I think you are misunderstanding me. What is dangerous is having or learning the mindset that a person should not question and challenge the ideas that are offered to them. "Faith" is one of the many ways that people get to that kind of mindset. Logical, rational thinking is something that has to be practiced.....it's hard…

Really......it's ok to say "I don't know" I don't know.....yet.......and there are a lot of really smart people doing work on these very questions rather than making up fairy tales and trying to pawn them off as the truth.
-
More like.....there's not enough solid evidence to accept that there is a higher power......just like there is not enough solid evidence to accept that there is a bigfoot, Loch Ness monster, etc. Lot's of really smart folks have been working on these questions.......not enough evidence.....therefore we can only accept the…

As yes......The Argument from the Ineffable. Here's one for ya: The Argument from Torquemada......See that burning stake over there? Therefore god exists.

More like......there is not enough evidence for a higher power. Therefore, the default position is to accept the Null Hypothesis until such time that there is enough evidence to change our minds on the subject. It's not that many atheists are not willing to accept that a higher power exists......it's just that we haven't…

Very well said!

Faith is also very dangerous because it leaves a person open for others to take advantage of them. We see this in the news all the time.....sometimes related to religious things......just as often there are con artists in the secular world. It all goes back to choosing to believe in stuff without any good proof to validate…

Not sure why you would think option 3 constitutes muddying the waters. I think option 3 provides the clearest path to your goals. A person who operates with option 3 only has themselves to point the finger at for both success and failure in meeting goals. Option 2 is also a clearer path to goal attainment with…

Clearly? I think not. Contradictions and outright nasty behavior (that is glorified) are all through out the bible. Actually....reading that thing is one of the major reasons why I am an atheist today. Much less cognitive dissonance to deal with. :-)

How about dispensing with all the fluffy stuff and go directly to self-responsibility?
-
Just wondering.......if we are made in his image.......why aren't we all invisible? Also.....how do you know what kind of person god wants you to be? Do you get a phone call every day with your instructions?
-
Well....no...... That would only be true if there were overwhelming evidence (the double-blinded, easily replicated, validated by multiple sources kind) that there actually is a God or greater power, etc. Atheists have evidence.......you don't have any of the type that really counts.

I have no faith in anything except in my own abilities to learn about the world and how it works......and to challenge myself to continuous improvement. I don't just "believe" in stuff......especially if there is an authority figure telling me I have to believe what they say is the "truth". I arrive at certain conclusions…

I went to a lab with my husband last week and we both got tested at rest and during exercise. We had to wear masks and breath through a tube into an analysis machine. Stuff like this is not subject to belief.....there is real science behind it. You can have your own opinions, but the facts remain the same.

Hi there. I'm so sorry that you have to go through all this. From your post, you seem like a hard-working, committed, caring, and fun father and husband. I learned a long time ago, that other people will do what they want to, and that doesn't always jive with what you want. You can't change them.....they have to get to…

I have this book. It's excellent if you don't want the hype and the BS and the fad-diet thing. He does his research. He presents ideas well and he doesn't pull punches about how hard you have to work in order to get to your goals. You should go on his site and buy it. It's only fair since he spent a lot of time and energy…

I really love Leanne Ely's Saving Dinner series. She has both a regular and a low-carb book. There are even ready-made shopping lists for each week on her web site. The books are divided up by season, so that you can use recipes that make the best use of seasonal produce. Using the shopping lists has saved me loads of…
