As I was losing weight, I became aware of the 'paper towel' effect (someone else came up with the concept - I wish I could remember so I could give credit)... The idea is that if you take a paper towel off a full roll, you really don't notice much difference, but as the roll gets smaller you can tell the difference with…

For me, it's better to KNOW that I'm hitting my calorie goals, than to guess - my guessing ability demonstrably stinks. I've gotten away from logging food a couple of times in the years that I've been using the site - each time I gained weight. Call it a tool or call it a crutch, but it's clear that if I want to maintain…

Idiots... this is why we can't have good things.

By definition, cookies cannot be polarizing... Pancakes, on the other hand...

Assuming a decent payout, retain an attorney and set up an anonymous trust to provide me and a select group of friends and family an annual income for life... then start traveling the world.

I'm not sure it fits in with your goals, but I started with a 20-week beginner program (I had run about 10 HMs previously). I chose this plan because it was 4 runs through the week (including one tempo run) - none longer than 6 miles - and then the weekend long runs. It was pretty convenient. Since this is your first…

Awesome progress *and* a sustainable approach...! Congratulations...!

Solid advice above... Are you eating your exercise calories? If so, how are you determining your exercise burn? Typically, fitness trackers, machines, and even the MFP exercise database tend to overstate calories burned for a given activity. If you're eating all (or a portion) of your exercise calories, reduce the…

You were too quick for me... I had quite the accusation queued up and ready for action... Foiled!

Everybody approaches it a little differently, but I've always found it helpful to define my end-state / long-term goal, and then define smaller supporting / short- & mid-term goals that will help me get there. The shorter-term goals are good for highlighting progress and help keep the longer-term goal in sight. As you go…

The Devil's Rain... though it did have one redeeming element; it gave us Michael Meyers's iconic mask...

Unless you're eating at that local hole every day, one dining experience isn't going to make or break your meal planning. And if you ARE eating at that local hole every day, is it 1150 or 1150 +/- 200 depending on who's cooking today? Do you really think that meal prep is standardized enough that any calorie count listed…

It's not what you eat so much as how much. If you continue to eat what you're eating now, but less of it, you'll be consuming fewer calories and spending less money than you are presently. Easy.

Another vote for whatever time is likely to help you be consistent. I prefer mornings because (for me) there are generally no surprises. There are too many variables that can come into play that would more likely conflict with an evening workout (again, for me).

Absolutely...! When I first started with MFP, I lost 65 pounds with walking as my only form of exercise, so it's very possible and a great way to start. However, there are a couple of small caveats to consider (this was my experience, but I think it will hold true fairly universally). 1) As you lose weight, you obviously…

Another vote for not setting a default... I usually have three pairs of runners in rotation - I just pick whichever shoes I wore for a particular activity.

Unless these office parties are daily occurrences, I agree with the 'find something close' recommendations. I tend to use an entry a little higher than I would guess to give myself some headroom for error - I learned a long time ago not to drive myself crazy trying to be accurate on an entry I'm only going to log once.

^ This... You need to find your determination. Define some achievable goals; even starting with something as basic as 'work out x times a week' and tracking your success rate over time can help. When those goals have been met, up the ante and repeat. A personal example: I'm training for my first full marathon. In training…

My last trail race, I fell three times... I kept tripping over roots... it was embarrassing. My worst fall, though, was when I was on an out and back in the rain and just happened to hit my turn point on a wooden boardwalk. I knew the treated lumber would be slippery, so I took my turn nice and easy - or so I thought... My…

Capitalism has brought us our current obesity epidemic... food insecurity across the globe is largely due to socialism/communism and corrupt third world governments. Would you rather have the food options of the United States or Venezuela? South Korea or North Korea? Also there's this:…

Balegas or Feetures... They're a little pricey, but the they'll last forever if you never put them in the dryer. Like most things running-related, socks are subjective. If you really want to find what works best for you (material, length, fit, etc.), I'd advise buying a few different pairs at your running store and putting…
