  • I'm a similar size (size 8, 5'10, with "jiggly bits" I don't love). This year, I've discovered two sources of motivation: I signed up for a 10k, and I know we are heading to the beach this summer. I don't want to embarrass myself at the race and I want to be comfortable in a swimsuit. (I may or may not silently chant…
  • I've heard ellipticals are notoriously overgenerous with calorie estimations. So maybe the treadmill is closer to the truth. Or else your body is accustomed to the elliptical and not to running so it feels like much harder work. I remember when I started running it felt like the HARDEST exercise in the world. After 10…
  • I only had one bridesmaid--my sister. And I told her she could wear whatever fabulous dress she wanted. So she bought it, but it really was a dress she'd wear again. A friend of mine was just a bridesmaid and the bride told her and the others that they could wear any black cocktail dress. The pictures look great--not…
  • I just upped mine from 1390 to 1560. I am at a healthy weight--I just want to lose a few more. And I run a lot, so I figured I could. I just changed my goal from a pound a week to a half-pound a week, and the extra calories magically appeared in my daily allotment. :) I just did it yesterday--I'll let you know how it goes.
  • Okay, you are so perfectly my twin I have to respond. (Well, my daughter is 2, and I just turned 34, but I'm 5'10 and have a 4-year-old son, so close enough!) I'm 160 right now, trying to get back to 150. And I'm running my first 10k in May. Good luck to you!
  • Most definitely. That's the main reason I run almost daily, and why I almost always do it in the morning--it gets rid of the anxiety for the rest of the day.
  • Me, me! 5'10, 160. Trying to get to 145-150, and trying to be a faster runner. (I'm more of a plodder.)
  • Checking the race results from last year was a very smart idea. I doubt I'll finish this race under an hour, but there were plenty of finishers well over that. So I won't be hobbling the last mile alone, at least. Thanks again.
  • Thanks all. You are very helpful. And I'll let you know how it goes. I do need to start making time for longer runs. Like one other poster mentioned, I'm a mom to two young kids and work full-time, so it's hard to carve out larger blocks of time. But I will!
  • I feel hunger pangs, but I kind of enjoy them. I try not to let it get to the point where it's distracting me from work or making me crabby, but I don't think they're a bad thing.
  • Well, 1.3 pounds in 10 days actually sounds pretty great to me. Think about the long term and keep doing what you're doing. Make sure your goals (calories and exercise) are realistic. You don't want to look at your log every day and see you're under your exercise goal when you are doing all you can! My schedule is…
  • Go for a long run with those new, improved lungs! And then have a glass of wine if you drink. Congrats on quitting. My dad just quit a month ago after 50 years of smoking. I'm very proud of him.
  • Never quoted before, so hope I'm not screwing it up entirely. But this isn't "bro-science." It's science. http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/features/coffee-new-health-food
  • As a happy coffee addict, I recommend keeping this vice. There have been several studies recently that show some health benefits to daily coffee. And they all seem to find that you need to drink a LOT of coffee to have those results. I only drink 1-2 cups a day, but I see nothing wrong with drinking more. Unless, of…
  • Nice! I love my hip bones. I missed them while they were away. Seriously, that is the first place I see weight loss. Congrats.
  • I'm 5'10 and 160 (you can see what that looks like in my pic). I was 140 in college and I was very, very thin. But not at all unhealthily so. I would happily weigh that again, but it is harder now in my 30s, with two kids. I think 140 at 5'9 is a great weight (and you would find that you LOVE how you look in clothes).
  • Well, I ate FAR too much pizza yesterday. And when I went on my 3-mile run this morning, it was faster and easier than usual. So I'm going to count that pizza as fuel and stop feeling guilty about it. Or so I tell myself. :)
  • I'm also 5'10". Would love to lose 15 pounds by June. I'll support you!
  • I don't really have time, but I really try to make time. I work full-time and have little kids. At least three or four mornings a week, I leave for work before 7, run on a path near work, then come back to the office to shower and dress. On the weekends, my husband and I trade home duties while the other gets exercise…
  • Beans, lentils, and tofu don't have a lot of fat. And I love quinoa, which looks like a grain but is really a seed. It has a lot of protein, too.
  • I get this! I've gotten a lot better since I started yoga. I still get driven crazy (it's practically a permanent state; I have a 2 yo and a 4yo) but I find it much easier to maintain my cool. Also, getting enough sleep makes a huge difference. And when I'm REALLY at my wits' end, I think about this story:…
  • No, only intentional exercise that takes me more than 20 minutes. And usually not walks--only runs. I figure everything else is just bonus (and makes up for anything I ate without logging).
  • A lot of J Crew's shirts come in tall sizes--especially their work shirts. I have super-long arms and that's one of the few places I've found that sells shirts with sleeves long enough for my spider arms. They also make many of their shoes up to a size 12!
  • Hi! Nice to be in tall company. I just joined, too. I'm 5'10, 162, and would like to get below 150 sometime soon. I find 160 very easy to maintain, and anything lower to be a bit of a challenge. I'm up for it, though.
  • I have the exact same stats. Would love to be 140 but would be happy with 145. I need to stop snacking constantly after I get home from work. Good luck to you, twin!
  • I remember hearing 500 calories a day. But it didn't seem like I needed that much extra--maybe more like 300. And I still lost lots of weight while nursing! I would suggest just not adding in 300 calories worth of food. Just make sure it's 300 healthy calories. :) As for the 2nd question, I don't really know; I'm new here.…
  • 5'10 and 160 here. I would love to lose 15; if I lose 25, I would be delighted. My stumbling block is my schedule. Like a lot of people, I work full time and have two little children who require a lot of attention. (And I want to spend time with them!) I'm bad about packing my lunch; I also eat their leftovers and snack…
  • 1) To weigh 135 pounds by my 35th birthday (I'm 5'10, so this might be impossible) 2) Run a half-marathon 3) Write a novel No big deal, right?
  • I know what you mean! Weight is a whole different thing when you are tall. I'm 5'10" and was very thin (but very healthy) at 145. Now I'm at 160, size 8, and look okay but would love to get back to 145. I don't have a narrow frame, though.
