  • Sometimes continuing how one has eaten before the diet is unhealthy - not all overweight people have been getting enough of certain micros, or protein. Dieting can lead to changes in eating that will result in better health, more energy, easier gains etc. Also, some people are triggered into binges, or end up eating more…
  • The point of weight loss for me is to be heathier (I started out morbidly obese). There would be no point in continuing to eat in a way that is unbalanced, or that creates cravings that would make it hard for me to stick to my calorie goals. Along the way I'm learning about healthier eating. Dieting is learning good habits…
  • Congrats on how you are doing so far. You may not need to get as much intensity in your workouts to see progress. Some of my workouts make me see stars, but I have yet to vomit, and have lost almost 110 lbs (20 before MFP). It takes time to build muscle, but it is worth the time. I get frustrated with myself, and tired,…
  • This is what I found helped diminish my cravings:* Reducing added sugars in my diet * Making sure I get enough protein (.8g/kg of body weight) * Getting enough fiber (minimum 25g/day or 15g per 1000 maintenance calories) * Always have protein with carbs (never have carbs on their own) * Eating at regular times * Vigorous…
  • Water is actually more essential than food. I would die after only a few days without water. With water, I could live for a month or more, before dying of micronutrient (not energy) deficiency. The body needs micronutrients and water at least as much as it needs energy, if not more.
  • As I said, protein, fat, and micronutrients. Food provides more than energy.
  • Food does provide energy (except for soluble fiber, and water, if you consider water food), however it provides more than energy.
  • Your body uses protein and to build muscles, enzymes for digesting, and hormones regulate many systems (i.e. brain chemistry). When fat and protein is oxidized or turned into glucose (used for energy) it can no longer be used to make things like muscles, enzymes, and hormones. Some of the fat and most of the protein you…
  • If I didn't eat for a month, I would die, but not from loss of energy. My body would still have plenty of fat (energy) on it. Long before I ran out of fat I would suffer from a lack of potassium, leading to heartbeat irregularities and death. We need more than energy to be healthy. If food is only energy that means -*…
  • On mixing starches and proteins - there is no evidence that this is hard on the digestive system. Some very healthy foods come naturally with carbohydrates and proteins mixed (i.e. beans). Those with diabetes should always pair carbohydrates with proteins, as the protein slows digestion, preventing blood glucose spikes.…
  • You are doing amazing for protein. That was one of my problems. Weight loss for the first week/s is often more dramatic than what you get in the weeks that follow, due to water weight loss and your metabolism slowing down with weight loss. I think your original target calories might have been too low. Some peope use this…
  • I find I end up biting my tongue sometimes. I told my daughter I had pulled a pomegranate apart, and the seeds were in the fridge if she wanted some. I measured out 100 grams for my snack, and had a few. As I walk into the living room, she says "Oh, cool" and grabs a handful out of my cup. I have no way of knowing the…
  • I don't think exercise is a waste of time if I'm eating junk. I've tended to lose weight without trying every time I've been active in my life. Exercise can help diminish appetite, and change preferences to less calorie dense foods. But then, when I have exercise gains, it makes me more likely to want to eat healthy,…
  • Only worry about the sugar if it is an issue for you personally. Some people chose to change out what is in their journal screen to a nutrient they are more interested in, like fiber, or iron.
  • You can use a step counter to keep track of how active you are just living your life. 10,000 steps in a day can work out to 500 calories burned/day from activity. That's 1 pound/week lost. You may be more active than you think. Good luc :)
  • Some would chose to log this so they could eat a few extra calories on donation day and not have MFP give them red numbers for their calorie totals. The plasma from the blood donation is regenerated in about two days and burns about 400 calories. This rapid regeneration is why plasma/platelet donors can donate so often. I…
  • Wendy's small chili with garden salad, or Wendy's Apple Pecan salad (I get mine without cheese or dressing). McDonalds Fruit & yogurt parfait for breakfast. Grilled chicken breast and corn-on-the-cob at Kentucky Fried Chicken isn't too bad. Holiday Inn Expresses have gyms, and sometimes pools, but I wouldn't say they are…
  • Make sure you are getting enough protein. MFP recommendation may be too low. Try for .8 g/kg of body weight. Some people are more satisfied if they include protein in every meal and snack. Make sure to include enough fiber. This can help with satisfaction. Beans are high fiber, as are green leafy vegetables, among others.…
  • You restrict dietary intake and lose fat%. Then calorie restrictions are relaxed and fat is regained. Recompers probably yoyo more than any other diet group combined.
  • I've lost over 105 pounds, in part, by reducing added sugars, and avoiding things like peanut butter cups. There is no one right way to weight loss. Insulting people does not give them concrete information that will help them. You may want to try using "I" statements like "I found this worked for me..." The use of…
  • Saying someone has no self control is an insult, and not appropriate on the forums. I, for one, think the OP has shown considerable self control by not responding to insults with insults in kind. It seems to me that those who respond to evidence-based arguments with insults are the ones with self-control issues.
  • Please disagree with my point of view, and provide evidence. Please do not insult others. Insulting people shuts down rational dialogue.
  • 1 - I eat 1200 calories a day, and have either pasta or rice every day. 1/2 cup rice or 21g dry pasta. I rely on my protein to keep me full 2 - I have room for two snacks a day, but I replace one with a treat if something special comes up (i.e. my daughter made cupcakes). I would like to say I keep treats down to a couple…
  • Eat your planned meals and bear with the hunger for a while. Journal about what is bothering you, and let yourself cry over any outstanding issues (or horomones). You know how to make this work. Tolerate the discomfort, and your body will adjust within a few days to the lower calorie level. Good luck :)
  • If you have no joint troubles, vigorous exercise can help blunt hunger. I've been jogging, and using 30 Day Shred as an interval program. I'm generally not that hungry, but if I've been really active (earned over 1000 calories in exercise that day), I eat an extra 200 calories to bring me up to 1400. Hunger was the worst…
  • Lost 105 pounds with Mirena in. I've not been happy with my midsection, but working through 30 Day Shred is helping. :)
  • I've been losing 3-4 pounds a week since July. I'm at 191 now (and just stopped being obese) so I expect it to slow down. MFP says that at 1200 calories I'll lose 1.6 lbs/wk. I'm able to stay under 1200 calories a day most week days without feeling miserable and bummed about it, even in weeks when I lose less (like right…
  • Greek yogurt tastes more luxurious to me. I mix it with my chocolate protein powder. The taste reminds me a little of cheesecake.
  • According to Wikipedia: "Regardless of the type of fiber, the body absorbs less than 17 kJ/g (4.1 kcal/g), which can create inconsistencies for actual product nutrition labels. In some countries fiber is not listed on nutrition labels and is considered to provide no energy. In other countries all fiber must be listed and…
  • Calories still exist whether or not we can metabolize them. Insoluble fiber has calories just like any other carb, 4 per 1 gram. Calories are a unit of energy, not just units of energy that can be metabolized by humans. I just checked the stats for my salad. 6 g carbs (incl. 3 g fiber), 2 g fat and 2 g protein = 50 total…
