  • I have been assured by cancer doctors numerous times that diet coke (artificial sweetners) does not cause cancer. In terms of good or bad, limiting how much diet coke I consume makes it easier to stay within my calorie goal. I am not sure why but believe it is related to the artificial sweetners and caffeine. I have no…
  • Not really history. Food companies continue to sponsor research. http://archinte.jamanetwork.com/mobile/article.aspx?articleid=2548251 This article notes that in 2015 the New York Times obtained emails that Coca Cola has relationships with researchers conducting studies aimed at minimizing effects of sugary drinks on…
  • If CICO is taught and hammered into kids heads all through school then maybe the waist trainer and the like industry will eventually die. If there was some kind of national campaign about CICO is king that could help get rid of the schemes. Maybe even market it as the "secret" to weight issues is CICO to appeal to people.…
  • Yes!! We learned about the how many servings of the basic food groups we should be eating every day. But as far as I remember nothing about how many calories foods contain. Given that your weight is all about CICO, calories in food should be highlighted. However kids really have no control as to the foods they are served.…
  • Unless you know how many calories a person burns you can't reliably know how many calories they should be eating. I moan about how little 1200 calories is all the time, but I can't deny that my body doesn't lose weight if I eat more. Better to accept it than continue on the overweight train. Glad my diary is private.

  • Awesome! Good for you for taking control. 3.2 pounds is just the beginning. Thanks for the update. Feel inspired by it.
  • I don't call it cheating but there are meals that I eat over my calorie allowance. Usually planned but sometimes not. I can't do that all day though because it wipes out my deficit. I like to save calories the day before and day after. It's hard though because that usually means I am hungry. I am picky too. I am not going…
  • In my opinion it is self torture having food around that makes you feel crazy trying not to eat it. Why do that to yourself because you think you should be able to practice moderation? Sure, I think I should be able to practice it without white knuckles but I can't. That doesn't mean I am a failure as a human being. It…
  • While getting your eating under control there is nothing wrong with forbidding and eliminating foods that you will overeat. Moderation doesn't work for everyone. I used to beat myself up because I wouldn't or couldn't practice moderation. Embracing that I do not have to practice moderation has freed me. Eliminating foods…
  • If we had one nearby I would shop there in the winter as their produce section is superior to my regular grocery store. I would probably buy meat there too as it tastes better. Trader Joes is too far too. Sigh. Sometimes I dislike living in the middle of nowhere.
  • I think there is something to artifical sweeteners and overeating. However, quitting diet coke isn't going to magically make it so you don't have cravings and drop weight without effort. I do feel better now that I don't drink 5 to 6 cans of diet coke a day. I just have one in the morning. I think I feel better because of…
  • When diagnosed with a life threatening illness it is very common to blame yourself and something you did to cause it. You can have some very irrational thoughts. Of course my eating habits were part of that. My doctors said over and over that "sugar" had nothing to do with it. I agree that some docs may say it so the…

  • I took the test on www.brooks.com and bought the Brooks shoe that was recommended. I despise any athletic shoe because I think they make my feet look ugly. I only wore Keds (least offensive to me) until I started walking a lot. It nearly killed me to spend $125 on shoes I find unflattering. However, I am now on my 2nd pair…
  • Yes that was where I was coming from with the thread but I appreciate all the discussion around both the verb and noun definition. It is interesting how people react differently.
  • Here it is. It is a good post.
  • Reminds me of the movie Pretty Woman. Julia Roberts made Richard Gere take his shoes off to feel the grass. At the end of the movie he took a walk in barefeet when he was deciding to be with her forever.
  • Sauces and mashed potatoes are not unhealthy uless they push you out of your deficit. Even when eating within my maintenence goal, sauces and mashed potatoes could push me over. That's fine unless I was over the day before or going to be over the next day. Sauces and mashed potatoes will always need to be planned for…
  • Education about nutrition and CICO would help the situation. That will cost money. A tax on junk food could cover that. I am not 100% sure that a tax is the answer. I am not picketing the White House or putting a petition up on change.org for a junk food tax. I am discussing the idea on a forum. I have not said anything…
  • That's where I am coming from. Are there policymakers creeping the MFP forums for their next platform?
  • @lemurcat12 too long to quote you on my phone... I don't know if the answer is a junk food tax. It's a discussion on the forum. It's an idea. I missed your follow up questions and do not feel obligated to go back. Everyone does not have an obesity problem. That doesn't mean society as a whole can't help the ones that do.…
  • Sugar has been disproven to be linked cancer. Obesity can be a contributing factor however it's your genes that have the greatest impact. There are tests/scans that can show a false positive if you have eaten sugar before the test. I am overweight because I eat too many calories that have lots of added sugar. I either cut…

  • I wasn't ignoring you, I missed your post. I am confident that most people know what junk food is. It's only some MFP members who fight about it. In real life everyone knows what junk food is. So when MFP members say it's impossible to define, I know that's ridiculous. My comment wasn't specifically about the tax. I am sad…
  • Right. There's no balance now. Of course we should give kids treats. However, it doesn't seem like there are treats anymore because they get the treat foods all the time. Now the kids are conditioned to it. Become overweight and turn into obese adults.
  • I believe all the extra snacking opportunities that have been created is a big why for so many adults/kids are overweight and obese. As far as I can tell these extra snacking opportunities started in the 80's and has continued to the ridiculous amount of it now. No one snacked in earlier generations like they do now The…
  • I am not sure how it works. It has something to do with state and town zoning laws. Our water comes from the same source as people who are on the town water system. When the state enacts water bans (no watering lawns and stuff like that) we have to comply also. I know that our house could not get an occupancy permit…
  • Our property has a well. I say we own water after our pump draws it into the 50 gallons main tank plus the 80 gallons hot water tank. The stored water is replenished as we use it. I don't think we own the water that our well draws from.
  • Not to mention that young people wake up feeling fine and go to bed with cancer. Happens all the time. They have car wrecks, fall down in the shower and get randomly shot too.
