I have to eat gluten free because of celiac disease and I agree that cutting out gluten will not help you lose weight (unless you simultaneously create a calorie deficit). In fact, many gluten free breads, granola bars, etc are more caloric that their wheat counterparts because additional fat or sugar is added to make them…

I am so into clementines (Mandarin oranges) right now. I could eat half of a 5 pound bag in a day. It's a struggle to limit myself to a reasonable serving. There's not really any food that I hate come to think of it...I don't like mint in desserts but that's about it.

The thread is called "Depression and Weight Loss." Use the search function. It's worth a look! There are a lot of people in the same boat as you when it comes to depression. I hope you find tools that work for you whether it's medication, therapy, exercise, or something else. :)

I'm 5'7". My start weight was 150. I am 135 right now and pretty happy with my weight. I will try to lose a little more and see how I feel at 130 but I am not in a rush. I lost all the weight without exercising but now I am focusing on fitness goals rather than just the scale.

My food scale died last night so clearly the universe is trying to send me a message about the futility of logging today. Can't argue with the universe.

Drinking more water won't make you lose more weight. Drink water when you feel thirsty. Drinking more than that is just personal preference.

Birth control may increase appetite for some women but there is no reason it should prevent you from losing weight if you are actually in a caloric deficit. According to the CDC 28% of American women take oral contraceptives. I say that to emphasize the fact that it is likely that many of the women who have had success in…

If you keep getting unwanted attention you should report it to the MFP moderators.
-
That is not typical as far as I know. The chit-chat forum does have a sort of 'flirty' reputation but the rest of MFP does not have that vibe at all. Sorry you've had to deal with that. Hopefully it is an isolated incident.
-
My heart goes out to you. You are handling terrible news with strength. The weight gain doesn't necessarily mean that you are not coping. It just means you are human. :) You are in the right place if you want to lose weight. MFP has a lot of great resources! I would just begin by tracking your intake for a while before you…

I do think that sleep requirements differ from person to person. However I also think you may be a bit of an anomaly. Most people can't get only 3 hours of solid sleep a night and function well during the day. When I am suffering from insomnia the next day I generally feel awful. I wouldn't be surprised if I ate more those…

One can be in a normal weight range (according to bmi) and still want to lose weight. BMI is useful but the 'normal' range is quite broad.

Very good article. OP, I wish you luck in your journey to feel better. I understand how hard it is to deal with chronic digestive issues (IBS, celiac). But maybe take the results you get with a grain of salt.

Almost everyone in my family has clinical depression. So it's no wonder that I have it too. I've been on medication most of my life in conjunction with therapy and other forms of self care like fitness. I agree that we need to stop stigmatizing medication as a crutch. Depression is an illness and medication can help some…

Very well said. I completely agree that this should be a teachable moment for you, OP. I think the Internet can trick us into thinking that our opinion is always in demand.

I do understand your frustration. I encourage you to continue working with your doctors to find a diagnosis but I can also tell you from experience that severe ibs alone can cause all those symptoms. I can absolutely relate to your bloating issues. It's a nearly daily problem for me as well no matter what I eat. I also…

I have low blood pressure that only affects me negatively if I get up from a sitting or laying position too quickly (orthostatic hypotension). I have blacked out a few times and actually gashed my chin on a counter. But I've learned to prevent that by just getting up slowly or sitting on the floor if I get a head rush. I…

No. Bad idea. You would be dangerously low on fat, protein, and other nutrients. Eat what you want to eat but fit it into your calorie deficit.
-
No one is calling you "crazy." I've dealt with anxiety and depression my whole life and that doesn't make me crazy. I'm sorry you feel attacked but you are clearly demonstrating disordered behavior regarding food. Mental health is just as critical as physical health and that's all the other posters are saying. If you…

I think it has more to do with genetics than weight in my case but if you've lost a lot there probably is a difference. I am always cold whether I am a few pounds heavier or lighter . I work in a laboratory that is kept frigid. I wear a cardigan indoors (even though it is sweltering outside) and I actually just bought a…

This sounds so much like my ex. Of course you have to be the one who decides to stay or go but the way you describe him sets off a lot of warning bells in my mind. Maybe your issue is not just about him disrespecting your lifestyle change but about him disrespecting you in general. That said, communication is key. Stand up…

I like Yummly (app and website). You select what foods you like to eat and the prep time and it suggests other dishes you might like. There are lots of healthy recipes on there.
-
I'm sorry but I've never met a girl who's gotten back together with an ex simply because he's lost weight. If you want to lose weight for your own sake that's great but being thinner doesn't fix relationships. edit: I want to make it clear that in no way is it safe (or even possible) to lose that much weight that fast.

Go to Nutrition--> Calories-->Weekly View You will be able to see the total number of calories over or under your goal (I use iPhone app)

Haha thanks. His treat face and shame face are pretty much the same. He gets a lot of mileage out of that one look.

I know...it's a daily battle with my dog. I've explained CICO to him so many times but apparently he just doesn't want to take care of his body. And he doesn't even lift. It makes me doubt if he actually takes his weight loss goals seriously.
-
This is Mickey. He's embarrassed. He almost exclusively eats food that comes out of bags (and never uses a scale).

Greasy food is really hard on most people's digestive tracts. IBS can be mild or severe but whether you had it or not I'm glad your symptoms cleared up. I have eaten pretty "clean" for years (whole grains, lots of vegetables, fruits, healthy fats, lean proteins) and my IBS is still definitely something I have to deal with.
-
Hi I also have pretty severe IBS and there is some solid research backing Low FODMAP diets for IBS (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3966170/) but it seems super restrictive for me. So many vegetables and fruits are off limits. I already have celiac and can't eat gluten so cutting out anything else would be hard…
