  • So, have you read Maffetone's book? Nothing has changed since the early 90's and you can get his "training for endurance" pretty cheap. There are many other books you could read including an old physiology text book from a medical school. It's fine if you want to train a different way, but you shouldn't blatantly state…
  • It sounds like you are arguing variations in max heart rate invalidate Maffetone's "180 formula." I would argue that max heart rate doesn't matter. But, which TYPES of muscle fibers you are training does matter. And I think Maffetone and his "180 formula" covers more than a majority of the population if you feel there is…
  • Another maffetone-ism. Put on a mask and run at night. Most of my training is done at 11-12 min miles. I ran a 9 mile event with almost 1000' of elevation gain and squeaked out like 8:45 min miles. I hadn't run that fast in a long time, I felt great and had plenty left in the tank. I'm of the opinion most of us dont need…
  • packit gourmet is pricey, but it is tasty. You also don't need to do full backpacker meals when kayaking/canoeing/rafting. We'd often bring cheese (oil will leak out, but you can eat it), potatoes, cabbage, onions, bottles of ranch dressing (unopened), etc. Weight isn't as much of an issues and with canoeing, neither was…
  • And how do you measure your "lactate threshold?" Please don't tell me you use an equally as wonky "calculation." Like running a 10k and use your HR from that.
  • I would argue max heart rate is a meaningless number.
  • The single weakest point will be the wheels. More specifically, the rear wheel. I would suggest a cross 3, 36 spoke, double butted spokes, quality rim for the rear wheel. It should made by someone who knows what they are doing and properly tensioned. Not a machine, but a knowledgeable human being. There are 2 people who I…

  • 8 months is about as long as I've been at it this go around. And yes, I shed 40 lbs over that time frame and yes I would like to shed another 30 lbs. I'm 34, so my faster times benefit from age. As I said above, just about every training program for running, cycling and swimming can benefit from having an extensive aerobic…
  • It actually is. My normal 10-13 mile trail run out my backdoor and I do 11 min miles with an avg hr of 130-135. If you wanted to spend $5, you can pick up maffrtones training for endurance 2nd ed. A very good resource. In it, you'll read that you need to stick with the plan for 6.months to a year. I spent 2. 5 months on a…
  • Agree with above. You really need to ease into climbing very slowly. Especially in the gym. Someone new should look to have one climbing session, maybe 2 a week.
  • 180 - age was developed by Dr Phil maffetone. Furthermore you're supposed to either subtract or add up to 10 bpm based on your fitness. Practically all elite athletes train differently than most average Joe's. Certainly they dont have the "no pain no gsin" training philosophy. Even athletes like Usain bolt spend a…
  • Pain doesn't actually mean you are "building" muscle. In fact, we our bodies can't create muscle fibers through exercise stimulus. To the ops question. Take a nap, watch some movies, you're along for the ride at this point.
  • It's not the fact that we disagree, it's that you're all over the place. I could care less what you do for exercise. Just at least pick something! But yes, your reasoning is incorrect for your workout regimen. Which is fine, many people practice the same thing. In fact a majority of people do. It's no wonder many end up…
  • So which is it? Do you think "if you ain't huffing and puffing and sweating...you ain't doing it right?" Or there is some benefit to the "Cardio zone?" I clipped the part about "wasting time." If you straddle the fence too long, eventually your crotch will get sore.
  • I did my first ragbrais, 22, 23 and 24, on a Schwinn crisscross with butterfly handle bars. I was 11, 12 and 13 years old. I would buy used or online. The last three bikes I've purchased I've done without ever stepping in a bike store, and my wallet is better off for it. Before that, I still rode the Schwinn le tour my…
  • Ditto. I'm doing the arctic circle trail this summer and have liberty Ridge and ishinca Valley on the books for 2018! 2018 plans are tentative, but firming up nicely....
  • I do think the maps on the fenix are hoaxy. That's not to say others can't derive some utility from them or have a differing opinion. It could probably help me out once in a while. And I would love one, but it's not a cost I'm willing to pay right now. I wouldn't consider the fenix 5x a dedicated navigation source for…
  • cheapest option is to use your smart phone with an app like gaia gps and then buy a bluetooth HR monitor. I do this in the summer for up to day outings. Well, I did it before I bought my fenix. But, I'll still use the smart phone/gaia combo in the summer for day outings. In the winter, because of the potential of more…
  • You're only "unfit" if you deem yourself to be. You should train the muscles you need/want to use. Or if there is a certain appearance you're after, do what you need to do. If you want to just be really good at exercise, maybe crossfit is your thing. If you want to be really good at running, you should run lots and train…
  • long duration, low intensity. I don't do "HIIT". I also do a lot of stairs, long duration, low intensity. I'll go out on a limb here, but HIIT is not what you want to do. Some people may make it work. And it can work, but when you start stringing multiple days together the "HIIT" really starts to take it's toll. If it's…
  • My last 2 weekends..... Setting the skin track up BCC in the wasatch Yawner Gullies on San Luis Peak in Colorado
  • I use avon's face sunscreen and a hat. when hiking it is a hat with a drape over my ears and neck. I sweat a lot and my sunglasses always end up with dried sweat on them, so I prefer the hat if there is no snow. I also wear long sleeves and pants if I'll be out more than a couple hours. The trick to sunscreen is to let it…
  • I would apply the law of specificity here, and spend as much time walking/running/doing stairs as possible at a low intensity. I wouldn't do cycling unless you need an active rest day, but you should train today so you can do specific and applicable training tomorrow. Kill the kettle bells, get a 20 min or so core (not…
  • Not true. If you go a store who has someone who makes their wheels and knows what they're doing, a lot of bikes will hold that weight. Get 36 spokes, cross 3. Spend the money in the wheels, have Peter white build you a set is where the smart money is. My tandem has 700c wheels, 36 spokes, x3 and were not a sub 300 lb team.…
  • Minimum would weight x vert converted to kcal or just calories as often referred to. If running, probably a bit more. I do over 2000 vert of stairs a day, and as with most exercise, you don't burn as much as you think you do. Hr has little to do with calorie burn.
  • If you're sore, you're training too hard. This is coming from the guy that runs with O E rest day a week. Stretching does little for acidosis in the muscles. Also stretching should be done carefully and properly to avoid injury. Static stretching should be avoided.
  • Prevention. There's very little benefit to going too hard and getting knocked down for a couple days. Once the acidosis takes over, you're pretty much along for the ride.
  • Seat does not need to be flat. I actually prefer a slight nose up and have ridden close to 800 miles in under 4 days that way. Important point is to have your weight on your sit bones, a relaxed upper body and weight more or less over the BB. Find what is comfortable for you, not some Fred.
  • Mask doesn't help. I would argue it actually has the opposite effect than what you are trying to achieve. Low intensity, long duration training is what you need. If you want a book to reference and is easy to understand I would recommend training for the new alpinism. You can also check out their website uphillathlete.com.…
  • I have 700c wheels and run compass cycles' stampede pass tires (32 wide, a true 32). It's a misnomer to think a thicker tire is slower. The wind drag from your bike tires is negligible when you factor in a high center of mass which impacts wind drag 99%. Rolling resistance is related to the suppleness of the rubber and has…
