  • Sad news here. I got to know a lot of the nursing home residents while working at the hospital. They locked down early and hard, keeping the virus out for months. Then a young worker went to a July 4th party where stupid was happening, including sharing vape pens. Now there are active cases in other workers and the…
  • No scientific knowledge, but I'd guess the biggest danger would be picking up fomites from surfaces and rubbing them into eyes.
  • I recently saw an interview with a CEO who was happy to have his employees WFH for as long as they want because they had seen no loss of productivity. This was even though the company had just finished buying and setting up new London offices that have sat empty so far.
  • I'm in isolation for myself and my parents who I care for. Thanks to curbside pickup, last week was the first time I had to go inside a public building - dealership for car maintenance. During that five hours, I was the only one wearing a mask; I also wiped down the chair I used and my car before getting back in. The mask…
  • Do you know how long results are taking? Here it's two to over seven days depending on if the tests are sent out of state.
  • I just learned that we still can't be tested here in South Dakota without symptoms. My hair stylist (a friend even though I'm isolating and not getting hair cuts) tried to get a test after her son got sick and was confirmed positive. Even though she's in a close-contact service job, no test.
  • Why not change the mask so it can't be sucked in? Some sort of stiffening material sewn on or get the ones that look more like a duck's bill.
  • It's been hard on my parents to not visit their great-grandchildren, but I tell them often how proud I am that they are taking it seriously. They also know I would insist on 2 weeks isolation if they did and being able to socialize with me has made this much easier on all of us.
  • This is exactly the right reason to leave the mask on until you finish all the errands.
  • Reading the Great Mask Wars elsewhere, it occurs to me that this is comparable to going off-grid. The easiest way is not to buy enough solar panels to supply your normal electric use, but to cut back that usage as much as possible and pick up the rest with panels. In the same way, the easiest way to avoid infection isn't…
  • Do any of the stores around you offer curbside pickup? I never used it before, but now it's the only way I get groceries (other than pantry items shipped). I'm very cautious and still disinfect everything before bringing it inside, but haven't had any problems this way.
  • Another issue is finding new movies to show. Most of Hollywood's releases were delayed until the fall at least.
  • My understanding of the CDC statement isn't that surfaces are less of an issue, it's that air transmission is much worse than they thought. In other words, continue to wash your hands but also add distance and masks. Here, even though we're at the highest number of positive cases yet in the county, the hospital is letting…
  • First comment below the article also interesting: "Bull crap, I questioned their sign and not once did any kind of conversation saying otherwise, claimed it was a joke, back peddle much. Oh now they are the victim, please you got called out on your bull"
  • From what I understand, the virus sheds in urine and fecal matter which the flushing process very efficiently puts into the air and spreads to all surfaces. Unless they come up with a lid that goes down automatically when flushing, there probably isn't a way to keep a public toilet clean.
  • Looking for positives: a movie theater owner is renovating the old drive-in that closed 7 years ago. I hope the town supports him and uses it a lot this summer.
  • FYI: If the mac n'cheese has been sitting out there for 6 years there's a good chance the cheese powder has gone off. If the color is more brown than orange it won't taste good. Noodles should be fine to use though.
  • I saw a news piece from Australia where someone tried to return 150 large (over 30 rolls each) packages of TP to the store because they couldn't sell it for huge profits like they expected.
  • Our governor has refused to issue SIP for the one city (two counties) that has become a hot-spot. Instead the city council is going to do so with a new ordinance but that will take another week to be legal. My son works in a hospital there. I have to actively not think about it so I don't melt into a puddle of worry. He is…
  • A local meat-packing plant has 80 positive employees. Even with high unemployment will they be able to keep up production? We are supposed to be weeks away from peaking.
  • Re the socializing needs: my parents live on a farm a few miles away and I live alone. We have all been strictly quarantining ourselves for several weeks and now feel safe to spend time together. I'm normally fine being alone, but it felt very good to be able to hug them again. Growing up rural in a northern state, we…
  • I'm heading in to cover the graveyard shift in the ER for an ill coworker. I haven't seen my parents in weeks because I won't be the one to expose them. Honestly, they are being very good about isolating already. I hate the way things are right now, but if everybody was as careful as the OP, I would worry less. Thank you.
  • My husband had a friend who tried this. He stopped when uncontrollable diarrhea started running down his legs while at work.
  • Thank you for the suggestion to read 'The Gift of Fear'. I'm only on chapter 6, but it is indeed enlightening. It prompted a conversation with a co-worker who is going to have her college-age daughter read it. The statistic that three out of four women are victims of violence is true in my immediate family.
  • I drove back and talked to the owner from the safety of my car. Yes on rabies shots. Made sure it would be restrained in the morning from now on. No bleeding, just a big bruise and scrape. Could have been much worse.
  • Since A1C is a required test for both T1 and T2, I suspect the OP is recently diagnosed.

  • I thought the latest findings were that salt is only a problem for those who are hypertensive.
  • I wonder, since sales tax isn't applied to ebt/food stamp purchases, would they start down the slippery slope of restricting which drinks can be bought that way?
  • I don't know if your living space allows this, but kale is crazy easy to grow; even in a pot.
  • That doesn't automatically follow. A person can be in the process of losing weight and still appreciate being able to sit comfortably. She could also know others who can use the app. It doesn't have to be an all or nothing, obese or slender, situation.
