  • I do great until someone puts candy on the front desk. The worst was doughnuts. For several years people would bring doughnuts to every morning meeting, plus every Friday. To make matters worse, we have a superb toffee manufacturer across the street from my office. I could handle that, but they have a retail outlet and…
  • I do something like gothchiq because I tend to eat too much at sit down meals. I find it easier to keep track of how much I eat this way and have more control over my hunger. I just enter the foods in MFP using the meals to indicate the time of day I ate. 6 to 11am I enter as breakfast, 11am to 4 pm I enter as lunch and…
  • Doesn't a new baby make a difference in your life!! I started wearing a seat belt after my first son was born. I am assuming 170 was your systolic pressure. The only time I was ever measured that high was my draft physical during the Vietnam war. Diet, exercise and meditation can do wonders for reducing high blood pressure…
  • I typically eat between 40 and 65 grams of fiber per day and have for about 4 years since I spent 1 week in the hospital, one week at home and 7 months on coumadin trying to recover from a deep vein thrombosis. The MFP fiber requirement does not meet the Institute of Medicine recommendation of 25 grams for women and 38…
  • My wife used it for quite a while in Iraq and now in Afghanistan. Her room is 6' x 8' and includes her bed, desk, clothes storage, etc. So you can see that it takes up very little space. She liked it a lot. She hasn't used it for the past couple years because she developed Guillain-Barre's syndrome and she is still limited…
  • I used to be a real gym rat, but for the past 8 years I either work out at home or do road work (walk, run, cycle, ski). Almost everybody in the gym started in poor to very poor physical condition. Most are into their routines and pay little attention to newcomers, unless they get in their way. Most will also help someone…
  • Generally, they have too many calories for their nutritional benefits for me. I use Quest bars for protein and fiber boosts on low days. OTOH, I climbed out of the Grand Canyon in a miserable storm on New Years Day 1992 carrying an 80 lb pack on 8 Power Bars, one per hour. I probably could have done the same with 8 or 9…
  • You need a proper diagnosis, but I suspect plantar fasciitis also. My wife and I both have had it and it can be very seriously debilitating. We both found that sleeping with a foot splint, making sure that the sheets and blankets at the foot of the bed are loose so that the foot can be at 90 degrees to the leg and not…
  • Most calorie online calculators say my BMR is 2000 to 2200 calories per day and that I will lose weight on 1700. My weight has been up and down a lot over the past 8 years and I have figured out that my BMR is actually about 1700 calories per day. I will maintain at that intake, gain above it and lose below it. I actually…
  • Cycling, skiing and hiking. Ich kann Deutsch lesen ein bissen, aber Ich kann nicht schreiben.
  • Beautiful western Colorado. I love the outdoors and living in a small rural county outside a town of less than 2,000. I can hunt and fish out my front door and the local farms provide really fresh food daily. However, no local university results in poor cultural opportunities and a lack of intellectual stimulation. Also…
  • 50 years ago I raced in college, in the days of Jacques Anquetil and no drugs, just guts. Cycling is one of the very best cardio exercises and in my opinion only takes second place to running and cross country skiing for all around best. Superb for the lower body and excellent for the core and upper body. Try racing an…
  • I make bean soups to take to work for lunch. Here is one from last week, as best I can remember. This week is going to be plain old lentils. Vegetarian Chili 2 lbs Red or Pinto Beans soaked overnight and then rinsed and simmered 2 hours Add I large onion diced 8-10 stalks of celery chopped 1 cup carrots chopped 1 Sweet…
  • español, inglés y portugués
  • I love the healthy stuff I eat, I just struggle with the candy bars and soda pop. But when I have a cheat meal it is usually either pizza (veggie combo of course) or tamales with lots of refried beans and rice at my favorite corner dive.
  • Western Colorado, but the title of this thread sounds awfully like a Ray Wiley Hubbard song that shouldn't be quoted on this website.
  • Wanda Jackson - Hard Hearted Woman. Check her out on youtube. My original rockabilly fantasy sweetheart. Well, there was Lorrie Collins also.
  • My wife has worked as an engineer in Iraq and Afghanistan for the past 8 years. She was very active until 2 years ago when she developed Guillain-Barre's syndrome. She was close to being medevaced to Dubai, but managed to hide the worst symptoms and slowly recover. She read somewhere online that if she wasn't in an iron…
  • I have a sedentary job and currently weigh in the 230s. I hope to be at 229 the day after tomorrow. I have found that most fitness programs think I can lose weight on 1700 calories a day. Wrong. I gain weight at that intake. Everybody is different. My goal as set by MFP is 1390 per day for a 2 lb per week loss. I usually…
  • BTW, when I fix a salad I use vinegar and olive oil with some rosemary and thyme for dressing, not anything store bought, or I just skip dressing entirely. You can run up a couple hundred calories of junk fat very easily with even "Lite" store bought dressings.
  • I don't really eat meals unless I am at a restaurant (once or twice a week). I eat snacks every couple hours, some larger and some smaller. My favorites are Bob's Red Mill whole grain or high fiber cereals in the morning, hard boiled eggs, Genova Tonno (tuna) in olive oil (excellent!), salmon, lots of big (2-4 cups) salads…
  • I spent 20 years in gyms as a very serious weight lifter including having partners who were on Olympic teams. For the past 20 years I just go to get (or stay) in shape. Sometimes when coming into a new gym I also feel intimidated. It is all in the mind. Making friends solves that problem and most people in gyms are…
  • Do a lot of web research. I can't imagine one advertised on TV as being a reasonable price for the quality. I bought one about 4 years ago and I spent $1400 delivered to my home. I had the money at the time and I wanted one that would last for many years. I found that good quality ones ranged from $500 to $5,000.
  • I count everything. For me a little cheating on my reporting would be like a little cheating on my wife. Not a good idea.
  • I broke a metatarsal 40 yrs ago running in the rain. I wanted to keep my conditioning despite the cast (plaster of paris in those days) so I used a stationary bike. I lost some conditioning but I could still climb a 14k foot peak 5 weeks later.
