  • Low carb/keto means so many things. If you stay away from the processed stuff (Atkins bars and other supposedly 'low carb'stuff) the way of eating is pretty healthy. I don't know exactly how it leads to weight-loss. It probably does reduce your calorie in-take because it is harder to overeat foods you have to buy fresh and…
  • I love your recipes! Since I cook for the family, I usually eat whatever they are having and subtract the rice/potato/pasta/bread/wrap parts. If the plate looks empty, I add a bit of veg - or 'cauli rice' or low carb noodles. I like the 'seriously low carb' bread rolls on occasion. (They hold a burger or bacon most…
  • Not keto but low carb here. (I eat veg carbs and might be adding occasional pulses/wholegrains for gut health.) I've been following a low carb lifestyle for some years (was 225lb at the start) and have about another 30lb to lose. It is my 'real' eating now. When I go back to old eating habits for too long, weight goes up -…
  • Yesterday : LCHF meals :) <3 Hiking 1hr+ :) Rowing not done yet :/
  • Yesterday was a good day: exercise goal - hiking 1hr :) eating - low carb high fat - fresh as possible for 3 meals :) Drinking plenty of water :) An extra positive: Avoided an offered cocktail :) (which apparently was for using up left-over Christmas ingredients). Planning for the days ahead (adapting to virus-caused…
  • Thank-you Baconslave - Happy new year to you and all on here. I love the plans above. Reading them is exciting - and inspiring. I'm looking forwards to getting back to normal (and to feeling slimmer again) but I already feel good about the months ahead . I'm wishing the same happiness to all of you. Why do I feel ok when I…
  • So glad you were tested cyaneverfat! It probably doesn't feel like it, but you really are one of the lucky ones. This kind of diabetes is so silently deadly. Having caught it early you have a good chance of avoiding some really nasty (life-changing) consequences. As I said - just suddenly losing your sight is only one of…
  • Well done for tackling this cyaneverfat. Avoiding the truely horrible complications is well worth a blood test (and the un-nerving wait for results). I have all fingers crossed for you and hope that you are clear and safe. However, even if you are not, outcomes are good for people who act!
  • drmwc I share your experience with refined sugar. Giving it up was hard but it has stopped being an issue. On the odd occasions I've had it - I do have to accept that I'll be extra 'hungry' for a few days afterwards. Staying away from sugar for those days gets rid of the desire for it.
  • cyaneverfat - I am so glad that you are getting checked out. Whatever the result - you are in a position to change things.
  • cyaneverfat - please do go and get checked out if you have 'all the symptoms'. I don't want to scare you but not doing so (because you are frightened or because you will soon lose weight and be ok or because you don't think it is all that serious and you only have 'a light dose' of diabetes) could be very very bad for you.…
  • I have found that a happy side-effect of changing the way I eat (low carb anti-diabetes) is that my 'need' for treats (a very real part of my day previously) has vanished. I eat them occasionally just like the normal :) people around me ... not because I've had a will-power implant but because I really don't desire sweet…
  • cyaneverfat - if you have 'most of the symptoms' , have you been tested recently? Diabetes is often without symptoms until quite late on. If you have symptoms you might need medication even while you lose weight (and improve things this way). It quietly damages your body - so dealing with it early is a really good idea.
  • I agree - 'keto' (or just high-fat-low-carb) works for some people. It isn't a magic fix for everyone. I certainly didn't expect it to work for me because of my passion for all things carby (I could eat sugar on meringue!) . It turns out that the 'passion' was actually caused by eating carbs. Some people can moderate (eat…
  • I'm in the UK and have found KETO KITCHEN by Monya Kilian really useful. (With other cookbooks I've found that the American ingredients are not always easy to source and measurements differ a bit too) Nigella's recipes are often pretty low carb (even with cakes sometimes- she does an apple and almond one without wheat…
  • Well done so far. Don't worry - be positive - go to him full of exciting plans that don't involve too many calories. Really of course, he wants to be with you and enjoy your company and your happiness. He is looking at things you used to do - by default- not because they are the best. Think about it - they probably aren't…
  • There are many ways to lose weight... which is lucky because many of us need to do this and we are often very different. There is no magic but there will be a way that works best for you and which you can stick to. I am a low-carber now because that works well for me. As is argued above, one reason it works might well be…
  • I'm glad you are having success with it OP. It wouldn't be for me because I couldn't sustain it long-term and losing weight just to put it back on again as soon as I go back to 'normal eating' is no way to live. I need to be eating normally in a way that leads me to the right weight... and then to keep on keeping on…
  • Drink more water. I've found that drinking more of it ensures I leave my desk and walk about much more often. :)
  • -break into florets, -toss these in a mix of oilve oil and curry spices and crushed garlic -roast in hot oven until crispy So tasty!
  • I'm a moderator too but fear that I might need to exclude as I get closer to my target. Progress is slower and slower. Then again, I've not intention of giving up wine forever and don't want to suddenly put weight back on as soon as I get to target and have that dangerous feeling that I can go back to eating 'normally'. In…
  • New challenge for me: To work out how to use the 'hoola-hoop' that is leaning dustily against my bookcase and make it more than just a puzzling back-drop for online-meetings :)
  • We have had a difficult few months - so should not be too critical of ourselves but I agree that is it good to take stock and make better plans for the future now. (It is all too easy to let the trials of lockdown and the fear of this virus create even worse health problems. Covid-19 MIGHT be a hazard to any one of us...…
  • What have I lost along with some excess weight: 1/A lot of aches and pains that I'd put down to age. 2/A layer of sensitivity to other people's opinions :) 3/A wardrobe of mixed size clothes. If I regain the weight, I'll have to become a nudist!
  • (Lots of leafy veg -the carbs that make this 'low carb' not 'no carb' and plenty of water remove the fibre problem :) )
  • You don't need to count carbs or calories to lose. Eat good high-fat-low-carb foods for your meals. Drink LOTS of water. Eat to appetite (fats are great for leaving your satisfied) but don't allow yourself to eat for comfort or out of boredom. It is possible to overeat and fail to lose if you do these last two things.…
  • Crystalsan726 -congratulations on all your growning-up babies and Sarah and Shauna - all the best for your weight loss too. This is a good place to come.
  • I agree - don't feel guilty! (No-one died and it is just a single blip in your overall progress.) It is good to look back (with compassion for yourself) at why it happened and to consider if you need to make adjustments so that you are not always relying on the grim-grip of will-power. There is a limit to how long you can…
  • Try it and see. It will be great if it works for you too.
