@clairenotready Haha, You're welcome. Assuming some base fitness, an August race would give you a 12-14 week build time frame. That works. All you need to do is hit the " Register Now" button and then the fun starts. :)

How to make an old dude blush, lol!! I’ve done lots of tri’s including 7 HIM distance and 2 full IMs. The 70.3 is the best! Big crowds, lots of energy, very supportive atmosphere. And no rush for 140.6 distance. I waited and did my first at 60 yrs old. Look forward to hearing more.

In reading this thread and thinking more about your original post, I would echo @sijomial's comment: There is nothing like having a race on the schedule to help me focus. Without that deadline, I tend to drift. So given your stated dissatisfaction with your current situation and lack of clear direction in your fitness…

Five of us got together to ride on a perfect weather day. We rode a 47 mile route that wasn't too hilly, so it was all fun. Ave pace was 16.2mph, not counting the stop for coffee and muffin at mile 40.

Your experience is so similar to many folks I know. Most in the group of roughly 20 folks I train with (45-65yrs old) have come from a "running first" background. At least 5 Boston Marathon finishers and a dozen Ironman finishers in the mix, many of whom have shifted to trail running (100 mile trail races are in vogue…

75 minute trail run this morning. Tomorrow's forecast is for perfect weather. Looks like a fairly large group will gather for a 50 mile ride.

That looks like a fun plan! If I'm reading it correctly, its two bike/strength days and one weekend Bike/MTB day that is for "fun". Is the Higdon plan an 8 week plan? I assume so based on the table. After 8 weeks of that plan, you may get the itch to measure your increased fitness in a race. If a race is an unstated goal,…

@Mike, I understand completely. I played for a bunch of years, rather poorly, including as part of my job while entertaining business customers. Bottom line is that as competitive as I am by nature, I couldn't stand to play poorly, so I stopped. Last night, enjoyed a 5k trail run with a small group. Did a lap swim today at…

Does this mean a second sports career is unfolding for you?? That's good stuff. I don't play, but both of my sons do. The younger one is pretty good. (high 70's)

Trainer session at gym. 3 different pairings of weighted movements, first an upper body then a lower body movement done for four rounds before moving to the next pairing. Trainer pulled me aside and suggested I do a "bonus" each round, which was 30 sec max effort on the skier or assault bike. Was a good session. Joining a…

Only am strength session yesterday, due to some work travel. Trainer set up rounds of single arm/single leg work with heavier weights than usual. Ended with 3 rounds of ten goblet squats right into 15 squat jumps. Modest pool workout today. 1500 yds during lunch. 600 yds of Swim/kick/pull drills as a warmup, then some 50s…

Traded my Sunday long run/swim for another bike ride yesterday. Joined a group of nine friends who are working to build bike endurance for the Watkins Glen race in July. Plan was to ride a 40 mile flattish course at an easy pace. (Some are fairly new cyclists). We had a crash halt our ride after only 18 miles. While on a…

Quite a high intensity effort! If you weren't dead after that routine, then nothing will kill you! ;)

Group ride was nothing but fun. Sixty degrees and sunny for our 35 mile ride. We got in roughly 1800 ft of climbing, but nothing too taxing given the overall 16mph pace. We even took a 5min stop midway through to refill bottles (and take a selfie, lol). I also got to see my friend Kristen's badass new time trial bike for…

Lap swim shortened due to pending work calls, so I focused on drills for 30 minutes. Roughly 1100 yds using fins, snorkel, paddles, etc. I was able to get out for a 3.5mile trail run last night. Weather was perfect. We have a small group ride planned for later today. This will be a fun ride, with plenty of chances to push…

short trainer ride last night. 40 min ez spin. Giving myself a pep talk about getting into the pool at lunch and maybe a run later.

If you're referring to my age, you're dead right! ;) Your approach to fitness seems perfectly on target to me. If taken as standalone events, most of what we do for fitness daily is not that exciting*, nor is any one workout the "make or break" factor. IMO, it is simply building the HABIT of being active that is the key.…

While you may not like Garmin's suggestion, I would say that you're in a fantastic position at a top 5% level of fitness. I know how much work is involved to get there. Congrats!

Gym session with trainer this am. Two 18 minute blocks, each consisting of 4 different movements done as a circuit as many times as possible. First circuit: KB sit to standing position, pushups done on Bosu, Calf raises/heel drops, rope slams. Second Circuit: Side lunges on slider, planks with arm reaches, biceps curls…

That sounds fun and challenging! Way to go. Nothing wrong with a 2hr/17.4mph workout! I'm sure that during your turns at the front "pulling" you were really working hard. I've often told friends that when cycling with our group (mostly women, btw), I feel like I'm being chased by a pack of wolves. One of the women even…

Easy 40 minute trail run today.

Yes, indeed!

Back at the gym after vacation. 45 minutes of kettlebell, TRX, stability ball work, etc with the trainer.

It really all boils down to this idea. The "Big Bang" Theory when starting exercise NEVER works over the long term. IMO, simply developing an exercise habit is the best approach. Once it becomes a habit, you're on your way.

Interesting that you refer to the microbiome. I've been trying to refine my eating habits to lean more and more in a direction that supports optimal gut health. As far as the longevity angle, I've always believed that exercise was essential to a long Health Span, but I just didn't think of it as having a such a dramatic…

Took my last ride in Florida for this week, just 21 miles at 16.2 ave pace. Followed with a short transition run of twenty five minutes. A sinus infection held me to only one swim this week, but I managed to get in 147 miles on the bike plus a couple short runs. May get time to run tomorrow before the return flight.

Long ride today. Sunny warm and quite breezy. Rode 71 miles @ 15.8mph ave. Went from Jupiter Florida north to Stuart and return via Juno beach. Focused on electrolyte intake and cooling tactics during the ride. Took in 6 bottles of fluid and used another two to assist in cooling. Met a 67 year old woman who is riding from…

Casual bike riding to and from the pool, plus some tooling around totaled roughly 15 miles. Lap pool swim was 1700 yds, all done at an easy pace (2:08/100 ave)
-
Agree. Well done! That’s a solid result!

First ride of the vacation week in Florida, including a scenic section along Jupiter Island. Pancake flat terrain but a stiff breeze during the return trip. Got in 43 miles at a 17.2 ave. Planning a short ride and pool swim for today.
