This is a really good free option, and there's free apps for iOS and Android too: https://www.reddit.com/r/bodyweightfitness/wiki/kb/recommended_routine I actually just started a bastardized version of several at-home routines: Warmups=Goblet Squats/Bridges/Haloes circuit (warmups from the kettlebell program in "Simple and…

I have been using kettlebells since mid-March. I watched a ton of videos, video'd myself, and read the form tips from the book "Simple and Sinister" a lot...I can now do 100 kb swings with a 16kg (~35lb) bell in under 5 minutes. Working on getting my hands on a 24kg bell soon. I also found watching all sorts of general…

Exercise works well for me, but it works best when it's consistent and when it's something I enjoy. If I am looking forward to my workout, I can hop out of bed and bang it out, and then I feel better the rest of the day...but I try not to rely 100% on exercise, because otherwise I get grumpy when life happens and I have to…

The nice thing about some kettlebell workouts is that you can always up the difficulty with the reps. This applies especially to ballistic movements like swings and snatches, where you can hit a plateau on weight but can set a goal of, say, 100 swings in 5 minutes, then 200 swings in 8 minutes, etc., which obviously makes…

I love it with cold coffee. Cold coffee+whey protein (unflavored or flavored)+splash of soy creamer=deliciousness.

http://pinchofyum.com/honey-ginger-tofu-veggie-stir-fry It's a bit oil-heavy as written, but you can cut back on the oil in the sauce and use less sauce in general (we make this about once a week, so we usually end up using half the sauce one week and half the next week). It's beyond delicious though, and you can swap in…

@norchids It doesn't make me hesitant, though I mostly work out at home for time reasons. It's awkward sometimes though. The best was last weekend when we were in Target and I found a sweet pair of Mossimo shorts for $12...my wife joked that they were perfect for our son's birthday party this weekend, but that I better…

Hemp protein is funky and not so great. Unless you need vegan protein powder, you'll probably have much better luck with a whey based powder. And if you are vegan/allergic to milk, Vega tastes a ton better than straight up hemp protein. It still has some hemp, but it's not nearly as hemp-y, for lack of a better descriptor.…

I've worked out the day after root canals with no issue, but mine weren't due to abscesses. I would check with your dentist but assuming you aren't on hardcore pain pills you should be ok to work out the next day with no problem.

:) I bounced around trying all sorts of random calisthenics movements before stumbling onto You Are Your Own Gym, so I totally understand. It made a huge difference for me, I hope finding a good program helps you too!

So you only get pain when you hit a certain weight on the barbell? Have you tried staying longer at the highest weight you can without pain, and then augmented it with other knee exercises like lunges?
-
Do you have Hulu? They have fitness videos and shows, IIRC.

I just guesstimate as best I can, and try to make good decisions; if I'm eating at a burger place, i get it bunless and with veggies on the side if possible. Or I split the fries with someone else. Anything with sauce, I try to get the sauce on the side, etc. Personally, I eat out maybe once every two weeks, and generally…

Yes, that is a bodyweight row. An easier variation if you can't do straight legged ones is to do them with your knees bent. I really think your best bet is to follow a preplanned progression for bodyweight workouts, rather than just trying to push for insane volumes in one particular workout. Even if you just go with…

YES! I lost 25lbs through YAYOG and a calorie deficit, and I definitely improved my strength immensely (whether I am actually more muscular or just have more definition is hard to say). And if you're really hankering for a lot of pushups, the endurance phase of YAYOG calls for 7.5 min of laddered pushups 2x per week. So…

I was never a waffle person until we bought a wafflemaker. I waffle everything now.

Do you have access to a local library? You Are Your Own Gym is a great resource. There's also a companion smartphone/tablet app for $3.99, but reading the book helps immensely. You could also look at the Reddit Recommended Routine (https://www.reddit.com/r/bodyweightfitness/wiki/kb/recommended_routine) and Start Bodyweight…

So true...good points. I have a few thoughts-it's weird for me, as a sort of "soft butch" for lack of a better term, because when I lose weight and get more muscular, I get called sir all the time. And small children ask me sometimes if I am my son's father. I've never really bought into the idea of being ashamed of my…

I would not count on a hike with a toddler for fitness, unless you're going to be carrying the kiddo for miles. We bring our two year old hiking, and his max is about 1-1.5 miles with lots of breaks. He is big on doing as much as possible without being carried though, and pretty much told us no way to the carrier starting…

Agreed on you are your own gym, or Al kavadlo, or convict conditioning, or the Reddit bodyweight program. In general it helps to have a program because it gets increasingly difficult to up the progression with bodyweight, and it's easy to get injured if you rush it. Did you have a specific question?

Veggies only is kind of tough, because you're not going to get a lot of sweetness to balance out the bitterness from the vegetables. You can try mixing mild vegetables together, like spinach+cucumber+celery+ginger, but even a little bit of lemon in that would probably balance the flavors better.
-
What's your end goal with the program? Is it to get stronger, do the 100 pushups, or something else? Just curious.
-
I know nothing about the specific workouts, but I just looked at the site-do they actually advocate topping off at 12kg, or is that just where they stop selling? Because unless you're doing insane reps, 12kg (around 25lbs) is going to get crazy light really fast.

Yes, absolutely follow YAYOG. There's an app as well for iOS and Android, I think it's $3.99. Read the book, then the app helps by providing the walkthrough and timing for each workout. I had a ton of success on YAYOG, I worked through the Beginners as well as Intermediate levels, and the only reason I stopped was that the…

I would assume jump rope and hula hoop would maybe be the same as high intensity interval cardio. Not really the same as strength training, but more like doing very short sprints.

Convict Conditioning is good, especially if you're unsure of proper form in the big bodyweight movements like squats, pushups, and pullups. You Are Your Own Gym is also excellent, and can push you quite far with just bodyweight progressions. I've done both, and I found that YAYOG was very much an all-encompassing program;…

Use old shoes, or shoes that you're ok with having out of commission for several days as they dry post-mud cleaning. Definitely have clean clothes and towels for afterwards. Try to run in one of the early heats so you are at least slogging through clean mud, and the obstacles won't be as dirty. ;)

Can you drink during your shifts? You could try making smoothies, or even just keeping a packet of protein powder and a shaker bottle on hand.
-
You could always try to hunt down a privacy screen protector (which would prevent someone who saw the screen at an angle from reading it). Or just accept that someone might do a triple take and move on. I once watched True Blood on a plane, and didn't think how awkward it would be until a super graphic sex scene came on...

What kind of weights are they, and how high do they go? Also, I'd strongly suggest speaking with a qualified physical therapist. You're very limited if you can't stand, and that's going to impact a ton of what you could do.
