What have I done to my knee????

My knee has been a bit bothersome the past week or so...just a little pain here and there. Slow jog this morning, about a half mile in, and I felt a sharp pain in the front of my knee and it buckled. Made it home by walking slowly with it completely straight...can't put any weight with a bend in the knee. Leg feels like a noodle with no left to right stability. Has anyone else done this?

  • I would suggest resting it and seeing a doctor immediately, especially if you continue to have no stability in it.

Any time you feel strange pains in your legs or knees it is a sign to rest!

If it "buckled" then it could be serious. Get it checked before resuming any exercise to be sure.

I'd highly advise you to meet with your doctor, or get a referral to a doctor specializing in sports medicine. The opinion of a trained medical professional will always trump advice from an internet message board.

But, based on my own experience, I had a similar situation happend to me about 4 years ago. My knee simply locked up on me a couple of days after my workout and after meeting with my doctor, I was told I was dealing with a severe case of tendonitis. At the time I was putting my knees under a lot ot stress, particuarly with my leg workouts. I was doing extremely high-volume workouts that utilized a lot of sets, and at the time my form on my squats was not as strong as it could have been.

So, based on the advice of my doctor, I scaled back my leg workouts, eliminated exercises that put my knees under the the most stress and re-evaulted my form on everything, especially the squat. I still get some pain and discomfort from time to time, but it never really lasts like it used to.

I had a similiar situation, I strained my knee at work. I have a leg immobilizer for when I am resting and ice helps too. take it easy for a couple days. if you have hand weights works with those to still get a good sweat in. i hope this helps. Good luck!!!

I experienced the same thing very recently. I have an IT Band injury on my left knee. I am currently in physical therapy for it. The therapist has taught me a bunch of stretches that have helped with the pain. I was told no running until further notice. I am also icing my kneed 3-4x a day along with lots of rest. You should go to the doctor right away. That is not good! ;( I hope you feel better!

It could be muscle imbalance - you didn't say in your post but are you recently doing more activity? Giving way isn't always a sign of something bad - pain can cause giving way just as much as anything sinister. Agree with the icing and resting but IMO would recommend physio rather than GP as they are the musculoskeletal experts and will refer you on if they think they can't fix you. I'd give it a week or so to see if it settles first anyway.

As someone who has already undergone TWO knee surgeries within the last 16 years, please see a physician. As suggested, someone specializing in Sports Medicine OR a knee specialist is the best. I'm fortunate that my ortho is a former Olympic dr. He has given me many exercises to do to strengthen the muscles surrounding my knee so we can try to avoid a 3rd sugery. Hoping you feel better soon!

Thanks for the input...rest and elevation is helping a bit, but still can't walk with any bend. Will try to get into ortho.
