  • Yes, they're definitely good enough. The elliptical tends to burn more calories per hour due to the fact that you're still supporting your body weight, but both will burn calories and raise your cardiovascular fitness.
  • I think that the responses this has got in the few minutes since it was posted is some indication of how supportive this community is :) Add a few friends and take a few small steps in the right direction. Logging your food is a huge part of awareness, and just knowing what you're putting in your body can help to set you…
  • During weights, I find music unnecessary, but during cardio, as a metalhead, it's been Metallica, Pantera, Slayer, Machine Head, Arch Enemy, Slipknot, Rage Against The Machine and Devildriver for me the past month. But pretty much anything that's got fast drums and shredding guitars. It also helps if it's got slow parts…
  • That's hilarious. Luckily in South Africa shorts are considered semi-formal in most circles  I do understand the thing he says about the leather seats though - I got into my sister's car once when it was about 38 degrees outside, and ended up howling like a wolf when the leather touched my legs :embarassed:
  • Nobody know anything about this?

  • Oh yes. I think I've bored my sister stiff going on about it, and have told pretty much all my friends about it. Luckily I have awesome supportive friends :)
  • A friend of mine actually used this one in a club: "I'm sorry, I seem to have lost my ear-muffs. Could I borrow your thighs?"
  • Read an interesting post on this topic from a doctor a while back and he said that sweating isn't any indication that your workout is actually effective or burning a substantial amount of calories (someone was worried that the fact that they weren't sweating during their workout meant they weren't getting a proper…

  • To each their own. That method of doing it wouldn't work for me, and I've come across too many reputable sources suggesting that smaller more frequent meals are better for you due to the balancing out of your blood sugar throughout the day to abandon what's currently working for me. I don't see that you need to have a…
  • What, that you need to have less calories in vs calories out in order to lose weight? Is this even in dispute?
  • I've heard the exact opposite. I read about a study whereby they provided test groups with the same caloric intake in either 3 or 6 meals per day, and although there wasn't a significant difference in the weight loss, the group which ate fewer meals lost more muscle mass over the course of the study. I'd be interested to…
  • From what I've read, the effects and benefits are greatly overstated - interesting article on Acai berries at http://www.burnthefatblog.com/archives/2011/04/acai-berry-scam-shocking-proof.php The conclusion of the article states: 'The ADA’s position statement on Acai gives good advice: “Until the health benefits of the…
  • I'd start incorporating strength training from today. While it's true that to build major muscle mass you need to be in a calorie surplus, if you're new to strength training the chances are that you will pick up a fair bit of muscle quickly and easily. Once you're closer to your goal weigh you can look at changing this up…
  • How many calories are you eating on your cheat day? If you go all out that can easily undo all the work that you do for the rest of the week. Also, maybe do a recalculation of your BMR and calorie goals - due to the decreased weight, your BMR will have decreased, and you may not have a very big deficit if your calorie…
  • Ok, so BMR is calculated from your age, height and weight. This is your Basal Metabolic Rate which is what you would burn off if you lie in bed all day. This is your body using up calories to do things like breathing, thinking, regulating body temperature etc. Now on top of this, you have your activity level, which is the…
  • I actually just cancelled my Wow subscription today as I haven't played for 3 months or so. I'm playing LA Noire on the PS3 at the moment - it's amazing - the faces and expressions need to be seen to be believed.

  • Yeah, I loved Religulous.
  • If you've lost 10bls in 11 days, the chances are extremely high that it was a water weight loss (if you start drinking more water your body doesn't try to hold onto its reserves of water so much). In the initial stages a lot of people do see major weight losses, but this shouldn't be expected in the medium to long term - a…
  • Your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is your BMR multiplied by your activity level. It's 1.2 for sedentary, 1.375 for lightly active, 1.55 for moderately active etc. The 1 lb a week goal will take your TDEE and subtract 500 calories from that to give you your daily calorie goal. Hope this helps.
  • Most of these health bars that are loaded with refined sugar
  • I personally love it. It's an extra 15 minutes of my day (if that) and then I can hold myself entirely accountable for any weight loss or gain. I log everything, because it helps to make me stop and think before I have anything unhealthy. However, if you don't like it, don't use it - if you feel you can be as successful…
  • Hey, and welcome to the site. I'm from SA myself (Cape Town) and although there's not that much South African stuff on here, you can find some snoek and biltong in the database :) Sending you a friend request now for some extra motivation and support. Steven
  • Welcome, and good luck on your journey. Feel free to add me as a friend if you'd like some support and encouragement. Steven

  • I can understand that you don't like it (not to everyone's taste) but some of those musicians are insanely talented. As for things I don't like that most people seem to; pretty much any pop music that's on the radio these days, lobster, prawns, and fake boobs :)
  • There's 8 teaspoons of sugar in a bottle of vitamin water - really not a healthy drink at all.
  • French, Italian and Eastern European work for me. I've got quite a pronounced London accent and live in South Africa, and I end up getting told that I've got a sexy accent on a fairly regular basis.
  • The only supplements I'd suggest are a good multivitamin and an Omega 3 & 6 supplement (if you don't get enough from things like salmon, which not many people do). Apart from those, I don't think anything else is really necessary.
  • I've read that it's very good, and contains good levels of Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. Haven't tried it myself though.
  • Hey, and welcome. I'm assuming from the name that you're a Nirvana fan? :) Tips that I'd offer: Make sure that you've set your goals - be definite and specific and set yourself realistic timelines. Write these down and look at them every day to drill them into your subconscious. Log everything. Even if you think that one…
