  • This month's issue of Cooking Light featured quick recipes (I believe every recipe is 20 minutes or less). I find that that does not include prep, so maybe a more realistic dinners in 30 minutes or less. I made this pasta dish and salad last night, and it was pretty good. Super easy and fairly quick. Are you open to eating…
  • I made this miso-marinated trout with ginger-lime glaze last night for dinner and it was delicious! This Coriander-Crusted Tuna is also good. And this Sweet Orange Salmon is one of my favorites. I have a lot of fish recipes. They're usually fairly easy and quick cooking, plus a reasonably lean source of protein. I would…
  • I made this fish dish last night and it was so good! Maybe a bit complicated/intimidating for a beginning cook, but I can do meals like this in my tiny apartment kitchen on a regular basis. I served it with brown basmati rice and a steamed vegetable medley (Birdseye broccoli, carrots, sugar snap peas, and water chestnuts…
  • I eat breakfast soon after getting up, after showering, getting dressed, and getting myself ready for the day. For me, this is somewhere around 7am most days, just before leaving for work. I eat a small snack around 10 (usually a banana), and this generally tides me over until lunch. Lunch is at noon, and then I will…
  • Given the choice, I would take a good mayonnaise. Miracle Whip just tastes weird to me. Too sweet, maybe? My personal preference is for mayonnaise and dijon mustard on my sandwich (usually one on the top, and one on the bottom).
  • I am planning on making these spinach and ham stuffed baked potatoes with the remaining leftovers from my Easter ham. I've made them a few times before and they are so tasty!
  • I love the Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches. Particularly mint. Snickerdoodle was my favorite, but alas, that flavor has been discontinued. I'm also a fan of Edy's Outshine bars in Creamy Coconut (the coconut water wasn't as good. I missed the creaminess). Also, the Weigh Watchers Giant Latte bars are good when I want a…
  • My preferred lunch is leftovers from the night prior. Are you cooking at home? Could you cook an additional portion to pack up and take with you for lunch? I've also come to love grain based salads. They are relatively easy to cook, travel well, and most are meant to be eaten cold, so you don't need to reheat. Tabbouleh is…
  • My diary is open, but I generally hover around 1400 calories or so. MFP set my calorie goal at 1200 calories, and I typically eat back at least some if not most of my exercise calories. 1200 calories per day is just not sustainable for me.
  • I like taking my walk in the morning. In the summer, it's nice because it isn't as hot. The streets are much quieter in the early morning than the afternoon, making my walk much more pleasant. And, I can get all sweaty and then just jump in the shower when I get home, and get ready for my day. I tend not to worry too much…
  • Can you save the uneaten bacon for another use? Crumble a couple slices on top of soup or pasta? Make a BLT? Like Allaboutthecake said (awesome name, by the way), you should probably measure the amount of bacon drippings you get out of your 2 slices, and log that.
  • When I started making meatless meals a few times a week for my husband and myself, it opened my eyes to a whole world of tasty food. At one point, I had realized that we were eating very little meat through the week in our dinners, and asked my husband if he minded that we were eating so little meat. He said he hadn't…
  • I forgot to add frozen veggies. Lots of frozen veggies. They're relatively inexpensive and will keep a long time. I will steam them in the microwave as a side dish, or sometimes thaw them in the refrigerator and use them as I would fresh veggies in dishes like stir fries, or sometimes oven roast them.
  • I typically make a meal plan, and write my grocery list from there. I think this is important for fresh produce that I want to use before it goes bad and I have to toss it. I have a little more leeway with meats because they can be frozen, so I'll stock up on meats if there is a good sale. With that said, I do have a list…
  • I'm another salmon lover voting for the filet. It's a steakhouse, so get a steak. Plus, you said you eat salmon more often. Eat the filet. Enjoy it. Feel no guilt about it!
  • It is! I splurged and bought the super dark library. They're marketed as dark chocolate with 'super foods'. I don't put much stock in super foods, and I'm certainly not eating chocolate to be healthy. I do love dark chocolate, though, and the flavors looked interesting.
  • One thing that food journaling has made me aware of, is that if I'm going to spend calories on something like chocolate, than it's going to be good chocolate to make it worth it for me. I recently bought a few chocolate bars from Vosges. They're so good! I got the Super Dark set. Certainly intersting flavors. I'm planning…
  • I'm not vegetarian, but I do try to cook at least one meatless dinner per week. Do you access to a stove or maybe an electric skillet? Beans and rice are my go-to quick, I-need-to-make-dinner-but-have-no-time-or-money meal. And you can make this in about 5 minutes using only a microwave, so it would work well in a dorm…
  • I am a big fan of Cooking Light and use them for most of my recipes. I've been doing weekly meal plans for myself for a while now. I post my meal plans in blog here on MFP. You can follow along, if you want (http://www.myfitnesspal.com/blog/PiSquared). In general, I'll just link to the recipe I'm using. I'm not following…
  • Moving stinks. I'm looking at a moving myself at the end of June. From my last experience moving, eating healthy did not happen a lot of the time. The biggest hurdle was just finding the cooking ware and dishes. This time around, I'm planning on keeping track of a couple of my go to cookware, maybe my non-stick skillet and…
  • I usually just pack up left overs from the previous night's dinner to take with me to work. Most of the recipes I have serve 4, and I'm only cooking for my husband and myself. If I'm making a simple dinner, I'll often purposefully make at least an extra portion so I can have lunch the next day. It's pretty easy to cook a…
  • Peanut oil is my go-to work horse oil. It's got a higher smoke point than olive oil, so it works well in stir fries that require a screaming hot pan. I don't have a peanut allergy, and I enjoy the slightly peanuty taste it gives. I also use olive oil, or even occasionally butter. I typically only use a tablespoon or two,…
  • I had great success with my Wii Fit in my third floor apartment. I didn't seem to bother the neighbors too much. Sit ups and yoga worked well, too. Can you take your daughter with you and go for a walk outside? Walking is my exercise of choice these days, especially now that the weather is finally starting to warm up.
  • Hi there. I'm 5'6" and currently at 207 lbs. I started somewhere around 250. I have been overweight my entire life. A few years ago I decided to do something about it. My short term goal is to just get below 200. My long term goal is 150 lbs, which would put me in the high end of normal weight, according to BMI. We'll see…
  • Mine is open. You can add me. I'd like to get some feedback on my own food diary. I'm not following any specific diet other than aiming for a calorie deficit. I usually clock in around 1400-1500 range.
  • Congrats! I'm hoping to be below 200 in the next month or so, myself.
  • Hi. I started with here at 243 lbs. It was a bit higher before I found MFP, so probably breaking 250. I'm slowly inching my way towards my first goal of under 200. I'm hopingto hit in the next few weeks or so. Feel free to add me as a friend.
  • I'm 35 pounds or so into a long, slow march to a healthy weight. You can do this! I found the concept of dieting was depressing and discouraging in the beginning. You'll get the hang of it pretty soon, and then it's much easier. Try not to get too discouraged in the beginning. I am not following any specific diet other…
  • This has been scary for all involved. It's certainly been eye opening for my friend. He's in relatively good spirits and seems willing to make all the changes that need to happen. About a year and a half ago, my husband was diagnosed with type II diabetes. It forced us to seriously look at our diet and make some healthy…
  • That's the general idea. I already pointed him towards MFP, if only to start logging his food as a way to keep track of carbs and sodium. At this point, I'm not sure what his ultimate diet restrictions will end up being, but with a heart attack and diabetes, it's probably a safe assumption that it will be carb and sodium…
