  • I eat filling foods, too. I could fit some of that lemon meringue pie that's in the fridge into today's diary, but I won't. It isn't filling, and very sugary foods make me sleepy. Pie also doesn't provide the level of nutrition that my normal 300-calorie breakfast does. There are days when I am under by 100-200 calories,…
  • I tried 5=HTP a few times over the years, and I took it consistently for months at a time. It didn't do a thing for me. I tossed it out. Like most supplements (and I've tried and gone sour on them all) -- it is way oversold and makes promises it can't keep.
  • I love a recipe with a long ingredients list and an interesting blend of spices. I have two double cupboards just for spices. This looks great -- thanks!
  • I know all about this because it's a local story and it was a big deal on the news here. Too many people don't read -- or don't want to read -- the parts of those articles that say his experimental diet is not sustainable for the long term and can lead to health problems like heart disease or diabetes. His numbers looked…
  • Splenda is processed from real sugar, and technically, all things are chemical, and chemicals are not evil. I absolutely do not avoid Splenda. I like sweets, and when I want things sweeter, I add it and never feel guilty about it. I don't get an aftertaste from Splenda, but I do from Equal. I could use real sugar or agave…
  • To the OP: When you're new to these forums, it isn't advisable to post without reading for awhile and getting the lay of the land. It also isn't wise to post broad-spectrum advice to legions of people who are already losing weight successfully. As soon as I read your post, I knew there would be pages of GIFs and snarky…
  • Do whatever makes you not hate the diet. Whatever doesn't leave you feeling deprived. That way, your chances of sticking with it are much better. I do clean eating because that's what I prefer; it's the way I was brought up. I love scratch cooking, love lots of vegetables and fruits, rarely have processed foods. When I…
  • LIfting the bag of dog food didn't phase me until I realized it weighed the same amount that I've lost so far. That's what shocked us. No wonder stairs are so much easier now, and I'm only about 25% to my goal.
  • Avocado makes an excellent "spread" on sandwich wraps. Scoop it out and mash it up right on your flatbread or tortilla. Then sprinkle it with a little salt (really brings out the flavor) and add your wrap ingredients. Given a choice between mayo and avocado, I'd go with avocado every time. It makes a good egg salad too,…
  • Congratulations! You're very pretty in both shots!
  • Hahahaha -- Brussels sprouts? I thought I was the only one! I love them cold and leftover from the night before. My husband thinks I'm nuts, but what does he know? He hates lobster!
  • Groups are better than the main forums, if you can find the groups you're interested in. That's one thing that's sorely lacking on MFP. To find a group, you need to Google it or ask someone in the main forums if they know a link. I agree about the tone of the forums, which is why I could post more, but don't bother.…
  • Well, it isn't cheap, and it isn't something I make myself, but sushi or sashimi are my favorites, diet or no diet.
  • Joy, we fed raw to two dogs for 12 years. Good for you! It does cost more, but it's the healthiest for them. We feed a good premium food now because we have two different dogs and their food prep and cost just wore me down.
  • Grass fed meats? I'm in Kansas. I don't think there's anything else for our cattle to eat! Honestly, I don't pay much attention to the meats because I know the meat department at my grocery store. They carry "big ag" meats, but most of what they sell is local and packaged on site. I don't buy Tyson, Hormel, etc. As for…
  • I am ALL ABOUT THE BUTTER. I was still using real butter, just way less of it. Now I'm using Land O'Lakes Light Butter, which is about $5 a pound (!!), but it's closer to real butter than anything else and 50% of the fat and calories. It's really excellent.
  • Geeze. This is what happens when all these fly-by-night for-profit "colleges" churn out "health professionals" in 6 months, 9 months, or in one case, 11 days (no joke).
  • "If not you, then who will be the hero of your own life?"
  • TBrown, I do 40/30/30 also, and I have to watch my blood sugar because I am teetering on the line between pre- and diabetic. My fasting glucose dropped from 130 to 118 in three weeks, just got my labwork this morning. And like you, my protein is often a bit lower than 30% and fats are a bit higher. I watch my carbs very…
  • Feeling drunk is the best description. I fell off the wagon for an afternoon earlier this week and if I had been pulled over while driving, the trooper would have given me a field sobriety test, I swear. What a horrendous feeling. I hadn't felt like that in ten weeks, and I won't be feeling that way again for a lonnnnng…
  • p.s. I've mentioned this before, but the "Environmental Working Group" is not a very reliable site for reliable information on food safety. I am always very skeptical about websites with well-meaning names. ALWAYS. NPR: Why You Shouldn't Panic About Pesticide in Produce…
  • Save your money! Don't buy organic!! There is absolutely no health benefit to eating organic fruits and vegetables, and this is confirmed by testing. This is a good summary, and I urge you to pay attention to the potential downsides near the beginning ot the article. When you hear about big food recalls lately, they are…
  • I like Kasey's response too. Be conscious of all those little things. They matter a lot. I see it this way. Other people can inspire you, support you and give you things to think about, but real motivation can only come from within yourself. There will be plateaus and little voices in your head will tell you to give up…
  • Yes, great burgers and meatballs. If these were beef, they'd be my Italian grandma's meatballs.
  • This is VERY much like my recipe, and it is wonderful. I'm impressed that you add a generous helping of garlic and parsley. Parsley is sooooo important for flavor! And the cheese -- yeah baby!!
  • Yes -- and allergies too. Even if you've never suffered from allergies, you may be slightly sensitive and a headache is how that presents it. I also second the suggestions to drink more water. That helps a lot.
  • No, not weird at all. I've been making it for years, but with broth made from a ham bone and some diced ham. It's a wonderful winter comfort food. But topping it with mozzarella? Hmm, dunno about that part.
  • I'd be physically hungry after eating that. As other said, you need some protein, fat and carbs in that meal. If I just have a green salad for lunch, I am seriously hungry an hour later. So I never have just a green salad.
  • I get that way about once every 7-10 days, and I usually eat more that day than I indend to, but I don't go over my calorie goal my more than 500, and I make sure those calories aren't from ice cream, cookies or other sweets. I need to watch my sugar. And every single time that has happened, my weight is down the following…
  • When you diet the way the OP describes, it messes with your head. You dread those two days of denial. You dread them like hell. Then you can't wait for them to be over -- and that is your most vulnerable time for backsliding and going on a food bender. I've lost 21 pounds in 10.5 weeks. That's exactly 2 lbs per week. And I…
