  • You are only 28 miles from Kansas City and 29 miles from Overland Park, KS. There will be several good stores in those cities. Here's one in KC that looks good http://www.garrygribbles.com I have to drive 65 miles to the nearest city of only 58,000 and they have an REI. I can find good on sale shoes there, but now that I…
  • If you are in a big enough city to have a Dick's, you probably have a good running or outdoor sports store. Look there instead of Dick's. Usually the big chains hire minimum wage people with minimum knowledge. You can find good shoes for under a $100 if you figure out what you need and look for sales. I wear a size 14 to…
  • Shovel snow? Just kidding, but it would get you out of doors and plenty of exercise. One of my rules is never bring junk food home. So I just eat it all before I get home. Since you have an internet connection how about several cups of tea and looking for websites for entertainment or education. It's the modern equivalent…
  • Nice to know that someone else uses math to figure out the reasonableness of what someone is trying to sell. I did a water displacement test many years ago when I was an active gym rat and I was impressed with how poor the other methods were by comparison.
  • My wife does it as a plan and it is working for her. Depending on how I feel I may fast one day (36 hours) and/or have a 500 calorie day at least once a week, maybe two. I always follow a low day with lots of veggies and protein, 5 or 6 cup salad for lunch with 2.5 ounces of tuna or salmon and either a 3 ounce can of tuna…
  • My plan is down to 1340 as of yesterday. However, about once a week I splurge and eat 2,000 to 2,500. I get back to reasonable and I've still lost 11 lbs in 3 weeks.
  • Tomorrow will be a new day! I feel great. It's a warm day here, already 40 degrees at almost 2 pm with a clear blue sky after several days of mixed rain and snow muck. Go brush your horse, I know mine need it and all of us feel better for it.

  • In the US Texas chili is the standard. Meat, usually beef, and chili powder, usually ground chili peppers and cumin. Some other items can be added, but Texans never add beans. The idea of Cincinnati chili, or some of these others from the eastern US turns my stomach. Really good Mexican chili (the original) is made with…
  • I snack through the day but I generally eat 200 to 400 before noon and then go on my hour walk. I generally eat 200 to 400 between noon and 4 pm and then another 400 to 500 between 4pm and 7pm. I feel sick if I eat much over 100 calories at 6 am when I leave for work, so morning calories tend to be spread out more than the…
  • I grew up on a farm eating what we raised other than staples such as flour and sugar. Since we raised hogs and chickens, it was pork and chicken. I love bacon, ham, sausage and real cracklings (salted diced pork fat with the skin on). However, I eat very little cured meat, primarily due to the sodium. I will have bacon or…
  • 1 stone is 14 lbs. Losing 3 stone in 2 months cannot be done safely. Not even close to safely. He loves you and wants to marry you at your present weight, so choose a more reasonable target for your wedding.
  • As noted in another post grams are weight (actually mass, but the physics lesson can wait) and cups are volume. Usually European measurements make more sense than US, BUT in this case, it is totally weird to be in a European kitchen and see measuring cups and spoons in grams. You will have to use a computer search for…
  • First you are probably dealing with the difference between precise and accurate. A precise shooter gets all their shots in a tiny group, the accurate shooter hits the bullseye. In the case of your scale, I have very very serious doubts that it is accurate to 1.6 oz, because that is what the report in tenths of a pound…
  • You could count the steps. But, if you don't think that you can keep that straight past a hundred (I can't without a pencil & paper) here is the math. First you have to know how long your step is. The Army in the 1960s used a 30 inch step or 2.5 feet. That is pretty close for most people and that is how they kept troops…
  • Hi Katie. Balance is good. I call it moderation and I just had an hour long conversation with my precocious 11 yr old grandson about that. Computer games vs homework vs violin practice, vs skateboard, etc. I eat very healthily, then sabotage it by giving into a craving for a Snickers or a chocolate chip cookie at the…
  • The thing I like best about Quest bars is the fiber, then the protein. I keep one of those and a packet of Wonder Slim in my briefcase for days when I am short on protein or fiber. That's about once or twice a week.
  • I walk for an hour at lunch time at 3.5 mph. If the temperature is above 40 degrees I start sweating about a half hour in. If it is above 50 degrees it only takes 15 mins. In the summer I have to bring an extra shirt to work and clean up at the end.
  • I love Indian cooking. My wife works in Afghanistan and several of the kitchen workers in the camp she has been in for the past couple weeks are Indian and keep bringing her dal, curry and flatbread so that she can pull my chain when we describe what we ate that day. How about some dal? 1 lb yellow lentils 1 medium onion…
  • Oooo, zucchini. Good addition stephdeeday!
  • Typical Sunday casserole with the kids and grandkids 2 lbs skinless chicken breasts 3 cups barley cooked 6-8 stalks of celery chopped 1 medium onion chopped 1/2 cup mini carrots chopped 1 cup frozen green peas 1 large can mushroom stems and pieces 1 cup non fat milk 1 cup shredded parmesan (a lot of sodium in parmesan, so…
  • Go Aggies! My wife has an MS in geospatial engineering from A&M and she has great arms. Push-ups, pull-ups, bench presses, dumbbell rows, dumbbell kick backs and front and lateral dumbbell raises. Emphasize the triceps and deltoids more than the curls. Curls are best done in a bar.
  • I lost 3 lbs the first week, but that's what I usually lose at first. My surprise is that I have continued to lose 3 lbs a week. I am used to 1.5 to 2 lbs per week. I have been up and down most of this week between 232 and 230. Then today I was at 228! I am hoping to be under 220 when I meet my wife on March 1st, but…
  • I weigh every morning before I get in the shower. I am in a data intensive profession, so I like a lot of data. I know that I will go up some days and down others, but as seems to be the popular phrase these days, "I am bending the curve down."
  • I go to do my workout, so I don't pay attention to anybody else unless they are using the same space that I am.
  • I use red wine vinegar or balsamic vinegar and olive oil. I suppose if I wanted it sweet I could substitute something like canola oil for the olive oil and add some sugar, but I like it this way. I hate mayonnaise.
  • When I was 4 and 5 years old my younger sister and I were raped almost daily by our baby sitter's 18 to 19 year old son. I told a local cowboy about it and he went down and bull whipped the guy before telling our parents. I guess that is a good thing because my father might have shot him. I didn't realize there was…
  • Me too. I really would like to get credit for the first 2 lbs, but I haven't figured out how
  • That is an excellent description of my problem, mindless stuffing of my mouth. Maybe if I kept my foot in it more I wouldn't have room for the food.
  • A cup of roasted garbanzo beans is 12 grams of fiber, 15 grams of protein and 239 calories. Almost as good as Quest bars, except that they are real food. A quarter cup makes a nice afternoon snack. I don't like garbanzos except in hummus and roasted like this.
  • Myth: cycling is easier on knees than running. I did serious damage to my right knee by pushing too tall a gear up a pass in the Cascades. OTOH, I can't run very far due to the effect of the impact on a back injury that never completely healed. So I cycle, but make sure I don't fall below 50 rpm. Spin, Spin, Spin.
