  • I like to add berries. Whatever I have on hand at the time (blueberries, strawberries, blackberries etc). I also add a half a banana if I want extra sweetness. Chopped Walnuts are also very tasty. A splash of milk helps make it not so gummy/thick after its been cooked.
  • Pretty much, yes. I'm all for treating (some) conditions "naturally" but after a reasonable amount of time, or severity warrants it, I'm all for going to the doctor/medical professional. Case in point: a few years ago I got a case of strep throat. Happened on the weekend so I couldn't get to the doctor until Monday. In the…
  • I think for some people (not all) they turn to holistic medicine when western medicine fails to cure them (some refuse western medicine all together from the beginning). They may have tried the western medicine approach with no success, and out of desperation/lack of alternatives they try the holistic approach. I'm not one…
  • Thank you both for explaining. You both explained what I was trying to say much better than I did.
  • I think I might have mis-understood the way in which "holistic approach" is being used. When I said a holistic approach could be used to restore gut flora, I meant exactly what you described (eating yogurt, fermented foods, probiotics etc). Isn't that considered a holistic approach (seriously asking)?
  • I suppose I fall somewhere in the middle as to holistic being able to treat disorders. There are some disorders/illnesses that should be treated with medications/antibiotics. Strep throat for example. Could this be treated holistically? I'm sure it could and has been, but having that holistic remedy fail can lead to…
  • You are really hilarious...really. Scientist, universities etc are still doing research on aspartame and artificial sweetners. Have they come to any conclusive evidence? No. But there is enough doubt that they continue to study it. That is why every month or so there is a news story on it...because some people still care…
  • This is my point. Posts like this one that flat out say it is not harmful. The OP wasn't asking for a debate on diet soda. She was asking for tips on how to approach the issue with her aunt. Obviously she feels there is a reason to limit the amount of diet soda, as does her aunt. She has her own set of opinions on the…
  • Also, diet can certainly play a roll in an overgrowth of candida. Yeast feeds on sugar so eating a lot of sugar when you have an infection certainly won't help anything. Limiting sugar intake when you have this problem can only aid in fixing it. As well as eating a diet high in good bacteria (yogurt, fermented foods etc)
  • You did say "candida overgrowth is a fake illness". So I guess I'm confused as to why you say you never said that? I guess technically it is an infection and not illness, but that's just getting into semantics. Candida is an 'overgrowth' of fungus on the skin, mucus membranes, mouth etc....so call me confused.
  • My point to posting the link was to simply show that the debate on Diet Soda still exists (whether you want to believe that or not...many people still question it). It is not a closed case. That is all I was trying to show. I'm not trying to prove it's harmful...I'm not trying to prove its safe...I'm just showing that it…
  • I didn't write the article, so no, I don't have citations. Maybe I could email the author. And I believe this threads title is "Diet soda", not "aspartame." I've given my opinion on aspartame...The point of this post was to show that it can't be proven that it is "perfectly safe" and "not harmful." Again, I'm not saying it…
  • So you're saying candida overgrowth of any kind is a fake illness? What about oral thrush? You're saying that is fake? You can actually see that with your own eyes, so how can you tell me that is fake?
  • Once again, you can not guarantee that diet soda "does none of that." Nothing is guaranteed. Yes this link I'm posting is not "scientific enough", but I'm proving that the jury is still out on the safety of diet/regular soda (or any food/drink that has caramel color) based on the ingredients in it. Obviously there is still…
  • Ok. Whatever you say. Not to mention that is caffeine is a mild diuretic and the carbonation slows the absorption time. Electolites and salts are good to replace, but soda is not the way to do it. But you do you.
  • You are really claiming that soda (diet or regular) is better for rehydration than water after a long run? Where in the world did you come up with this?
  • Thank you Aaron for explaining the abbreviations/Latin and further about the rat types. I do find it interesting and helpful.
  • Are you asking for favorite restaurants in general?...or are you looking for 'healthy' meals at restaurants? If you're asking about favorites in general I'd say a good BBQ place with a good pulled pork sandwich. There are some really good BBQ places around my city. OR a true authentic mexican restaurant for tacos or a…
  • Makes sense....most of it anyway. I admit some of the specialized scientific lingo etc is a little beyond me, but I definitely get the gist of it. Thanks for taking the time to explain it to me. I appreciate it.
  • Sugar is sugar...that is true, but the amount of sugar in homemade bread is minimal. Maybe 1 tsp in an entire loaf vs 2-4 (average) for 1 serving of store bought. Depending on the bread and/yeast used, sugar might not even be necessary. Some store bought breads have more, some may have less, or they use HFCS in place of…
  • I'm asking this in complete seriousness...from what I've read in these forums, testing chemicals, compounds, drugs etc on mice is irrelevant because the dosage is much higher than in a human due to size ratio. I've posted studies where chemicals get tested on mice and I'm told it's irrelevant due to this very reason. Can…
  • I did no added sugar for 30 days...it was tough because there is added sugar in pretty much everything in the grocery store other than fresh produce. I agree with other posters...you have to learn to cook for yourself. For pasta sauce I use a couple cans of diced tomatoes, dice an onion, add some spices (oregano, basil,…
  • I couldn't have said it better myself. Very well said. Studies are still being done and we won't know what effects these chemicals are having on our bodies until years down the line. For some there may be no effect, for others it could cause harm. Everybody is different. Some people smoke their whole lives and never get…
  • Someone still is. Just the other day on the news there was a story about artificial sweeteners possibly causing weight gain. They simply said scientists. So whether or not you want to believe that there is still a debate going on...there obviously still is by some people enough to make the news.
  • Should you drink it? That's completely up to you. People say they drink it and still lose weight. Is it healthy? That is a very controversial topic. There are threads on MFP that have the debate over health. Some say it's (artificial sweeteners) safe, others (myself included) think that it's not. What you need to do is…
  • It's pretty simple really. You go out with friends and either limit yourself to 1 drink, or don't drink at all. It's not that difficult. I never truly understood why people "have" to drink to have fun. Don't get me wrong, I've gone out with friends and had drinks...but if I'm trying to better myself and lose weight etc, it…
  • I will have to try the chicken chili recipe...sounds very tasty. Right now I have 15 episodes saved on my dvr...I always watch one when in need of a little cooking inspiration.
  • I had tibial stress fractures in high school during 2 of my track seasons. Went to the doc who did xrays. Told me I had to stop running or risk a compound fracture. He gave me an air cast and I couldn't run for awhile. I would either go to the doc, or just lay off the running for awhile until the pain goes away. Ice can…
  • America's test kitchen has great recipes. Everything I've made from their site is so good. The beef stirfry is so good (and pretty healthy too)! They also have a cooking show on tv called Cooks Country. It's usually on PBS.
  • Skinnytaste.com has some really good, easy recipes. There are lots of crock pot recipes so you can have a nice meal when you come home from work. The crock pot taco chili is great.
