  • I took a class called "Chisel" at my gym last night (Crunch). It turned out to be 30 minutes of tabata workouts. I thought I had reached a base level of fitness but I discovered that I was just wrong. I felt like I was going to puke when I was done and my butt is kicked. So I'll go back on Monday because obviously it is…
  • So I haven't really been following a program the past couple of weeks because my running partner has been scheduling hill runs/hikes and I have been doing those. Today I spent half an hour running up and down a steep hill on the 10K trail. I probably should have gone longer, but we did a 3.5 mile trail run/hike on Saturday…
  • I got in a half hour run. 2.66 miles. It was surprisingly easy considering the time off. On Saturday I'm going to get up early and do a 5K since the fam will be at a convention. My running partner has already posted the hill workout on Tuesday so I'm committing to that (even though it's at 5:30am - Oy!). I think I can get…
  • I took a break last week as multiple things collided - bad heat wave, TOM, and waiting for my thyroid to perk up. And then this week has been tough. I'm working on a cosplay project with my daughter and the universe conspired against us to make everything last minute, even though we started a month ago. I did a cruddy run…
  • I was too. Everyone is. But you can totally do it, and you'll feel great after you do. If you feel like you need to walk, slow down to walking speed but keep running. Breathe deeply and catch your breath. You'll be surprised at how you don't really need to walk to catch your breath. You're probably walking pretty hard and…
  • I was diagnosed with Graves at 19, and I wanted to tell you that I had a similar experience in that my doctor dismissed my issues and my mother had to push for bloodwork. I was very anxious and would have crying spells for no reason. The thyroid has a significant effect on emotional state. I was put on an anti-thyroid drug…
  • I had mine out about a year ago and I've felt much better since. The only side effect that I had is what some people call "dumping" and misunderstand to be a reaction to fat. It's actually an effect of the bile dripping consistently into your intestines/bowel, and it's easily managed with a cholesterol binder like…
  • I just looked into it, and you have to help arrange sponsors and everything. A little more than I want to get into right now. I might be able to set up a regular 5K through one of the meetup groups though.
  • I wish we had park runs around here. We have some meetup groups but the participants are pretty limited in number and they're mostly focused on training, not social runs. If you want to do the park runs, you may not have to wait. You're probably able to run 5K already, especially in an upbeat setting. I did a 5K race in…
  • I did my 32 minutes yesterday, but it was ugly. I didn't thing I would finish. My allergies are attacking again and I forgot to hit my inhaler before I started. It was pretty hot too, which probably didn't help things. I'll be going again tomorrow for my last 32 min. I may go to the lake later in the evening though. I'm…
  • This is what happened to me when I had gallbladder issues. I'd echo the advice to see your doctor because there are some procedures that may improve things without surgery if that's the issue, and if it's not, the problem should be addressed for your comfort, if for no other reason. Having been there, I know it's no fun.
  • @eleanorhawkins, that sounds like a good approach. Congratulations on your progress. It looks like you have already come a long way, so I'm sure you will be successful.
  • Yes. I'm done with C25K and currently running 32 minutes and doing 2.8 miles (My 5K race time on May 28 was 35:41). I will continue to increase time and mileage to get to 5K and then start a bridge program within the next couple of weeks. I am using the Run Double app which has a 10K program. I signed up for a very…
  • I'm reducing one of my migraine preventive meds because the iron seems to have fixed my remaining headaches (I regularly have a nerve treatment that takes care of most of them). Unfortunately there are withdrawal symptoms, which are basically flu-type symptoms, with the primary symptom being nausea. I missed running…
  • The Mojo is some seriously powerful stuff.
  • To address whether you can run a 5K at the end: It is true that if you follow the timed program, you'll finish running 30 minutes straight, which is not long enough for most beginners to run a 5K. BUT, I had a race scheduled during week 8 and I was able to run the entire 5K. I just didn't run it in 30 minutes. My time was…
  • Right now I only do the running, with walking or hiking on off days. I have some health issues and I was worried about fatigue. As it turns out, it looks like I still sent my thyroid into shock, which happens sometimes with thyroid disease and intense exercise, so I'm glad I was conservative about it. I do sometimes do…
  • I'm in California and run when I get off work. There is a significant difference in my performance depending on whether it is hot or cool. I ran once in the early morning, and it was so nice. It's starting to get really hot now, so I'm probably going to have to push my runs until later in the evening. But, yeah,…
  • Hi. I just finished C25K and I did occasionally run extra when friends were available and looking for company. I also hike and I do hike on days adjacent to running days, for at least 5 miles. I think you are probably fine for short runs between. I don't think pace matters. I think that, like during C25K, it probably comes…
  • I was just going to suggest the crockpot too. Basic formula = meat+veg+liquid. Cook on low until meat done (8-10 hours). I have a model that has a removable crock, so it can be prepared the night before and kept in the fridge, for starting in the morning. Example of basic formula: pot roast + carrots, potatoes, onions (can…
  • I have to eat before I run or my legs feel really tired and heavy. However, I do something carby, and about two hours before. Usually one of those hard oat-based granola bars (Nature Valley). I find if I give myself some carbs/quick fuel, my workouts are more effective. Also, when the body burns through the glucose stores…
  • I finished it on Wednesday. Although I wasn't able to do a 5K in the time provided by the app, I did an actual 5K in week 8 and I was able to run the entire race. I'm going to start a 5K to 10K program next week. It's a great program.
  • Best quote today. I finished the program on Wednesday. I was going to stick with this mileage and work with it for a bit, but I think I actually am going to start with the bridge program on Monday. That will be five 8 minute runs with a minute in between for week 1 (it's five weeks). Then I'll still be kind of in sync with…
  • I don't know how helpful this is because my problem is mild compared to yours, but I was getting some exercise-induced asthma when I started couch to 5K a couple of months ago. We were having a lot of pollen and I run outside. I made sure I took my allergy med and used my inhaler before starting, which seemed to help. I…
  • Hi Belen. There are a few different apps you can use. Most people seem to use the Zen Labs one, but I use Run Double because I found it easier to use. You do have to pay after a trial period, but I think the cost was pretty low and it also has fun run, improvers, and bridge programs to longer distances. Either way you…
  • I only have one more run left! I'll finish up tomorrow night. The 30 minute run last night was surprisingly easy. Doing this program is seriously one of the best things I've ever done. I will probably try to do 32 minutes on Friday and increase time until I'm doing a 5K. Last night I somehow got to an 11:07 mile, so I'm…
  • I'm doing week 9 day 2 tonight. I had some blood tests this weekend and found out that I'm pretty hypothyroid again. I'm shocked because I'm so hungry and waking up in the middle of the night so I thought I was actually hyper, but I guess that can happen with hypo too. I'm kind of surprised I've been so successful running,…
  • Well, I used to have to stop and rest a few times going up the mountain, but I didn't have to at all today. I have two more days for the program and I'll do them Monday and Wednesday. I think that on Friday I will run up and down the first steep hill to the hike a few times.
  • I use the Run Double app, for which you can select time or distance. I started on March 27, and ran a 5K on May 28 (last Sunday). I think the 9 weeks went by pretty quickly, but Run Double does allow you to easily skip workouts. You have to pay after a trial period, but I think it was less than $5 and it has additional…
  • @tinkerbellang83 That seems like a good plan then. If you didn't do all of week 3 then you may be correct that it's why you are struggling. Week 4 is a pretty significant escalation and I can see that a missing "bridge" day would cause problems. I did go and run, and of course it was fine when I got there. When I drove up,…
