I buy two brands of frozen dinners: Amy's and Kashi. The sodium may still be high, but at least I know that I'm eating real food that isn't loaded with chemicals. I was considering trying Cedarlane, but their "2 servings per entree" pissed me off. But even then, it's only an occasional thing...usually when it's exam time…

Easy children. Billy's dad has just as good of a job as Tommy's. AshBear, Got it, thanks! I realize now that I combine proteins naturally, just in planning my meals. Yay! Ghanie, Shhhh...Byrd might kill me! Haha, I'm not a bodybuilder, but I do strength train 3-4 days a week, and do cardio 5-6 days a week. So I do think…

So, a friend invited me to run with her in Golden Gate Park in a few days. Besides a few little runs, I've never run outside. I've sure as hell never run far outside. In the gym, I do HIIT on the treadmill, mixed in with some regular treadmill jogging, so it's not like I never run. Any tips for running outside? Stuff to…

The ONLY believably scientific thing I have ever heard about eating carby stuff late at night comes from Jillian Michaels. She says that the insulin spike can disrupt the release of the hormones that help you lose weight. Eating fruit with a bit of protein would pretty much negate it, and even without, Jillian admitted…

Oh, I have nothing against meat. The corn industry and its relationship with the meat packing industry, oh hells yes, but that's what grass-fed beef is for. And I live in San Francisco, so I have lots of access to organic and local food. I'm just curious to try it out for a week. Ok, so is the combining proteins thing a…

For one week, I'm a vegan...a very protein-craving vegan. Call it curiosity if you like. Anyway, I'm following my quest on my blog. http://damnthefreshman15.blogspot.com/ All comments/advice very much welcomed!

I made sure to check the cooked. I even cross-checked it with a standard Chipotle serving of beans. Weird!

Today I got black beans from my school cafeteria. I measured out half a cup (back in my room). Just for giggles, I weighed it. Then, I checked Calorie King and entered the gram weight...it was way fewer calories than what the half cup was supposed to be. Foods are calculated by weight first, right? My beans were just extra…

Gotcha! Thanks so much!

I try to get 1 gram of protein per pound of my goal weight (which I'm pretty close to), making it 125. I've heard of seitan! What's it like? I have a pack of lentils. I also can get black beans, pinto beans, and chickpeas from my school's cafeteria. I actually just bought some hemp milk today. It had more protein than…

I'm always curious about alternative ways of doing things. A lot of my acquaintences are vegan/vegetarian. So, for one week, I want to go vegan. But I also strength train, so I eat a lot of protein. I have rice protein powder to supplement, but I like to get most of my nutrients from whole food. I know some might say to…

Yeah! Boys need their food! Think of it this way: he's listening to his body. As long as it's clear he's eating because he's a ravenous teenager, and not because he's bored, then everything should be fine. Ensuring that he likes healthy foods is the best thing to do. -sigh- I wish my parents had gotten me into sports at a…

I looked at it. The nutritional profile is pretty sucky for a protein powder. Too high in carbs, and not enough protein for the number of calories. It does have quite a bit of fiber, but I don't like non-whole food fiber. Really, for a good powder, Gold Standard Whey is great. The best tasting is Spiru-tein, but it's…

Though I think you were asking PinkShoes, I personally have nothing against cows' milk. However, I want to go vegan for a week (curiosity more than anything). I'm kind of anti-soy though--it's in so many foods as it is that I suspect we get too much of it. And so much of it is processed. Everyone tells me to get almond…

Anyone tried it? It has a lot more protein that most alternative milks, and omega 3's. I want to buy some, but I'd like to know if it's any good.

I made it through Spring Break...but I've noticed a few potentially bad habits starting to take nest. This week, I'm nipping them in the bud! There's a link to my plan below. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! http://damnthefreshman15.blogspot.com/2009/03/operation-decrapify.html

At my gym, we have a "Fit Bag" class. It's essentially kickboxing--but none of this wussy shadow stuff. You wail on a bag for an hour, learning combos, kicks, jabs, all interspersed with some bootcamp work, like crunches and planks. It's an asskicker. But sooooo fun. I feel like I'm making my body more useful--it's awesome.

Wow...so I just realized why I thought my thighs looked so strange. THEY ARE LOSING FAT! Finally! I was thinking "Damn, my thighs look sooooo weird....it's like they are becoming wobbly planks of wood...OMFG!" They aren't quiiite beach ready sexy gams...but for the first time in my life, they aren't cylinders!

It makes me sick. I NEVER leap on these "Think of the CHILDREN!" wagons. But this one I do. Garbage in, garbage out. And with it we lose the very art of eating, relying on sodium-packed instant sauces and chicken fingers.

I notice tons of changes. - A year ago, I always went for the biggest piece. (Say, cookies) Now, I try to snag the smallest. - A year ago, I would have drowned my sorrows in a a venti white chocolate mocha. Now, I read a book. At the most I'll make myself a cup of 25-calorie cocoa. - A year ago, a bunch of friends going to…

Ugh... I'm having a real rough day. See, Friday's a strength training day and Saturday's always morning spin. But Friday was insaaane and I couldn't get to the gym. No problem, I thought. I'll do it Saturday. But see...my dad's coming to visit for my Spring Break. I want to enjoy myself at the good restaurants we're going…

I like to eat a lot of little things more so than two or three bigger ones, so my typical days are a bit odd. And I have 5 small meals more so than 2 snacks and 3 meals. Here was yesterday. It contains more processed food than usual though. Breakfast: Small omelet (1/2 c EggBeaters, 1/2 c frozen spinach, sprinkling of…

Heya girlies! Yeah, my whole family is overweight. My mom's tried every fad diet out there, and refuses to believe me when I say the only true way is exercise and healthy eating. She called me the other day asking about açai berries. I replied "Mommy dearest, if açai berries really made you lose weight, everyone would be…

WHOA girl! You should NEVER feel like you have to lose weight on the sly. What's he going to do when you do lose the weight? I'm sorry if I sound forward, but you shouldn't feel like you have to sneak in your journal entries. As for weekends...sorry cupcake, it comes down to belief. I have crazy weekends too and never go…

So, my dad's visiting me in San Francisco, for 4 days. He has three big food requests: - A nice Indian restaurant - A nice Asian restaurant - A nice Italian restaurant What are some lighter but healthy suggestions for these types of places? I want to enjoy myself, since they will be more expensive than I usually eat. But I…

Compromise! If you like to eat at night (like me!), just eat healthy stuff! You would be surprised how yummy some steamed asparagus or broccoli can be, with a little spice or lemon juice. Or what about a little Greek yogurt? I'm a student and often up late. I know the Best Life guy and Tom Venuto endlessly go "NO EATING…

Hello lovelies! I'm feeling great about myself--I'd been running on the treadmill, but I was more or less "getting used to it." Today, I decided to try HIIT! I'd never done it on a treadmill before, only in spin class. I followed a beginner's workout from a good website. I could have stopped. But then I said to myself,…

Hey guys! So, I've been trying to shake up my cardio. I've started incorporating the treadmill, after months of sticking mainly to elliptical and spin class. The only official HIIT I've done is instructor-lead spin class. I've been largely just getting used to the treadmill, because I've never run in my life as a form of…

Oh I know! My mom and I had a huge row when it was my stepdad's birthday. I said I'd have a small piece of cake and she gave me this HUGE wedge of chocolate death--with icing. A year ago I would've attacked it like a starving pothead. I ate about a third before the rich chocolate started to taste revolting. I refused to…
