Sorry if I misunderstood. The OP read as if you were shooting for (3 * 143 = 429 g) of protein a day, which is excessive. As you've now clarified it to 240 g per day, that's still high, but achievable. We were trying to help by pointing out you didn't need 400 g, but I guess you've figured that out! And yes, calculators…

This. The often used rule of thumb is around 0.8 g protein per lb of total mass. But with a mass of 400+ lbs, you are going to be throwing that guideline off. So maybe go with 1.0 g per lb of lean body mass, or 1 g/lb target weight. Somewhere around 150-200 g of protein per day would be plenty. So, decide what your overall…

The smallest plate you have is 5 kgs (10 lbs)? That is big! My weight set came with 2.5 and 5 lb weights. You can also get "fractional" plates in smaller sizes. I'd look into buying a few more plates. BTW - is it a "standard" size bar (1")? If you get serious doing squats/deadlifts, you may find you need an olympic bar and…

All Pro's Simple Beginners Routine is more adaptable to dumbbells that Starting Strength, Stronglifts etc. I did it for a while, before I got access to a bar. http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=147447933

It is hard to get good form with dumbbells if you have your arms holding them down by your sides. Ideally, you want to use a barbell, but I know this isn't always possible. Regardless, you want you knees over the toes, wherever they end up. Go as deep as possible, so yes, sacrifice weight right now for depth (you can lift…

Middle. I look to cook "real" food, but will use a box sometimes.

Yup!

The only place I can find that quote as attributed to Einstein is on 3 paleo sites. What is your source for it? Regardless, cooking has been around for a while, and it has been suggested that cooking food allowed us to get more calories from our meals and that led to our increased brain size. As to making, it really…

I thought this was going to a Dr Oz thread. Disappointed

You are leaving a lot of protein "on the table" most days (I just went back a week or so). Not enough protein! As to carbs - they are a rich source of calories. If you are trying to eat more, then why would you want to cut them back? Because if you do, you'll need to eat more fat or protein anyways to make up the "missing"…

Sucrose (table sugar) is a simple carb (a combination of glucose and fructose): These are complex carbohydrates, where each dot represents a single sugar molecule. Note - they can be much longer than shown here - up to several thousand sugars per chain. The complex carbs need to get broken down to the simple sugars before…

Well to put on weight, you MUST eat more than your TDEE. It's math! To ensure that the most possible amount of that weight is muscle and not fat, lift heavy weights. Your BMI puts you in the "normal" range though, and your %BF (if correct) is in the healthy range too, so I'm not 100% sure why the doctor is worried. BUT he…

How did you determine your body fat, by the way? If you used one of those scale combo thingies, be aware that they can be very inaccurate. But if your Doc has told you to gain weight, I'd start bulking now, and worry about the fat later.

No idea what those programs are. Have you looked at Starting Strength or Stronglifts instead? Both great programs for increasing strength and gaining muscle mass. You need to be lifting progressively heavier each session in order to maximise muscle growth. Thing is though - if you want to gain muscle, you have to eat at a…

There are two basic types of workout you can do: splits, or full body. If you do a split program, then you will break up the exercises so you do different muscle groups on different days (and allow them to rest while you work different ones). In a full body program, you work all the muscles every workout with compound…

I'd have put the %DV column on the right, where it belongs, but other than that, it looks OK. It also seems they have increased the amount of Dietary fiber we are supposed to eat. On the left, 4g is 16%; on the right, the same 4g is 14%. And is there no DV for protein?

And beer! Though I like clementines too!

I believe protein turnover in an active (or starving) person can be up to 150 g per day. ~30 g is a standard minimum needed for maintaining protein due to the bodies normal turnover.

Nutrients. Macronutrients = fat, protein and carbohydrates. Micronutrients = vitamins, minerals etc that your body also needs.

Booze started ruining my fitness progress too. So I quit as well. Now, I just drink and don't worry about fitness. :drinker: ETA: OK... not really. I just cut back on the amount I was drinking.

Random aside here, but how does one do hydrochloric acid supplementation? It's not like you can drink the stuff...

Yeah, the cook should salt the food appropriately so you don't need to ;-) But runnergrlfl was right. We need salt, and the guidelines are possibly set too low. It isn't something you need to worry about unless you already have high bp. If your bp is too low, that is something to talk to your Doctor about!

In for the roll!!! And to respond to this: Nutritional stress is the stress that chronic nutrient shortage has on people. i.e. starvation and subsistence living. Do you mean the thermic effect of food (TEF)?

Actually, I've never heard of that! But now I want to try some for a homebrew. The mouth feel of a wheat, with the spiciness of a rye...

There is currently no GM wheat on the market. But is ANYONE going to tell me all the awful things that have happened to wheat by normal breeding methods in the past 50 years that makes it so toxic now?

I thought grass-fed beef basically just had LESS fat than grain fed. There might be some difference in the ratios, but the overall amount of omega fatty acids is pretty low IIRC. And yes, more examples, please. Everyone here keeps saying how wheat has changed...

You said genetically modified. Standard plant breeding is generally not referred to as "genetically modified", so I assumed you meant GMO. Please explain to me exactly how the breeding that has been done in modern times has actually changed the composition and nutritional value of wheat, with a specific emphasis on being…
