  • 2500y yesterday. 2nd half I had the pool to myself. Except for a couple of ducks. Their lane discipline is terrible!
  • Sounds like there may be some that didn't get assembled correctly or properly calibrated or maybe some a glitchy accelerometer. Mine's still going strong!
  • Back in after a dry week. Nearly 1 hour and nearly the same pace. Felt great.
  • Agreed! I have saved literally thousands of dollars over the past couple of years, just on lunch alone. The lunch I bring from home is easily 1/3 the cost of buying food at a restaurant or food truck.
  • While we wait for what I'm sure will be an awesome book by the OP, here's another vote for Mary Roach's "Stiff" -- a very illuminating description about the process and business of death. She also does a great job covering the efforts to try and weigh the human soul. Highly recommended.
  • 7250 y for the week, shoulder is feeling much better. Rest and pad thai for the win!
  • I restarted swimming two years ago after a nearly 40 year break when I was on a youth swim team. When I re-started, I struggled to tie two laps together. I found the 0 to 1650 program mentioned above and just kept going from there. Now I regularly swim for an hour and the challenge is to increase distance in the limited…
  • Well yeah, not without a chest strap  I've seen a few folks complain that their wrist HR doesn't work when swimming. Uh no, they don't.
  • If you want a heart rate monitor, you won't have that capability in the water with any of the products named so far. If lap counting is what you're after, consider a Pebble watch. They come in a variety of styles and you may find one that fits your wrist nicely. I started with one for lap swimming but because it didn't…
  • I can pass the beer test. (whew!) The movements that cause pain are pulling up (like a chin-up) or curling at the elbow. And laying on that side can be painful. Going to back off on swimming for a few days and see if it improves.
  • 1850 tonight, very cold but the snow is pretty much gone. On a different note, my shoulder is bugging me and it shortened my swim. The coach/manager claims it's not swimmer's shoulder because he said if I can hold it straight out to the side and lift up over my head, it would hurt if it was caused by swimming. I can't pick…
  • I've lost nearly 100 pounds and swimming was a part of that. The bulk of the loss was at the end of my fork. Counting calories was absolutely the key. Swimming let me eat a little bit more of that restricted calorie count, with the added benefit of making me much more fit than I was two years ago. Definitely got faster but…
  • Wimpy pool folks let a little snow get in the way of taking off the pool covers  -- maybe tomorrow.
  • The Garmin Swim may be a good match, then. It turns off its display if it doesn't detect movement, greatly extending battery life. So when it's sitting in your swim bag waiting for your next session, it's not using much juice. With everyday wear, I get about six months before having to change the batt.
  • An hour and 2550 yds. Drizzly and 40 degrees kept the pool relatively uncrowded. Left shoulder has really been bothering me, but swimming doesn't hurt much except for my open turns that I now do with the right arm. Looking forward to a very quiet swim tomorrow
  • According to this review, Garmin turns off (or down) the HR function while swimming.
  • Sorry to hear that @fishgutzy -- that's not a good reason to change things. If you already wear a watch, the Garmin Swim is pretty good for everyday wear if you're not a fashionista. There are other watches that do well as counters that probably look a bit nicer, like the Pebble. I couldn't get the Pebble data to sync…
  • Two things: Thing #1: Yes, I do feel superior Thing #2: I do not have a bunch (by bunch, I mean millions) of people trying to watch my every moment, waking or otherwise. That would make me think I'm more important or valuable than I actually am. Bonus thing #3: I don't feel sorry for the celebs and usually don't give a…
  • @emmab0902 -- don't despair. You've got a lot on your plate, with four kids, and I imagine the pool time is more precious than you think. I enjoy looking at your workouts, knowing they're out of my reach. Take a break if you need it, but I hope you stay with it. (and us). @girlwithcurls2 -- nice work. You're clearly…
  • I could go out tonight with my bride and another couple, have dinner and a couple of beers, and know I will negate it all with tomorrow's planned workout. This is not current stage, for those who are trying to lose. Don't give up and keep logging!
  • Swam yesterday and it was a good one. Not going to try matching the marches happening today. All you girls are my heroes!
  • I'm about 18 months in with my Garmin Swim watch. I have verified its accuracy numerous times. The only time it miscounts laps is if I stop in the middle of a lap due to cramps or avoiding another swimmer. Changing strokes mid-lap will sometimes make it miscount but usually it will name the stroke as "mixed" for that set.…
  • Pool manager wanted to chat when I was trying to get started today. 2350y 54 minutes, didn't get my full hour
  • 2350 y in 55 minutes, pace is creeping back. They are not doing morning swim due to the ice on the pool deck but fortunately it has been clearing for noon and evening.
  • After a 20 day break, finally got back in on a cold and windy evening. Great view of the moon. Felt like I'd been away for six months, though, couldn't come close to my usual distance.
  • Not me. I don't enjoy indoor pools. It's almost always too hot and there's nothing to look at. I enjoy glimpses of planes flying over, the trees, the clouds. That said, my last swim was kind of ruined by wood smoke sitting right on top of the water and no wind to keep it moving. Unusual for this time of year for it to be…
  • I was the only swimmer for 7pm lap swim last night. Beginning to wonder if they will keep that slot going if more people don't start showing up...
  • Got to check "swimming laps in the snow" off my bucket list on Saturday. So glad I got out for that. Not much accumulation but definitely some nice big flakes landing in the pool.
  • A very nice evening swim with ambient temp just above freezing. Two other swimmers in the pool. I just love winter swimming outdoors. The lifeguards are learning to bundle up.
  • Pool opened again last night. 2500y in 56 minutes, on the slow side. Snow on the pool deck, 35 degree ambient temp and moderate rain. First couple hundred was tough to get started but I can't complain about cold when there's someone from Alberta in this group
