  • Eww, no! That girl made me shake my head. The feed is here:…
  • As some of you know, I love Jillian Michaels. She has a Sunday radio show where she takes callers with health questions. Saturday night/early Sunday morning, I was totally blazed at a diner with friends. I guess a few last fumes of MJ were still swirling in my mind, because when I woke up Sunday morning, I thought "OMG,…
  • You'd be really surprised to know that it's quite easy for people to have problems MEETING 1200 calories. Load up on veggies! Put together a bigass salad with spinach, mushrooms, a little tomato, cucumber, sweet peppers, a little bit of carrot. Drizzle with vinegar. Pair with a bit of chicken breast or fish.
  • Best kept secret ever! I use it ALL the time in fajitas and burritos. And in soups! And guess what? It's PACKED with protein and calcium, so it's WAY better for you than that punk-*kitten* fat free sour cream.
  • Honey, if you survived Thailand, with those 45 gazillion fried chicken stands, America won't be a problem. Except for heavily processed food. But really, that junk isn't worth it, especially when there's a feast of fresh yummies around the grocery store perimeter!
  • And another thing about turkey--sometimes they pack it full of sodium to give it more flavor. Screw you, Jenni-O!
  • So, I had an adventure the night before last. It made me think about the nature of self control. I hear so many people say that they "lose all control" and go bananas on the banana bread. But my thoughts on self control have changed. I wrote about it here:…
  • I'm a protein maniac! My ratio is about 50-30-20 too, though sometimes I'll switch it up for a day or two, just to give my body a wake-up call.
  • Really? I'll believe the others, but this one goes against the precepts of virtually all natural body-builders--and those guys know how to burn fat.
  • I got soo addicted to my scale at home. Back in college, I eye every sliver of meat with suspicion. But I just ordered a scale from Amazon, as a reward for doing well on this big ethnography project. So excited! I use my palm too...but the dimensions always bother me.
  • Definitely great advice--particularly the part about not rewarding oneself with food. I used to do that, and all my attempts to lose weight failed. However, I'll sometimes reward myself with food-related things, such as a bag of high-quality coffee, or some really nice tea. But these rewards often have nothing to do with…
  • As a college student, I LOVE my microwave. Since a lot of us are busy, I thought it would be neat if I did a piece on cooking with a microwave. It's a followup to an earlier piece I did. Check it out on Carrots 'N' Cake! http://carrotsncake.com/2009/02/guest-post-the-mellifluous-microwave-part-ii.html
  • I'm too broke for an HRM, so I need the machines to give me an approximation of calories burned. But they are notoriously unreliable, usually not in our favor. So, I weigh 142 pounds. If I put in 132 pounds for the weight, will the reading be closer to accurate?
  • If you want a steak, by all means have one. Just three things: - Choose a lean cut, such as a sirloin or filet mignon. Stay away from rib eye! - Check the size. 6 oz? 12? Find out so you can partition your steak--a 12 oz steak is waaaay too much. 4-5 oz is plenty. You can take the rest home. - Check to see what it's cooked…
  • I think you mean 11 pieces. A roll is the entire tray. I'm sorry, I don't know how much would be in that. Eel is high in fat, but it's good for you. Actually, I wouldn't really worry about it. Brown rice has fiber and whole grain value, cucumber is good for you, and a bit of fatty fish does your body good. If you're…
  • Pshaw, as the 30-Day Oatmeal challenged proved, there is no way to get bored with oatmeal. http://livewell360.com/2008/11/30-day-oatmeal-challenge/ I adjust the recipes a little bit sometimes to lower the calories, but hot damn, they are SO GOOD. I've grown addicted to cottage cheese, probably because my school caf. has it…
  • Aw, nah! All it takes to enjoy a good meal out is a little bit of planning. I've eaten at some amazing, high-end restaurants and still stayed within my calories. Just think, if you were leading an army, would you charge in with no plan? Think of eating out as a battle against the food industry, its massive portions, and…
  • Don't worry! Sushi is totally fine on a diet--just don't go crazy. Just think about all those skinny Asians who eat sushi all the time and never gain an ounce. But the sushi that Asians typically eat is not the sushi that Joe the Plumber eats when his wife wants to feel adventurous and sophisticated. Here are some tips for…
  • Yes, definitely! I have a few questions. When you're a wee bit more awake, can you answer this for me: - Do you evenly divide your calories, or front-load and taper? - Do you eat your once a week cheat meal that he recommends? Oh, forgot to mention my lunch! LUNCH: - 1 c yellow squash and zucchini (33) - .3 c brown and…
  • Ah! I'll have to talk with her about it. It's weird eating 5 meals a day instead of 3 meals + 2 snacks. I feel like I'm eating soo much, even when I'm not! DEJEUNER: - 4 oz roasted turkey breast (120) - 1/2 fuji apple (55) - 1.5 c steamed broccoli (45) Total: 220
  • I've been eating "healthier" for a long while, but I recently read Tom Venuto's "Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle," and he makes such good arguments. So I'm stepping things up a notch and slowly phasing most processed stuff out of my diet. Is cottage cheese considered a clean food? 'Cuz I don't care how unclean it is, it…
  • I'd still eat them with fruit though, for the fiber. Fiber, kiddos. I didn't get enough of it for a few days and oh lord my body had no problems showing my how painful certain transactions can be without it! But these Cheerios sound YUMMY!
  • Ehh...over Christmas Break (about a month) I was eating pretty badly under (consuming around 1000-1100 a day). Not on purpose! I was either run-everywhere-busy or bored and housebound, and stopped being conscious of it. However, I've been eating in the range of 1200 since uh...September? That's when I started actively…
  • Hey potpies! So, my back's been getting stiff on me. I am a student and have to study a lot. I do take breaks, but not quite as much as I should, and I admit that my posture isn't great. I'm really interested in replacing my desk chair with an exercise ball--to encourage me to fix my posture and to take more breaks, and…
  • Sliced frozen banana sprinkled with cinnamon, cocoa powder, and a drizzle of sugar-free hazelnut syrup.
  • I keep sticking my toe in the water, then get scared and hop away. I get really worried that the food I eat in the cafeteria contains way more calories than I think it does. I set myself at 1350, but I have problems eat that much. I'm 5'4" and weigh around 140. I do 45-minute spin classes 3-4 times a week, and do a mix of…
  • I'd say, start using low-sugar and low-salt alternatives, to naturally curb his cravings. Cook with veggies and whole grains. He should come around. I notice how my parents feed my sister and it makes me sick. This summed up everything: We were having a dinner of roast beef, corn, baked potato, and green beans. I had…
  • Sorry Mausie, I didn't mean to offend. It was a joke--America is famous for how paranoid it got during the Cold War--you know, that "the bomb" would come crashing down at any moment. I'm super paranoid about what I'm eating, so the joke was that if I lived in the Cold War, I probably would have lost it and bombed St.…
  • Oh sweetie, I'm sorry you feel so sad. When I feel bad and those scuttling little thoughts turn to the donut table in my cafeteria, this is what saves me every time: If I marched over there, gobbled it down, savored each gush of jelly and squish of freshly-fried dough...would it really make me feel better? Won't I just…
  • Lord, I'm so happy I didn't grow up in the Cold War era. I would have probably bombed St. Petersberg. Anyway, back in The Real World with my (pretty healthy) school cafeteria, I STILL seem to be coming up a bit short on calories. Soo...does it seem like I've portioned them out right, and that it's a realistic amount? Do I…
