  • I had to stop completely for a month :( It took 2 weeks for the pain to start to go down because I was at the point where any pressure on my right leg was incredibly painful. Then I slowly started working my way back into it. What I found was that tredmills are a no go for me. People like them because they are softer than…
  • It sounds like shin splints... but the fact that you're only on your 5th run makes me skeptical of that. I've had them and yes they start mild. I tried to keep running through them (was training for a 25K) and ended up barely being able to walk after a month. I tried stretching, strenght exercises, ice, compression socks,…
  • The first is a personal preference thing. I'd rather lift/run a little hungry than right after a big meal. But it's really about what works for you. Eating after a workout... well.. the age old "you need to injest protein within 20 minutes of a workout" is what most people go by... but more and more research is coming out…
  • Agreed. Be honest about your experience level and goals when you are putting your info in.
  • There's a difference between losing weight and being healthy though. The immediate goal is dropping weight. But what is the end goal? She talked about being around longer for her three children. And I'm going out on a limb and guessing that since she mentioned everyone in her family is very overweight, that her children…

  • www.bodybuilding.com = my best friend. They have nutrition information (including recipes), training programs for men and women based on your goals and experience, and breakdown (with videos) how to perform each lift properly. Spend some time on there. I've heard a lot of people like the stronglifts 5x5. I've never done…
  • How do you feel about avocados? I love them, probably too much. And would add them to pretty much everything if they weren't so calorie dense. They're high in healthy fat and will definitely close the calorie gap.. if you like them.
  • I'm not sure how to begin this... Sugars are made from carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. The two we use for our major metabolic pathways are glucose and fructose (other sugars are altered in the body to become either of these two). Table sugar, sucrose, is glucose and fructose linked together. There are several other types of…
  • I take a preworkout supp because I usually lift after work and that is time in the afternoon that my body would really prefer a nap. I take Cellucor C4
  • Take the time off.. I trained for a 25K through winter and really messed myself up in February because I didn't listen to my body and take some time off. My pain was also in my right leg. I let it go to the point that I could barely walk. When I realized I was limping while walking and couldn't go up and down stairs, I…
  • I like to take a week off from lifting a couple times a year. It's supposedly good for you and lets your muscles fully recover from the schedule.. Idk if it does anything but it's kinda nice to take a break. I fully take time off when I do it. No cardio or anything. Getting back into is hard sometimes though. I think it's…
  • Your quads should hurt. Your butt (glutes) and back of thighs (hamstrings) should also be sore. Squats are fabulous! Your lower back muscles and core may be sore too. Make sure you pay close attention to form though. It's everything. Your femur (top leg bone) should be parallel with the floor at the deepest point of your…
  • You're hungrier for a couple of reasons, one being that your body is doing a lot of work when you lift weights. MFP doesn't really let you track the calories burned from lifting. You're also hungry because of the energy your body is using to repair the muscles you stress when you lift weights. Yes, you are gaining muscle.…
  • Aww thanks  I get nervous posting stuff like that cause sometimes it is not well received. You guys rock :) It's a really common topic and I just felt like sharing what I've learned
  • Accept the soreness, it's part of weightlifting. It never stops. If you're groggy tired, you either need more food or more sleep. Take your iron supp with a glass of orange juice. OJ helps iron absorption in the body.
  • There's another long thread going around about this exact topic.. So... I'm fresh (as in 2 days) out of a biochemistry class and would like to shed some light on metabolism, anabolism, and catabolism. First off, can't is a very strong word. The human body is an incredible machine that has an amazing capacity to overcome…
  • Agreed.
  • "Positive Nitrogen Deficit" isn't a real thing (that i know of) I think you're mashing positive nitrogen balance and calorie deficit together. Positive nitro balance is when you've eaten enough protien, which is made from amino acids, all containing a nitrogen group on the end, that your body flushes it out. They claim…
  • Get off the tredmill. For some people they're great, for others they're not. I got crippling shin splints this winter training for a 25k on a tredmill. I can outside everyday on pavement or trails and be fine. If i run on tredmills too consistently, the shin splints come back. Most think tredmills are better because…

The human body is an incredible machine that has an amazing capacity to overcome really crappy conditions. An average person can survive a month…
  • I don't think I've heard of thermogenic pre workouts...? I know thermos are taken as a supplement (fat burner) but I've never heard them considered as a preworkout. Either way, a lot of people go back and forth with thermogenics. There's not too much strong evidence to back them up but from everything I've read the best…
  • That's pretty typical of any preworkout. Big containers are a marketing thing. If you haven't taken the shatter yet and you're new to preworkouts, do yourself a favor and start at 1/2 to 3/4 of a scoop. Especially if you don't comsume a lot of caffeine. Shatter is one of the more intense preworkouts i've used.
  • If you have some form of kidney disease then you would really want to watch how much protein you're eating. Your kidneys filter out the excess nitrogen from the protein you're eating and if they're not functioning properly you may have issues. The only organ in your body that needs glucose to function is your brain. The…
  • Look into HIIT (high intensity interval training), it's been shown to work really well for fat loss. HIIT would be like sprint (like really sprint as fast as you can) for 30 sec-1 min, then walk for 1 or 2 minutes. The whole point is to raise then lower your HR. But honestly, if you want to get into long distance running…
  • You didn't get where you're at now in a day/week/month, you're also not going to get where you want to be in a day/week/month. Weight loss is not easy, and it's not fast, and our instant gratification society makes it that much more difficult. Commit to it. It can take 6 weeks or more for you to notice a change in your…
  • This. I've been lifting on a deficit for almost 3 months. The scale is barely moving. But every week or so I notice more cuts in my muscles. I'm still increasing or maintaining my strength at the very least. 40% of my calories comes from protein which is approximately 1g per pound of lean body weight.
  • Yup! I always tell myself that if I can get to 12, it better still be difficult to push that last rep out. Once it's "easy" to hit 12, time to increase weight.
  • bodybuilding.com You can pic what muscle(s) you want to target and select bodyweight only. It explains the move and has short clips that show proper form. As well as tons of articles on training, supplementation, and nutrition.
  • Agreed. Most people forget that a lot of the stuff that's sold are supplements. I use protein shakes because I'm trying to get 140g of protein in my diet daily and being an on the go with full time work and school doesn't leave me with a lot of options. But still most of my protein comes from eggs and especially chicken…
  • I'm there with you  I still count calories, but what's more important to me is eating as clean as I can. It's difficult with all the temptation around but I feel so much better cutting out most processed foods. Short of granola bars and protein powders, pretty much everything I eat is a whole un/minimally processed…
