  • It depends on what you want I guess. I am not massively building muscle or anything but I tend to do compound / free weights / machines through the year just to keep things interesting if nothing else! I found a lot of positives to all areas of workouts once I had a personal trainer for two months - she showed me the…
  • Yoga is good for improving movement, and that's always a good thing. I'm sure some calories are burnt doing yoga but other commenters are correct, its calorie deficit and other exercise that's needed to lose weigh, yoga on its own wont do it. I did yoga on its own for a while and I noticed no drop in weight. I only noticed…
  • I have to be honest - I've never seen the appeal, or logic, with Slim fast or similar things. I've always thought "why would I drink 220 calories as a meal, when I'm not in a rush, and I could have, say, hummus vegetables dips and an apple". Protein supplements I get, but that's for building muscle. But if it works for you…
  • It depends. I tend to be a bit rough in my calculations, but if my weight goes beyond the margins of movement I've set myself (7lb max increase, 4lb max decrease - this is just my own parameters nothing scientific about it), then I watch my calorie intake to get within the tolerances I've set myself. So in short yes, and…
  • Agree with all other comments. I do use a gym but when I started I was self conscious about my weight (I learned later I shouldn't have been but that's another story), so I started with, just moving. I decided that in my 40 minute break in work I'd use 10 minutes, every day, and walk. That was the start and I built on that…
  • I did it the other way around a few years back - Scotland to Canada. I didn't even think about what I was eating or exercise (but we tend to do a lot of walking, but I didn't log it as I would back home). Sure I put on a couple of pounds, but then it all came back off as soon as I got back to my usual routine. Just go and…
  • Yeah, as CarlsbergLewis says - chill. firstly I find that I put weigh on when i've been on holiday (no surprise there!) then when I'm back home I start losing the weight again once I go back to "normal" eating. You'll probably find most of the weight gain will disappear with that once you get back on the wagon.
  • At the moment overnight oats, with grated apple, raisins and cinnamon - yum! really easy to make and ready to grab and go in the morning.
  • Head to the help section and if you can see what your looking for that'll answer your question message MFP they are pretty quick in getting back with an answer.
  • Yeah I totally agree. I always put on some weight on holidays, I now just accept that as I've found that when I'm back home, and back to my routines, the weight goes back to what it was before. Holidays are for enjoying the "break from the normal", ok I do more activity holidays but the principle is still the same - just…
  • No, not unless you count getting clothes altered, or buying new clothes as the ones I had were way too big :-) But I don't knock it! If that's a way someone rewards themselves for achieving something really important go for it! You deserve it!
  • As others have said - Its the Daily Mail enough said. It, along with that other joke paper "The Sun" wouldn't know a fact if it came up and slapped them across the face. Check somewhere else and see if this is the case - you'll not get anyting useful from The Daily Mail.
  • 1200 seems awfully low for a daily intake - was that on medical advice? I am not too far off your height 5ft 7 and weighed 16 and a half stone at my worse and I stuck to a 2200 cal a day plus exercise. I tended to lose 1 - 1 & a half lb a week but some weeks I gained. It happens, and its a bit of a downer especially at the…
  • Hi there! If you're going to post what your doing everyday you're best to do that on your home page. The message boards are really about specific topics and the home page is a way to share your day and get ongoing feedback as threads can get lost and people don't see them. A home page post can get reactions from friends…
  • No one is a piece of crap because they are finding things though going. You have the support of others on here and I see others have already given excellent advice. It took me years to get to where I am now. But I took every set back (note - not failure - set back!) and tried to learn from it. Ok sometimes I was down on…
  • Well, if it works for you...I gave up on these types of diets years ago and I lost weight and got a healthy lifestyle the old fashioned way - eat at a calorie deficit and exercise. I am now trying to build my strength, and I'm basing that on legit info and not Bro Science. With the exception of one or two people the old…
  • Ready made meals as an occasional thing is ok but I'd agree with others don't give up on cooking from scratch. For a start your getting the full nutrition, I am highly doubtful that ready made meals retain all the nutrients home cooking does. Secondly its an expensive way to eat.
  • Thanks eeejer this site is straight forward to use and very informative!
  • While there is some debate on the impact of genetics on weight loss your friends statement is basically an excuse. I cant remember who said this but I think its true "I find people that say the can, or cannot, achieve something are usually right". In other words if you decide you're gonna fail before you start, guess what?…
  • Three weeks aint that long so I wouldn't be worried. But I'd take on board the good advice others have gave on this thread. I was at not a too dissimilar weight to you when I started (232lb) and I started slowly and then I started cardio / going to the gym 4 times a week I lost about 1lb a week. Be in it for the long haul…
  • I agree with Glassy, also this is all about the long run. over the time I've been eating healthy my weight fluctuates - sometimes I'll put on a lb. or two, then it comes off again. tbh I know why as I keep logging and I weigh myself once, and only once, a week on the same day and time. Don't get disheartened - we all hit…
  • Hi there and welcome! I'm from Scotland feel free to add me :-)
  • You'd be surprised at the amount of food that contains protein. There's the "protein myth" to consider as well - a lot of time we have too much. I'm a vegetarian (a proper one - I don't eat fish) and I know my "go to" foods for good sources of protein: Beans, lentils, cottager cheese, tofu, etc. I also use protein shakes…
  • Firstly well done! You have done really well and you should be proud of yourself. On the "gains" it could be muscle, but if you have gained 5lb I'd not worry - I have been on maintenance for nearly two years now and I allow myself a + or - 5lb "wiggle room", so I think your doing just fine. At the end of the day it up to…
  • Best thing I did was invest in a personal trainer. Ok its not cheap but if you only do it for a short while they will give you good advice on nutrition and proper form. And before you ask - no I'm not a trainer I'm just like you I wanted to get stronger.
  • I started lifting about just under a year ago and I'm still getting my head around the squat rack! Feel free to add me :-)
  • Arran Blonde beer! from an island off the West Coast of Scotland, utterly lovely!
  • I cant argue with that...at least I think I cant :-)
  • TBH, if you are dealing with a load of stress the best thing is to focus on the stress first then "get back on the wagon" - whatever that means. I look at photos of myself at my heaviest and I realise it was partly down to the huge amount of stress I had in my life at that time. Once I worked through it all (and I mean…
