  • Thanks for all the responses! Both conversations were between only myself and the other person, and in both, they were the ones who brought up the subject. One conversation was much briefer than the other, so it was fully just relating to each other. The other conversation went a bit further, but because I prefer not to…
  • @megemrj Yeah, we mostly just have our earbuds in. We used to sometimes have only one in so we could talk, but it works out well. We can communicate well enough at the gym without talking.
  • My husband and I work out together. We do the same lifting routine, taking turns, and then we usually split up after that to do cardio or stretching or whatever.
  • I think rating my hunger is a helpful part of the paper tracking, something I don't do when I log directly in the app. It helps me pay more attention. I can relate to that! Overeating usually starts in my brain long before it actually happens. No guilt here either. Just a sort of loss of a sense of how much I actually need…
  • Thanks! I'll look into the set-up and the breathing. I think I do hold my breath (not intentionally) and just breathe between reps.. on back squats too. I've read that this isn't unusual or necessarily a bad thing, but I'll read some more about it.
  • Here are my latest attempts. I didn't have the hubby there to take the video, so it's not exactly the same angle. I got my new weightlifting shoes. I focused on turning my feet out a bit more, engaging my core, and keeping my elbows up - which felt easier since I changed my grip a bit. I'm also trying to look forward, not…
  • Aren't races, by nature, competitive? Maybe find another way you can run with others without that competitive aspect. Maybe get competitive with yourself on something other than time, like how much you can enjoy the race. Sounds like that might be more of a challenge for you to run in a way that's enjoyable than to run…
  • I do cardio and stretching in the morning and lift after work. I second the advice to split cardio and resistance training. I do cardio first because it wakes me up and because I enjoy it less than lifting. It's easier for me to go in the evening if I know I'm going to lift. On the other hand, if I end up skipping the gym…
  • When I used to work in a place where I couldn't avoid the break room and where there was often food in there, I would check with myself to see if I really wanted it, if I'd seek it out and buy it or make it for myself. If not, then I realized I was just contemplating eating it because it was there, not because I really…
  • Thanks y'all :) I really appreciate the input. I'm hoping my lifting shoes will be coming in the mail today, so hopefully that will help a bit. I definitely noticed the foot adjustment too now that y'all pointed it out. I'm going to keep this all in mind when I try again. We actually asked someone knowledgeable at the gym…
  • This is an awesome discussion. I wish I had something especially meaningful to contribute, but I don't think I do. Here it is anyway though! I think if it's a contest between food and activity, food is the bigger culprit. Of course activity is so important, but as has been mentioned, it's entirely possible to be active and…
  • What I've been reading is that this man had a history of domestic violence prior to this marriage and that she didn't take his threats seriously. Unless she felt like she was in real danger, why would she have said anything? Was she supposed to inform the people at every place her ex-husband knew she regularly frequented?…
  • Thanks! Regarding body composition analysis, I understand it's not totally accurate, but I figure even if it's not exact it's a fairly good measure of progress if I'm using the same method every time.
  • I didn't do it that way though! It was more like periodic binges than slow, sensible overeating.
  • Thanks guys! Y'all just made my day! I wish I had bulked intentionally and enjoyed it, but I was struggling trying to get my eating under control the whole time and feeling badly that I was unable to. I wanted to get leaner before I tried to put on some muscle. I also felt like I was being really inconsistent with lifting,…
  • Don't tell yourself you'll see how you feel in the morning. You have to commit. Don't negotiate once the alarm goes off in the morning. You just have to go through the motions, as others have said. Putting your alarm far away from your bed is also a good idea unless you sleep through it.
  • Are you on a treadmill or outside? It took me a long time to realize that I had no sense of pace outside, so I would always run faster and get burnt out sooner than if I'd been pacing myself.
  • When I started swimming again, I had to stop every length of the pool. I don't know if it was purely lack of endurance or also not having a good breathing rhythm while swimming. I just tried to go at slow times when the pool was fairly empty and tried to avoid sharing a lane if at all possible. When I did share, it was…
  • There's only so much you can do, and it sounds like you've hit the limit. I don't know about you, but there's a point when I can't give another suggestion I know is going to be shot down. I start to feel like help isn't welcome. There's comfort in familiarity even if it's not a comfortable situation or circumstance. If…

  • I also disagree with your trainer. It sounds like a surefire way to get into all-or-nothing thinking. Goals are great. General goals and specific goals, but you can reach goals even if you occasionally do things that appear to be contrary to those goals. Want to lose weight? Doesn't mean you have to stay in a caloric…
  • I get up every hour and walk up to the third floor and back. I do it more for the sake of movement than as intentional exercise though.
  • I eat quark (basically a kind of greek yogurt) with berries (and sometimes granola) every day. I also eat cottage cheese, sometimes plain and sometimes with apple or tomato mixed in, every day. They're not exactly on-the-run kinds of foods, but they don't need to be heated. I think they're really filling too.
  • When I think of supporting someone, I think of encouraging her in and praising her for something she's already doing, not necessarily prompting her to do or avoid doing certain things. I think you'll do best to ask her, as has already been suggested. She may not be ready to do it yet too. Wanting it and being ready are,…
  • Usually I'm obligated to get up early to take the hubby to work, but now that I've gotten into the habit of working out in the morning, I get up and do it most weekdays even when I don't have to take him to work. I just feel more properly awake afterward, so I think about that. I also hear it can make you more tired if you…
  • @msf74 I wonder if the line you quoted also implies that when people are working hard at exercise but not enjoying it that they feel they've earned more calories or earned a treat, so it's not always necessarily to mitigate negative feelings but to reward themselves if that makes sense. @kasslea22 I agree. I think that's a…
  • This quote gets me every time.. "and i said to my body. softly. 'i want to be your friend.' it took a long breath. and replied, 'i have been waiting my whole life for this.'" - Nayyirah Waheed
