  • I discovered Mini Ritter Sport chocolate. The entire package is about 60 calories and I savor it most evenings. If I find I want a second one, I remember I have some freakin' discipline to draw on and just stop! I know a lot of people here on this forum eat something called Halo Top ice cream. I understand that you can eat…
  • Our go-to television snack is popcorn. I budget for the nighttime calories and satisfy that compulsion to grab a handful of something and stuff it in my mouth. I also nurse either an icy Coke Zero, some water with a slice of lemon in it, or a glass of merlot. Yum!
  • Zumba classes, and walks or runs outside. These activities get me out of my head and relieve stress. I totally have to disengage from the source of whatever is bugging me. I sometimes call my friend and we go for a long hike nearby, and chatting and listening to each other is pretty great, too.
  • I, too, started imagining that all those gifts of snacks are covered in the germs people sneezed or coughed on them.
  • You had a one-off experience. Mostly people don’t care what anyone else does or what they dress like. I was nervous but started going to group classes where I stood in the back and kind of stayed in the background. I started a weight lifting class and one woman turned around to tell me I was doing lunges wrong but I took…
  • One pound per week is a great rate of weight loss.
  • I would recommend a trip to your doctor for an evaluation, and ask about a referral to a dietician. My doctor actually had a bunch of handouts on nutrition and some advice on how to incorporate certain foods and eliminate others. So I didn't need to go to a dietician after all. I agree with the ideas given above, you can…
  • Hi! Sorry, I'm in Washington State but live north of Seattle. BUT, I found some success using the Meetup.com website to find groups here in my town that would meet for short runs, weekly walks, and long hikes. It's a great way to find a buddy! Another option for you might be calling a running store. My local shop organizes…
  • I don't know your financial situation or whether you have access to a gym, but I went to a yoga class and found it very helpful to ask the instructor to show me proper form. It was an hour class, but when I was starting I would leave the class after about 15 minutes. That helped me build stamina. My husband also joined the…
  • I'm 5'6", and lost 20 pounds in about 4 months eating 1200 calories a day plus about 70% of the exercise calories I earned. MFP is designed for you to lose weight after eating back those calories, so be sure to do that to fuel yourself. BUT, I would warn you to lose at a slower rate, about 0.5 to 1.0 pounds per week. At a…
  • I'm 58, lost 30 pounds last summer and fall using MFP. Best thing I ever did, weight-wise! Totally doable.
  • My experience losing around 2 pounds a week was that it was too aggressive for me. I reached my goal weight, but unfortunately I lost muscle mass in my arms. I was taking an hour long weightlifting class to develop muscle but the final result was my arms now look limp and puny. My bicep skin looks dimply and wrinkled now…
  • I wonder whether BetterHelp.com might be worth looking into. They have a sliding scale charge of $35 to $70 per week, with UNLIMITED on-line counseling. You can live chat, phone or video chat with a counselor they pair you up with. You can subscribe as long as you want. Maybe you could consider doing one or two weeks, then…
  • Set yourself some mini-goals, like losing three or four pounds a month. Reward yourself for your successes, whether it is buying yourself a new shirt or taking a hike with a friend. I lost 30 pounds following this MFP program, so it's definitely doable! Good luck!
  • You changed your eating habits just 1 month ago. I did not see a change in my waist measurements for at least two months. Be patient. Good luck!
  • My adult son goes to his university ‘s counseling center, and it’s completely free. Your situation is affecting your studies and your school will be supportive of giving you the tools you need to cope with your obsessiveness and the stress causing you to lose focus. So... take some photos of your face, front body, side…
  • Wean yourself off the Mt. Dew, slowly. It has a lot of caffeine and going cold turkey could give you a headache. Have a real one when you usually have your first one. When you “need” your second one, pour about one third of the serving down the sink. I’m not kidding. If you want a third one, make it a Diet Mt. Dew. You’ll…
  • Well, if you’re prescribed this to “jump start “ your weight loss, ask your doctor when you should wean off it. Maybe the intent is to use it for two months or so? Because a jump start is intended to be a short term thing!
  • I’ve read that, too, but never tried it. Supposedly it slows absorption. What I did was take a minimum dose and take it during or after a meal so it was digested with food. This is one of those supplements you should discuss with your doctor. It can affect high blood pressure meds as well as some diabetes meds. By the way,…
  • I wouldn’t sweat the difference between 5 calories and 15 calories. If you’re really concerned you’ll overeat your calories for the day, pick the higher value or split the difference. My thought is that one bowl of soup will vary anyway. Today your bowl might have a slightly bigger serving of meat and potatoes, the bowl…
  • Your weight loss rate is perfect! One pound a week is what I wish I’d done. I set MFP to lose two pounds per week, and despite lifting weights I lost a lot of muscle mass in my arms. Not a great look! So keep going as you are. I started MFP in May and lost 30 pounds at the age of 57. This month I turned 58 and am…
  • Hmmm. According to internet weight charts your current weight is well within normal. But I can totally relate to wanting to lose a little more. I don’t know your daily calorie goal. If you’re keeping track of the calories you earn by exercising, try eating back just half of that. That adjustment worked for me.
  • MFP recommends no fewer than 1200 calories a da for women, plus you are supposed to eat back the calories you earn through exercise. Believe me, you’ll still lose weight.
  • I’m assuming you’re a woman, and here’s what I’ve done. Wear lightweight long underwear under your pants. I like the Cuddleduds brand because they worked for me: they are soft next to your skin and slick on the outside so your pants won’t stick to them or bunch up (avoid cotton). Wear thicker socks. If wearing a skirt, use…
  • Eat back at least half of the calories you earn from exercising. You’ll still lose weight but maybe you can avoid losing muscle mass. Also, your body needs to fuel your workouts.
  • Be patient. I lost weight and reached my goal but I lost the pounds first from my waist, hips and breasts. My stomach and love handle fat were the last to go. Bummer, but that’s usually how it works for most people.
  • Sorry to hear about your mom’s cancer. Good for you that you decided to take care of yourself now!! You’ll be able to support her as you grow more strong in your eating habits, the feeling of control is very helpful in times of stress. I hope you can fit in at least a daily walk to manage some of the pressure you’re under.…
  • Maybe I’m the weirdo here, but I have a glass of wine every day. Five ounces of merlot is 125 calories. That’s a pretty measly pour, so I exercise to “earn” a bit more than that. By the way, 1200 calories is the absolute minimum amount per day. I’d suggest ratcheting down your rate of loss to half or one pound per week.…
  • Don’t skip the smoothie! Big deal, you went over your calories. Don’t do that tomorrow.
