  • Although I'm not the OP I'm pretty sure it was weight loss related, rather than another health condition. She said Shedding pounds with 2 pills 2x a day. In an effort to not make this completely about the pills (dills or drills), it is totally possible to lose weight in your 50's! Lots of success stories here with people…
  • I thought that at first, but what else would you do 2 of 2X a day? Bills, thrills, dills? Actually 2 pickles 2X a day might help with weight loss. :D
  • You can absolutely do this with diet and exercise!? What kind of pills are you taking?
  • Very windy and chilly here in Oregon - 55F with a low in the 40's. I was in Hawaii last week where it averaged mid 80's. <sigh>
  • I've suffered with sciatica off and on for years. Sometimes it just flares up in the middle of the night. Being as active as possible helps in the long term. For short term relief I do specific yoga poses that help. Here's a link to some of the poses: https://yogainternational.com/article/view/7-poses-to-soothe-sciatica…
  • At 5'4" and 57 years old mine is lower than it used to be due to age and metabolism. With moderate exercise I maintain at around 1700-1800 on average. I'm still trying to lose that last 5-7 pounds so trying to stick with around 1400 for a slow loss.
  • Just get off the couch and start moving more. You don't have to go outside and walk to lose weight and build stamina. Stretch for a few minutes then put on some music and start dancing. Get a pair of light dumbbells (or water bottles) and do a little dumbbell workout while watching TV. The more you get moving the lighter…
  • WW wasn't for me. I hated the point system and felt pretty deprived. Just when I got it down, they changed to Points Plus and wanted me to buy all the new gadgets and materials. I've had great success on MFP! You will, too!
  • I used to have a long commute to work and would eat half an apple with peanut butter on the way. Just halve and core the apple, add a little peanut butter in the middle and put in a baggie or container. It's easy to eat and not that messy. Whenever I'm traveling I take an insulated lunch bag with a freezie pack and fill…
  • I <3 cheese, as well! No way would I give it up and I'm super glad I'm not lactose intolerant. Several yummy and lower fat options: Athenos reduced-fat feta (not the fat-free kind) is delicious and 50 calories for a 1/4 cup. It's good melted in eggs or used like cojita cheese in Mexican dishes like tacos. I eat some on a…
  • If that is working for you, then why change it? That's a nice balance of carbs/protein/fat without being a heavy meal. I normally eat a bowl of oatmeal with coconut, pecans, and craisins with about half a cup of greek yogurt 30 minutes or so before a workout. I don't feel at all well working out on an empty stomach. Yoga…
  • Unless this is a continuous thing (in which case you'd remember what was said) just let it go. Life is too d@mn short to let other people's offhand or flippant comments get under your skin. At the end of the day it's more about what YOU think about you than anyone else's opinion. It took me 50+ years to figure that one…
  • So glad to see you're still around here! So many people lose a lot of weight but then gain it all back. You are such an inspiration to show that you CAN turn your life around!
  • My sentiments exactly. I'm sure it has nutritional value, as do all fish and other seafoods. However, I think it is really the most unpalatable fish I've ever eaten. Some fish farms have been found to use the tilapia as "cleaners" to eat the excrement of other fish after the more expensive fish are harvested or released…
  • Pay no attention to that chart on the wall! The original height/weight charts were developed in 1943 by the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and many people still refer to these exact same numbers (or similar). The criteria was that "desirable weights" were those weights at which the lowest number of deaths occurred…
  • Another post-cancer thriver here! Anyone can add me for support and encouragement! I gained quite a bit of weight during and after treatment but I'm a testament to the fact that you can reverse that trend! (even if it takes awhile)
  • I second the OXO utensils. My zester/grater is going on 7 years and one of my favorite kitchen items. In keeping with this thread topic, I would use it to grate fresh nutmeg and zest fresh orange peel to go with my roasted butternut squash!
  • It's totally a personal choice where to log things and what to call them. I've seen some diaries where people removed all the meals and just called it Good Eats or something like that. I've re-named mine to coincide with my normal daily eating habits, so I have 4 meals listed plus Snacks/Drinks at the end. Anything that's…
  • I'm assuming you mean a trial period for the premium MFP? Because the basic app (and online) is free. I'm not even sure what more the premium gives you, but if you like MFP you can continue without paying for it. (Just an FYI).
  • Same, same, same (or at least similar). I'm 57, retired empty-nester who also gained quite a bit of weight when I stopped working. Even though I had a desk job, I was pretty active and always walked on breaks and lunch, took the stairs, long way around to the bathroom, etc. My advice is to nip this trend in the bud as soon…
  • I do like it for cooking, but the coffee thing. Just weird.
  • I think this has been true for millennia. All cultures use food as a part of their communal identity, love and celebration. However, the current super-size trend has taken it to a new level entirely. I'm guilty as anyone for over-preparing and over-serving guests at my table. Instead of 3-4 dishes I'll make 8-9 and if they…
  • I'm such a thrifty bargain shopper that I'm pretty clueless as to what I actually spend a week per person. I have so much put up in stock that my weekly shopping is mostly fresh produce, eggs and dairy. I always have a garden so I can, freeze, dehydrate anything that I can grow as well as anything that comes my way from…
  • ^^^This! I often make half-and-half zoodles and spaghetti noodles and then just make my regular veggie/meat sauce. My husband loves it and it's a good way to get extra veggies. My cheapy spiralizer (less than $10) is going on 3 years now but I only use it for zucchini or yellow summer squash. Not sure how it would hold up…
  • Using the MFP food diary, weighing with a food scale, and tracking every day is key. It's a great idea to log what you're eating as accurately as possible for a week and see exactly what you're consuming on a daily basis. Then you can make adjustments. I read a post here on MFP awhile back that was something like "you…
  • You can do this, Jim! I'm 57 and have taken charge of my life and my health after many years of yo-yo dieting. Unless you want to hold out for reincarnation, we only have one life and now is the time to live it! It's never too late!
  • Keto definitely transcends the decade, but it used to be called Atkins. I tried it for all of one week and it was the most miserable week of my life. Proponents say you need to push through that and you'll feel wonderful! WTH?! No thank you. Excluding a huge amount of nature's bounty from your diet just does not seem…
  • I pretty much abide by that old adage that it's best to shop the perimeter of the grocery store. My basics include lots of produce of all kinds to eat raw or cooked, proteins like lean meat, eggs, fish, cottage cheese, yogurt, hummus. I also eat a lot of corn tortillas rather than bread. I don't drink milk much but I do…
  • Often when I read people's posts I believe I was drawn to them for a reason. Whether it's to help someone on their journey or to learn something for myself. Today it was both! As women, many of us believe our worth and value is determined by how much we are loved and valued by other people. It's often hard-wired from…
  • My husband's company pays 100% for gym membership, but he doesn't take advantage of it. He says he gets enough exercise working on our property and playing disc golf and he doesn't want to spend his time off in a gym. He's a bit of a hermit so they gym isn't his cup of team. He's also pretty fit, so I don't push it.…
