I recently browsed a local theater's showtimes, and so now all my banner ads are for the play "Women Laughing Alone With Salad", with a picture of a naked women bathing in a giant bowl of salad. Can't tell if inspirational, or ironic...

You might have to experiment a bit before you figure out what is the best split. If you're worried about being hungry often, you might try to have smaller meals and substantial snacks, therefore spreading out the calories throughout the day. Or maybe you aren't very hungry in the morning but find yourself really hungry at…

I'm in a similar situation, OP. I am in my late 20s and I don't have any health problems aside from my obesity. But I know that if I don't take steps now and lose this weight, I'll really suffer in my 30s and 40s. I looked at my family for examples. My mother was thin and very healthy until she had my sister and I, and she…

I LOVE my yoga class, and when I'm doing yoga I feel strong and powerful. I really appreciate my teacher because she gives a lot of meditative instruction as well, and encourages people to focus on their breathing and to come inside themselves. I am a big overthinker, with constant mental chatter, and I find her classes…

I totally hear you! Part of my problem, and maybe yours, is eating out of HABIT. It was always my habit to start snacking as soon as I got home. I would meander into the kitchen, get some crackers or chips, and munch munch munch all night long. It has taken some time for me to develop a new habit of immediately going to…

I also am a big sweater! When I'm working out on the treadmill, I will have little pools of sweat below me, where it has dripped down my forearms and off my elbows. I feel absolutely disgusting after that. I also sweat without working out, especially in summer. Some days, just walking from my apartment door to my car will…

I'm always way over my sugar goal, and again that's probably due to fruit--banana and frozen fruit in the morning, pear or apple with lunch, and grapes with dinner. It's not like I'm eating candy bars and ice cream all day! As long as you aren't diabetic and you haven't been told by a physician you need to worry about your…

I'm a salty binger--I can easily eat a family size bag of chips on the five-minute car ride from the store to my apartment. ;( It is very important that I avoid foods like that. Now, if I let myself have a treat of chips, I always buy the little single serving bags you get at the checkout line. I simply cannot stop myself…

RodaRose, that first book from WebMD you suggested sounds helpful, I will check it out! I find two of the keys particularly interesting: "A No-Fail Environment: Change what's around you to get rid of binge foods and chances to eat" and "Your Circle of Support: Build relationships that help as you change your life". I have…

It is pretty amazing how once you acclimate to something new, or you avoid something you used to eat too much of, your old tastes change. For example: Back before I started counting calories, I loved to get pancakes drenched in syrup at a famous 24-hour chain. I didn't realize that I was easily gobbling more than a…

I agree, restaurant sizes are out of control. I find myself eating half a plate or less when I go out to eat now. It annoys me how the server sometimes takes that as an affront--"Was it not cooked right? Did it not taste good? Do you need a box so you can eat more later?" I guess they're trained to make sure customers are…

Don't forget about mixing them in shakes. I got a great blender and enjoy a homemade breakfast smoothie every morning. I stuff 1.5 cups of kale into cup, and add Greek yogurt, a banana, frozen fruit, protein powder, and a spoonful of almonds or walnuts and blend until smooth and creamy. It's always sweet and delicious, yet…

I hear you! I live in DC, which is basically a swamp. We've had a brutal summer and the humidity is just disgusting! On top of that, I am a massive, nasty sweater--always have been; I thought losing 76 pounds would make me sweat less, but nope! So when it's that nasty outside, and not much better in my apartment complex's…

I've got several tattoos, but they are all located at spots not really affected by weight--my feet, my ankles, my wrists, and my upper back, beneath my neck. I will say it seems like my wrist tattoos have gotten, well, nicer? A little bigger? I have noticeably lost weight in my forearms and wrists, but my tattoos still…

I started at 290 and lost about 55 pounds in the first six months. My weight loss has slowed waaaaay down since then, though, but I'm keeping at it. I think initially, when you're that overweight, it's pretty easy to lose weight, and then the further along you go, it gets harder. It was pretty easy to see results when I…

I'm looking forward to actually DOING things! I want to sky dive, ride roller coasters again, take a self defense class, and learn to surf. My weight holds me back from so much activity. Now that I've lost 74 pounds, I find it's so much easier to get around, and I can spend hours at museums and art galleries without…

That's awesome! I'm at 216 and already eyeing onederland, which I haven't seen in at least a decade. You should totally treat yourself to a fantastic outfit to show off your rocking body! Congratulations!

jchite84 gave some great advice about breathing. If you find you're getting way out of breath and having to stop, then you aren't keeping a steady rhythm--you're probably holding your breath. Don't! Exhale underwater for a few strokes, then turn your head to one side and take a deep breath through your mouth. Exhale…

I can totally relate to this. I've lost such a great amount of weight and really improved my health, but I still have a long way to go. I find I'm constantly looking at myself, evaluating my arms and my calves, feeling my gut and love handles. I hate how judgmental of my body I've become. And it's not just my own body--I…

I've watched some of the Extreme Weight Loss episodes on YouTube, because I do find them interesting and to some degree motivational (I like Chris Powell, I think he is pretty genuine), but they are definitely unrealistic for the average Joe. I remember there was one woman who apparently developed an eating disorder as a…

I'm going to give you a warning here: My brother-in-law is in the Marines and has struggled with his weight the entire time. I don't have his stats, but I can say that he does not seem to have an inch of fat on him. He is very fit and easily completes all the physical challenges Marines are put through--carrying a hundred…

It's important to remember: One gallon of water weighs 8 pounds! No wonder the scale fluctuates so much; just a little water retention can make the needle wobbly, but it doesn't mean you aren't losing weight.

I hear you! When I was growing up, my family had a lovely house on a quiet lake, with a large floating dock. We'd spend all day on that dock, swimming and boating and sunbathing. By the end of the day, we would all be ravenous and have massive dinners! It makes sense to be hungry when you're a little kid and super active,…

Ha ha, I definitely have a lot of different workout songs, some of which I really like, some of which are kind of campy, and some where I just like the music. I'm going to really embarrass myself here, but here are some of the ones I have that are kind of working out/dancing/moving related or are inspirational are: "Feel…

I like to watch "My 600-pound Life" too. I also like to watch "Supersize vs. Superskinny" and "Fat Doctor." It's important to remind myself why it is so important I lose the weight and not put it off--I don't want to have serious health issues and I don't want to grow any larger than I was at the start!

Hmmm, I would disagree, but we might be viewing "overeating" in two different ways. If you mean the way of, "Wow, this stuffing at Thanksgiving is absolutely amazing," and then you eat an extra helping, then sure, you've overeaten due to taste. But some people, myself included, find us rushing to food even when we just…

I have started doing yoga and parts of it are definitely strength training. We do lots of lunges and squats, some planks and push ups. Not all of it is strength training--a lot of it is just good stretching and working on balance--but you do get some core and leg workout.

I find one problem I have is something I call rage eating. If I have a really bad day at work, get into a serious argument with a loved one, or receive terrible news, I suddenly want to stuff my face with every piece of food in a ten mile radius. Normally small, lightly aggravating things like getting cut off in traffic or…

I've found this kind of challenging too. Some of my coworkers and I recently put together a salad bar at work, with everyone bringing in different foods. A few of them are extremely obese, weighing much more than I do. Sometimes they give me crap about not eating chips with my salad like they do, or eating an apple instead…

Swimming is the best! I love swimming laps, just back and forth, focusing on my breathing. Very relaxing and a good workout. Thanks for posting the links to the calorie counters, but they show something vastly different than my heart rate monitor. My HRM says I've only burnt about 400 calories after an hour of laps (I'm…
