  • You probably built up your base fitness in the gym - I came back to running with 20 mins solid after about eight months, but I had a solid level of fitness from swimming to get me going. Pay attention to knees and feet - take a rest day if you start developing pain at all or excessive soreness. And take regular rest days…
  • 2 km in 65 min. Decided to work on my other strokes today, 200m each then 2*400 free for my main set. Felt somewhat sluggish today - probably because of yesterday's swim.
  • I get you. Every issue becomes polarized, despite the fact that 1. Every person is different and 2. Usually you should just go for a happy medium. The things that pretty much everyone here will agree on is diet and creating a deficit is more important for pure uncomplicated weight loss. Exercise helps you eat more and get…
  • I've heard this about pretty much all exercise, but I doubt it would make any difference worth writing home about. I do my bodyweight circuit fasted (because first thing in the morning is the best time for me) and I've noticed no amazing (or even small) differences in fat loss beyond what could be expected. I would never…
  • Masters. I think coach was trying to drown us. All sprints and descending sets (only one of which I managed to actually cut my time down). Last sprint set was butterfly, too. Mentioned my plan to swim in the 3.8km race. He thought it was a very doable goal for me. :)
  • I was so excited to the pool early today. I was gonna get in to my land before anyone else and everything I realized I left my suit at home. By the time I'd gotten back, the first lane had Mr. Oblivious-double-arm-backsroke-with-frog-kick-and-flippers in it, who won't circle or change lanes unless a lifeguard tells him to,…
  • Definitely want to train for more than the race distance. It's a really big lake, and a calm days is still gonna be pushing me toward shore, for certain. I have made up a plan for the coming week, including running and my strength circuit, though I've identified one of each that could be jettisoned if I feel like I might…
  • Newbie for me? Lol. I hope to achieve outdoor swimmer. :)
  • lol. But it's only 28km Mac! Maybe it's only a good rule of thumb for us that don't swim quite so much. (You know, now that you've added it up, I would like to point out you swim more in a week than I do in a month. I need to step up my game!)
  • Sprints are good - I do them as 25m sprint, 25m back recovery, 50 front technique, so you could easily do 10 of those. You can also do drills to improve your technique - what you need to work on would be specific to you, however. Mixing it up with kicking, pull buoys, catch-up etc. I don't think you'd really need to do the…
  • Every time I try diving my goggles come off, and I can't practice diving at my regular pool so it was very embarrassing at Master's the other week. Next time we do dives, I'm asking for some tips first.
  • I swam yesterday but didn't have access to a computer until this morning - 30 min 1250m ladder with 30 sec rest between: 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 200... etc.
  • Thanks everyone for the encouragement. I think I'm pretty set on doing it - as soon as I get paid I'm gonna sign up for it so I'm fully committed. Taking the day off from the pool, and hopefully will come up with a plan for the next month or so, which I will share and provide updates one. I'm so excited!
  • I've never heard that before, but it's incredibly comforting. I easily swam over 5k in the last four days, and I have been taking it light this week.
  • I'm pretty sure I'm gonna do it, now! Now I have to figure out a solid plan for training (and rest. I need to be strict about rest, for sure). Might start with upping my basic workout to 3km or so (over a period of weeks) and every two weeks do a 'long swim' workout of a set length (Try for a 1.5km first, and up it as I…
  • You might surprise yourself! Your doing fantastic, and every day in the pool your getting better.
  • OMG what a swimsuit. *cough* Sorry, yes. Discussion of goggles invention.
  • Mac, I think it's that kind of day. I didn't want to go today either, right up to getting out of the hot shower before my swim. Made it though, and very glad I did. 1840m in 1 hour, mostly drills.
  • This is so me, only in km. And shorter distances.
  • I used the zenlabs one. I now use Zombies, Run! and wish I had tried out the Zombies 5k program - it's a seriously awesome game (yes game. Totally not exercise now!)
  • See, I wish that this level of common courtesy was the norm. :) As it is, I've shared lanes with people doing a double arm backstroke/wide frog kick with flippers combination before...
  • Master's practice. Different coach today, so different style of workout. Some were complaining that he didn't really give any tips - I got some, but only because my arm was hurting after he told me to keep my elbow up and I asked questions. Apparently still need to rotate more!
  • swimoutlet.com has reasonably priced swimsuits up to a 48" bust (sadly not much selection in the larger sizes).
  • fishgutzy - lane ropes are no assurity for protection. I've been whomped several times by a ridiculously wide breast stroke in the other lane.
  • I gave up after 1km today - to many darn kids around, and I was in a lane with one really fast 12 year old and one pretty slow 60 year old. But I got my drills in, so that's something.
  • No swim for me till Monday - Easter weekend means closed pool today and Sunday, and I don't go on Saturday's. Distance per stroke - though really it's more like 'strokes per 25m'. I was taught that it's a much better way to gauge how something is working or how you're holding up when you're tired than speed.
  • I've always used speedo goggles (~$15CAD), and the only reason I had to replace my last pair was because I lost them.
  • I've had the same one for 3 years and a bit (but that that was with maybe 12 months total of consistent use)... I think I need to replace it soon. I'm noticing the fabric is showing wear and it's a bit saggy round the middle. I don't replace things as often as I should, for anything, though.
  • 1650m in 60 minutes. I got to my 5th sprint set (25 sprint, 25 recover, 50 stroke work) and I was just kaput. Wasn't until I got out of the pool that I figured it was probably because of Masters+Run yesterday that I was so low energy. On the bright side, I was maintaining a good DPS even when I was so tired. :)
