  • Nice one Matt. So... perhaps you can help me out. I’ve tried to work what “*kitten*” means and am puzzled and intrigued. Is it just a substitute for an expletive?
  • Congratulations on your progress. That’s a phenomenal effort. My wife has some lose skin and it can create the impression she’s carrying more fat than she is. Your case seems borderline to me, although I’m new to this. I guess the key thing to have in mind that you can’t gain weight without gaining fat, so if you have in…
  • Lots of disagrees on this one. I was quite impressed. It pretty much nailed my TDEE. How come it’s controversial?
  • Comment inspired by Starting Strength, which I’ve recently read. Whole milk contains nearly 400 calories per pint, with a decent blend of macros and nutrients. Two pints a day and I’d guess you’ll see progress.
  • 5”7 and 12 stone sounds quite solidly built to me. I’m an ectomorph too. I was keen to gain weight in you younger years. Before you know it you’re in your forties with an oversized waistline and the doctor is tutting at you cholesterol levels. I’ve never been over a BMI of 28 I think. Over 20% BF is getting into the…
  • I note you’re aiming for a BMI of 28. Is the reason aesthetics or sports? Do you know what sort of BF% you’re going for?
  • I’m doing my first cut phase, by the way. I’m doing 80% of TDEE with macros at 40-40-20 (carb-protein-fat). When cutting you need to eat more protein than when you’re bulking (a surplus of what you need) to convince your body to burn fat while maintaining muscle. That differs from bulking where you just need to eat more…
  • (Apologies, I misread your post and thought your gains were over a month 😁) What height are you? Also, what’s your longer term objective? You’ve said 13st but presumably you’d what that to be primarily muscle rather than fat?
  • I wasn’t aware of them. I guess I wasn’t the target demographic. This feels like the kind of thing Netflix cover in their documentaries.
  • One of those threads where I’m not even clear what we’re arguing about anymore. We’re all saying that BMI is a useful general metric despite some flaws? Anyways... time to check out.

  • To be clear, at no point have I suggested BMI is trash. I’ve said it’s simplicity makes its usefulness. I have pointed out that it is inconsistent across a range of heights and I’ve said I think BBMI, waist circumference, and waist ratios are better (which research seems to support). I take exception to arguments along the…

  • You can’t have it both ways... BMI is a screening tool that’s context dependent AND people don’t like it because it says they’re overweight. Pick one.

  • That didn’t take long. The Google summary said the same. 😀 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3564926/ (Edit to add the summary I saw) In healthy men waist circumference correlated more strongly with physical fitness (as calculated by a maximal fitness test) than the BMI, whereas in healthy women BMI correlated…

  • I’ve just discovered the BBMI (Better Body Mass Index). 🙂 https://tall.life/better-bmi-for-short-and-tall-people/ Mine is 23, which seems about right.

  • My instinct is that a simple waist measurement around the naval is a better indicator than BMI, and almost as easy.

  • Agreed, and it’s super convenient too, based on only height and weight. I’d argue that it’s derived from population but is applied on a personal level. My BMI is in the overweight category which implies a certain level of risk. I’ll bring it back around to my original point though which is that BF and even waist size are…

  • You shifted the goal posts there by talking about the obese class ;). There’s another whole class between that and the normal, healthy range. I just did a Google search and it seems well know that BMI isn’t consistent across a range of heights. For example, I’m 6’4, BF 16%, waist 35”, unexceptional muscle, and just in the…

  • I suspect that people’s issue with BMI is that there are better metrics? Like BF%, waist size or waist to hip ratio. It’s a nicely statistically correlated risk factor for weight related health issues. But there is plenty that it doesn’t capture, as others have said, such as frame size or muscle.

  • I’ve found the same thing too having recently started my first MFP-tracked cut. When on a lean bulk, I could fairly easily get 60g fibre a day (55/25/20 carb/protein/fat with 3100 calories)). Now I’m cutting (40/40/20 with 2500 calories) I seem to hover around 20g fibre today. Swapping out porridge has made the biggest…
  • To throw in a counter view... not that I particularly disagree with KayakerJoe... Resistance training is subject to the laws of diminishing returns and (to make up some numbers that are from memory roughly in the ballpark), 1x sets will get you 70% of the gains of 3x sets, and 2x about 90%. Here’s a link that includes…
  • Just the other side of the moor! Hi there
  • Hello All, Ilkley, Yorkshire here. Early 40s and trying to lose the Dad bod and build some muscle while I still can. Dave
  • How would people define “real lean”? 10%?
  • I’m from Yorkshire, UK
  • I’m in a similar position to you. I recently lost weight and found MFP and this forum having decided to build some muscle. I’m 6’4 and 203lbs. I believe my body fat is about 17%. I’ve come to realise that is probably on the high side to be trying to gain. A “recomp” or slight deficit would be more appropriate for me. I…
  • Here’s latest. I think in the 16-18% body fat range. I calculated 17% today with Jackson Pollark 3-point. I think I need to reduce calories slightly as i may be gaining a bit more fat than I’d like, but it feels too early to say.
  • Here’s my low weight point and a few weeks into the strength training program. Take the image on the right with a pinch of salt. It involved a strategically placed light and something of a contortion. Still, I’m pretty pleased with progress.
  • Seems strange to be posting semi-clothed pictures on a public forum but hey ho, let’s go for it. Here’s near my starting point and a couple of months into the weight loss phase. My weight was about 103kg (16st 2lbs) at the start in September and a waist of 40.5 inches. I got ill in November (COVID-like but apparently not)…
  • I’m doing the Bigger Leaner Stronger 4-day plan. I also have one PT session a week where we tend to focus on upper body (trainer has a lockup with some equipment at the park) and I go for a short run on a Sunday. BLS 4-day program focuses on different areas each day on a weekly cycle: (1) Push and core; (2) Pull and…
