  • I agree with this. Calorie counting isn't something to be dreaded, it's valuable information about what's in food rather than hiding it behind some wacky scheme. Like I now know that packet X of crisps (chips if you're American) has 250 calories, so I can either eat some pretzels (140 calories) instead or I can go for a 15…
  • Mr Garmin FR60 has a footpod like the nike thing that goes on your shoe (or in it if you have the right nike shoe), so it can measure my speed, distance etc. It's not a GPS but as I run on a treadmill too the GPS would be a waste of time. I've been really pleased with it.
  • Do you know what it is specifically that is causing them to be concerned? Have they said? You might find that they're trying to be nice and are concerned because you lost weight quickly, because you seem tired, weak, don't fit their model of healthy etc? I think what they've done is inappropriate and if it were me I'd go…
  • Twinings English Breakfast Tea with enough milk to bring out the vanilla.
  • Suggest having a break for 2 years - you can concentrate on your career - he can see if he can find someone more suited to what he wants. If you're both no further forward in 2 years get back together and see if things have changed. If you're a high flying city lady and he's at home with a wife and kids - then you know it…
  • I think a HRM will be of benefit to your running above just measuring calories burnt. I've said this in a few posts but I recommend reading "Heart Monitor Training for the Compleat Idiot" which explains how to use a HRM rather than just wear one. I found I was running in a heart rate wasteland - not running hard enough on…
  • I recommend the book "Heart Monitor Training for the Compleat Idiot" It talks about 2 zones, your working zone and your recovery zone. I planned my runs around these zones. Over 170bpm (for me) for Interval runs and sprints. Less than 140bpm for long distance recovery runs - which seemed very slow and made me walk at the…
  • my brain couldn't do the maths for 8 hours of sleeping, so I just went with 12. Maybe if I got 12 hours sleep I could do more complicated maths.
  • I read this recently "what others think of me is none of my business" - while I know it isn't this straight forward I kind of liked it, it reminded me that I can't change what people think - but then I'm not doing this for those people. Good luck - feel free to add me.
  • Brilliant, well done - I can relate to this. I love being the guy at the gym who is pounding out the miles on the treadmill. People run next to me for 10 minutes and then go on to something else then someone else comes along for a bit, ths happens a few times while I'm slowly running for an hour or so. I feel like a…
  • Just checked the details from my run today: Endomondo had it at 400 calories, MFP thought it was nearer 600. The treadmill said 150ish. My HRM said about 400 (about 100 per km for me, or 13 per minute). I generally use Endomondo as it seems to most often match my HRM, but it seems like that's not a common experience.
  • I have a HRM but that still varies. I did some experiments on my bike trainer with it when I had a fixed workout, distance, resistance etc but my heart rate still varied depending on how tired I was, how hydrated etc. I find that my Heart Rate monitor tends to agree with endomondo (an app on my phone) for things like…
  • Got to the gym and realised I had the wrong shorts - picked up L instead of XL - tried them on and they were good enough to run in so I went for a run. Didn't fancy trying squats in them, but running was fine.
  • Well done for having the courage to get out when you did - I can imagine that would have been hard. But, imagine how awful it would be another year or two down the line - or how tied you'd feel if you'd bought a place together, had kids etc. It was a good escape. Find a different gym, go to different places, find a…
  • was always overweight but didn't know anything about proper nutrition. Didn't matter so much as a kid as I was super active - that all changed when I got a desk job. It didn't help living in New York for 6 months on expenses either. Now I'm finally starting to realise I can't out exercise a bad diet so need to start to…
  • Male 42 5'8" Heaviest: 275 Lightest: 220 (lightest in my adult life since I've been measuring) Current: 236 Goal: 220 by Christmas UGW: 195 (would make me overweight, not obese)
  • point out you were in the red genuinely made me laugh out loud
  • oh I see, you need to have "all updates" in your feed - that's pretty handy (although calling it a "feed" seems like a cruel reminder)
  • I can't comment on the sense of what you're doing - lots of people have "cheat days" - I prefer the approach of eating what I want, when I want but making sure I come in on the calorie allowance for the day. I've trained for things like big bike rides, half marathons etc. and not lost weight - I'm sure it's because I…
  • I'm in the uk, my diary is open to friends - feel free to add me.
  • Hello I'm Steve a 41 year old 238lb man from England. I've just started using MFP properly after finding inspiration in these forums - I've had the app on my phone for ages but never really used it. I'm looking forward to the weight loss challenge. I'm used to challenging myself, but usually physically (which gives me a…
  • I'm in too - great idea.
  • I did it a couple of years ago and have since run the Reading half marathon twice, and the Great South Run twice. I almost died the first week running for 30 seconds, so I'd say it worked for me. A couple of points about it: 1) I didn't lose massive amounts of weight, because I wasn't tracking my calories - so I was fitter…
  • Feel free to add me, I'm a recent starter and full of enthusiasm at the moment.
  • These are all steady runs? Any intervals or tempo runs in here? I thought shorter distance interval runs were good for building stamina. I did a plan to get me through a half marathon that involved interval and tempo runs in the week and then a long slow run at the weekend. I don't know much about it but it seemed to make…
  • My advice is to slow down. I struggled a bit when getting to the 20 minute runs until I learnt to slow down. I found running at 10-12kph comfortable but I couldn't run for very long - I slowed down to 8kph and although it felt like I was hardly moving I could run for much longer. I actually bought a Heart Rate Monitor that…
  • so does cake, but that's hardly in the spirit of things :)
  • I go for water and a change of scene - something to distract me until the hunger passes. Fill up a bottle of water and go for a walk - if I'm still hungry when I get back then I'm genuinely hungry so I eat something - most of the time I'm not really hungry and it passes. It's more likely I'm bored, or thirsty or in the…
  • I'm at the start of my journey so don't have much practical advice but there's a group called Eat, Train, Progress where if you fill out a questionnaire in your post they'll have a look at your diary, weight, height, goals etc. and feed back some advice on people who feel they've plateaued. The first thing that they often…
