body does that. Most of it is water fluctuations. Ignore it and watch the long term trends.

Get a scale that measures body fat, that is what I really want to lose.

And don't weigh in every day, weigh in once a week, at the same time, with the same clothes, etc.

I was driving myself nuts staring at the scale every morning.

That happens to everyone. Plus you need to see how late you are eating, if you eat a few extra calories right before you go to bed your body is basically storing it, so you are usually heavier the next day. Just try to weigh yourself once a week after a good day of eating. I try no to eat past 8 at the latest.

You are so right. That "past 8" eating is killer. I know that I should have just gone to bed when the munchies hit me at 10:30! I had put on five pounds JUST by those extra 200 to 300 calories of late night snacking over the last 2 months.

You know, your body doesn't stop metabolizing just because it's bed time.
