I see you're a teenager. Unless you have health issues, don't worry about low fat or even low carb. Just work on your calorie goal and try to make your food choices as healthy as possible. Here are some healthy higher calorie foods. Most of them are not low fat: Peanut butter and other nut butters. Nuts in general Olive…

Haven't read most of the replies, but thought I'd jump in here: I love toast with poached eggs (or any soft-cooked egg). A good substitute for the toast/bread here are roasted root vegetables. You get the satisfying combo of eggs and starches, but the root vegetables (I find) are more satisfying (and probably a bit more…

This is similar to my situation. I'm netting about 1800, sometimes more, sometimes less. Trying to figure out my maintenance level as well. I'm a few pounds below my goal weight, so I'm okay with gaining, but aiming for muscle (obviously).

I'm going to try for 60 this month: 6/1: 3.2 miles

I think that's exactly what she's trying to do.

From your diary, it looks like you eat salad. You could try raw baby spinach in a salad (more nutritious than lettuces, though nothing wrong with those either). Take baby steps towards things like broccoli, cauliflower, and green beans by trying them raw in small quantities. If you've done that and don't like them, then…

If it were me, I'd go hog wild on my granola. A cup of that plus some milk would be about 600 calories. It would also probably complete your carb and fat requirements for the day. Not sold in stores, though.

I just looked up the apple cider vinaigrette in the database. For 2 ounces (1/4 cup), it has 230 calories. That's actually pretty good. A standard serving of salad dressing is 1 ounce (2 tablespoons), so far that amount, it would be 115 calories. That's probably all I would put on a salad. The point I think a lot of people…

Vinaigrette is typically a mix of oil and vinegar. The classic ratio, I believe, is 2 parts oil to one part vinegar, but you can obviously lighten it up by reducing the proportion of oil.

Re: refried beans: If your store carries them, switch to La Preferida's refried beans. The "Authentic" version is made with lard, which is an ingredient in traditional refried beans. They also have fat free and other varieties, but the Authentic version tastes better.

That sounds divine--NOT!

I'm okay with okra, especially in gumbo, but this sounds awesome!

It wasn't a long bean. It was an individual bean, maybe a little bigger than a pinto bean, and perhaps pale green or tan (can't remember) in color. I also can't remember if it was fermented. It seemed very unadorned, and I got the sense that the taste was pretty much due to the bean. If it was fermented, I could see that…

Some kind of bean at a Thai restaurant. It was listed on the menu with a warning, so of course we wanted to try it. At first, it didn't seem so bad, but then the taste settled in. The only word I can think of to describe it is putrid. Anyone know the name of this bean?

Oh yeah! Nasty. And I like both tofu and (proper) hot dogs.

OMG, that sounds awful. Tomato soup as a basis for spaghetti sauce! My experience with Germans is that they're good cooks. I think the Irish messed her up.

You haven't had a good one! Ratatouille with polenta is heavenly. (Looking forward to August when all the relevant produce is in.)

We have jam in the U.S. I make my own 1% Greek yogurt and mix it with homemade granola, ground flaxseed, and sometimes a bit of honey. When I want it a little sweeter (and smoother) I'll add some regular vanilla yogurt, like Brown Cow. I just bought some whole vanilla beans to make my own vanilla yogurt. I tried it…

I'm in! I've come back to iceberg lettuce after 20 years of being a snobby salad greens person. To me, they all have their place. Iceberg is a great summertime lettuce--super refreshing after a run. It's also great with blue cheese dressing. You really can't use blue cheese on delicate salad greens. Celery is another one.…

Pasta is one of the things I've cut way back on. When we do have it (once a week at the very most), I limit myself to the 2-ounce serving. I find that I'm pretty satisfied with that amount as long as I've had enough protein and vegetables (and fat--usually olive oil) to go along with it. I try not to have pasta leftovers…

These sounds good. I think the main effect of replacing the oil with applesauce would be to make the bars stickier and more crumbly. They'd still probably taste good, though. I'd personally keep the oil for the better texture. For 12 bars, 1/4 cup of oil is only 1 tsp. per bar (about 33 calories).

[/quote] As far as the person who "doesn't want to lose anymore weight", EAT MORE! For those who want to lose weight, remember, the more muscle you have, the more calories you BURN. I highly promote weight lifting and tabata (HIIT), it worked for me. Anyone who is dedicated CAN and WILL lose the weight. I used to weight…

I've heard this before, but it doesn't make any sense, at least for me. As of today, I'm 126 pounds. I've been eating between 1700 and 1800 calories, and I'm still losing weight, which I no longer want to do. If I ate only 1260 calories, I'd be a skeleton.

Yep. Macros = too much to deal with when you're first starting out. It might not be a bad idea, though, to try to increase the protein content (in a general way) of your morning and afternoon meals if they're a little light in that area. That could help with cravings/satiety.

100% agree. This has been my experience as well, except I've just started the lifting. I'm also 48 (5'6") and also started in January. Since then I've lost 32 pounds (158 to 126), gone from a tight, ill-fitting size 12 to a loose size 8. For exercise, I started with treadmill running. Although I wasn't lifting weights at…

Actually I do find that *good* fruit will completely stop my cravings for sweets in their tracks. I understand, though, that not everyone likes fruit that much or gets the same enjoyment from it. I completely agree with your view of ice cream. I'm finding I'm eating it several times a week, but I generally stick to the 1/2…
