I live in Bortle class 4-5 skies (which is not bad seeing for an urban area), but can drive 45 minutes in nearly any direction and get class 2 skies. It gets dark real fast outside of town. And about 3 hours north of me is a designated dark sky site, Massacre Rim (northern nevada). This photo was taken there.

You took a beautiful picture. I've visited all of the great lakes, but not Lake Michigan since I was 14 or 15 years old. That was when visiting relatives in Wisconsin. I recall mosquitos like helicopters and freezing cold water on their farm.
