My chocolate meringues came out flat!
I was using the recipe out of Moosewood cookbook and I suspect I know what to do for next time. The recipe calls for pulsing icing sugar, cocoa powder, and nuts in the food processor and adding them to egg whites beaten with vanilla until they form stiff peaks, then folding in chocolate chips. Note the absence of cream of…

Anyone Going to Toronto Fan Expo Doing the Superpower 5K?
I signed up yesterday. I'm planning to walk it. If anyone wants to join me, maybe we could walk together? http://www.superpower5k.com/Default.asp?utm_source=FAN+EXPO+Fan+News&utm_campaign=827b5028a1-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_02_02&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_0c3dfa895f-827b5028a1-229108037&id=home&l=1

Suggestions for seasoning roasted butternut squash noodles?
I've got a well-stocked dried spice cabinet and a limited potential for fresh herbs at the corner grocery. My main is going to be tofu in a tamarind-infused barbecue sauce (other ingredients off the top of my head include fresh tomatoes, Dijon mustard, brown sugar, molasses, smoked paprika, garlic, shallots, ketchup and…

Help me come up with exercise recommendations for my mom?
My mother is finally ready to take my advice and try strength training. She's debating asking her doctor for a referral to a physiotherapist, but it can sometimes take months for (non-emergency) appointments. And, to be honest, I'm not sure whether she'll actually make that appointment. She's the sort of person who can be…

Broccoli fights cancer?
So, I went for a cystoscopy this week and found out that I have some new lesions in my bladder. To be clear, this is noninvasive papillary urothelial carcinoma (92-93% of the time, doesn't spread; 98% survival rate, oncologist even called it an 'inconvenience', rather than a cause for alarm). So, I'm facing another minor…

How many grams to a cup of stone ground grits (raw)?
My google-fu is failing me. Cornmeal seems to come in at 150-170 grams on the sites I've been checking out, though I'm not sure if that's exactly the same thing. Help?

Exercising after a TURBT
FYI: My uro-oncologist has referred me to a hospital dietician; I'm waiting for an appointment. I'm just looking for ideas of what to do between now and then. A week and a half ago, I had a TURBT (trans-urethral resection of bladder tumor) to get rid of some malignant lesions. I feel fine, now but I'm under medical…

If I do a full-body light dumbbell workout three days a week...
Is it okay to do a 30-minute cardio-and-weights interval workout on the off days? Or would any sort of strength work impede muscle recovery? To clarify, this isn't anywhere close to HIIT-level intensity. I'd likely be using 8lb and 10lb dumbbells for now, just as I do with the full-body workout.

Writing a novel with a 14-year-old protagonist. Looking for age-appropriate strength-training
Like the thread title says. Context: It's speculative fiction. Basically our world, but including costumed heroes with or without superpowers. My main character is attending a school that exists for two purposes: 1) Train teenagers who are/plan to become costumed heroes 2) Train teenagers whose lives and safety are…

Just went to doctor for check-up
The last time he took my weight and BP, was 6 months ago. I started MFP on October 30th. I think I just blew his mind... My BP has gone from 130/90 to 125/85. And according to his scale (which I won't count as a weigh-in, because I know readings can vary slightly from scale to scale, my weekly weigh-in is Sunday morning…

Coulis calorie curiosity
At the end of the day, I know this is majoring in the minors, but I guess I'm curious in case one day I'm dealing with a variation with higher-calorie vegetables than tomatoes and bell peppers. So, this sauce calls for three yellow tomatoes and two yellow peppers (no issue, tossed everything on the scale, business as…

Meeting an RD for the first time on August 14th
I'm not really sure what to expect or what to ask. I think I'm probably going to bring in some pages from my MFP food diary, but beyond that? Any suggestions? ETA: Also, hanging out in these forums has been great for helping me separate the 'woo' from the 'wow', but I'm curious as to what some obvious red flags might be. I…

Any Hapkido-ists here? Looking for help with a novel I'm writing
Just a few details. 1) When I took judo, we learned to address our instructor as 'Sensei'. My research so far tells me that in Korean, the word would be Sabumnim, whether the instructor is male or female. Is this correct? Not just the word, but is this how a student would address their teacher directly? If it makes a…

Stepping up light dumbbell workouts: More reps or heavier weights?
I'm currently doing a full-body strength workout from Joan Pagano's "Strength Training: Exercises for Women" book. Most of her exercise recommendations look something like this example: Level 1: 10 reps, 3-lb weights, 1-2 sets Level 2: 12-15 reps, 5 to 8-lb weights, 1-2 sets Level 3: 8-12 reps, 10 to 12-lb weights, 1-3…

Breathing correctly during reps
Well, I always knew I had hand-eye coordination trouble, but now it seems I have 'lung-muscle' coordination trouble, too. In other words, when I'm doing squats or dumbbell lifts, whenever the instructions tell me to inhale, I seem to naturally exhale and vice versa. Is there any reason that I should be concerned? As in,…

How much is too much?
I've been using a Gazelle Edge fitness glider I got several years ago as a gift. In about 4 months, I've worked my way from 25-minute workouts to 50 and I'm using it 4 or 5 days a week. How much cardio (with this machine) can/should I do before I need to worry about overdoing? So far, I'm not feeling any pain or strain…

Is there a way to incorporate one of your recipes in another?
Example: I make my own seitan. If its calories differ from those of the seitan(s) already in the database and I don't want to add my own recipe to the database, is there any way to take 1 serving of "my" seitan and use it as an ingredient in a chili? (I can put the chili into the tracker minus the seitan and track the…

One Reason I make more lower calorie desserts...
When I absolutely must lick the spoon and scrape the leftovers from my mixing bowl, the calorie cost is wayyyyyyyyyyyy less when it's a 95-calorie/serving strawberry sorbet, vs decadent chocolate. (Not that I don't make some high-calorie treats from time to time, but today wasn't one of those times!)

Tracking Calories Burned with Resistance Bands
Apologies if this has been asked recently. Up to now, I've mostly been concentrating on eating at a deficit and cardio. I'm 44, female, 5'3" and 221 lbs (down from 254) with a goal weight of around 140, give or take. (I plan to discuss with my doctor as I get closer to that goal, since 140 is around the upper limit for my…

Been here for a few months, but just now getting into the forums!
Hi, all! I'm down 25 lbs since I started back on Oct 30th. Got about another 89 to go, but MFP is working for me! I'm kosher and vegetarian, living in Toronto. In September I contracted cellulitus, which led to lymphedema, which led to months of homecare nurses coming to change dressings on my calf for a wound which would…

Shirataki Noodle Swap
I'm trying to figure out how many bags of shirataki noodles I would need to swap for a recipe that calls for 12 oz of uncooked noodles. (I always get stuck with figuring out how many cups cooked pasta one gets from X amount of dry.) If it makes a difference, the original recipe calls for Asian rice stick noodles. The…

Shirataki Noodle Swap
I have a recipe that calls for 8 oz of dan myung or bean-thread noodles, dried. Does anyone know how many packages of shirataki noodles I should use instead?
