My trainer gave me a high five today and said it was a good workout! It doesn't seem like much but she really rarely gives praise (which is fine, it's just her personality), so for me this was a big deal and I could tell she really meant it. Also, I have been doing the one-on-one training to practice/prepare to move into a…

Awesome, thanks. My trainer/boot camp instructor taught me how to use the rower so I feel more confident now that I know how to use it with correct form. I saw the Stamina one you mentioned on Amazon and was thinking about it. It's great to know it stands up to that usage and is quiet. Thanks for letting me know!

Thanks! You can do this! : ) As for what you said about cooking mostly at home, MFP will be a huge help when you can create your own recipes in the recipe builder and then quickly add them to your diary. Using a food scale will become quick and easy when you get used to it, just adding stuff to your plate/pot and "tare"ing…

I had the same shock when I first started logging. I had thought that as I got to the end of my 20s my metabolism was slowing down because I couldn't lose weight as easily as I used to. I actually thought I knew how to count calories with ballpark estimates but it was clear I didn't. I also realized that I was ordering…

I'm from Boston! (At least Boston greater area.)

I don't really feel like eating fruit is necessarily better than eating vegetables nutrition-wise. I'm not a nutritionist but fruit does have more sugar, after all, and I think that a lot of veggies have the same vitamin/mineral benefits as fruits. (Google "foods highest in vitamin C," etc.) I second what people have said…

I made a stuffed pepper recipe. 4 large red/yellow peppers 1/2 cup diced onion 1 tbsp minced garlic 3 cups low fat low salt cottage cheese (the low salt part is important - regular cottage cheese is so salty) 2 eggs 1/4 tsp olive oil to grease pan You can use whatever herbs/spices you like but I like the following (it…

Thanks! I'm glad you guys advised me to phase in slowly because I wasn't really thinking of that, but it makes sense. I will check out the aqua fit and zumba, and consider swimming too. I actually like the rowing when we do it quickly as a warm-up/interval in the boot camp so using it as cardio sounds like a great idea!…

@tank1539 Thanks for the article! That was helpful. I will ask my doctor when I go for my physical soon as well, and my PT as well at my last session. Luckily I'm in my late 20s and have pretty good overall health.
-
Thank you for the advice! I will definitely go gradually, and you're right, I was coming from a suuper low fitness level. So yeah, I will phase up slowly from 3 days to 5-6. My PT plan is kind of varied . . . some stuff like bridges, crunches, "bicycle" exercise, that type of stuff, plus weight machines, and some…

I'm between 5'7" and 5'8" and whenever I'm around 145 lbs, my mom starts telling me I'm too thin or making veiled comments about how I'm "getting so skinny, where are your boobs!" (which is a really rude comment to make anyway). Now I agree 145 is not overweight for my height, but it's certainly not too thin! Also as I've…

This is me too. I have seen progress over 5 weeks of working out 2-4 times a week (plus like 2+ hour walks and more general activity), but it's slow. I'm still way above average. : (

This is really interesting - the part about how you feel less fit. Do you think you really are less fit, or is it just your impression? I think sometimes it's hard for us to judge our own fitness - but then again I am noticing my own strength increasing (e.g. picking up heavy objects) about 5 weeks into my own new fitness…

This is exactly it! I didn't feel out of shape at the time but it's only now that I'm realizing how out of shape I really was. I'm definitely committed to keeping my body in better condition strength and endurance-wise from now on.

I agree, but I wasn't looking at the idea of people who are really muscular - I meant the reverse. People like me who are "healthy" according to BMI, but in fact are not healthy because their body composition has too much fat and not enough muscle. I definitely agree that the BMI is a useful measure. I just meant that I…

Are you depressed? I'm not a doctor but overeating, tiredness etc after losing a loved one could be depression. It might be worth going to your GP or finding someone who can help with grief counseling, etc. Also, this is hard but try not to focus on hating yourself, because we don't want to care for and nurture…

Oh, yeah, I think it's useful but has flaws. Like specifically regarding me, it doesn't deal with the question of whether your weight is muscle or fat. So for me, although my BMI was 23 and I was "healthy weight," in fact I had barely enough muscle to literally support my body (as my PT told me again today), so obviously I…

Yeah, I had always thought that being active in regular life meant you were at least a little bit fit, but I am definitely reconsidering! I bet that poor sleep also plays a part, since sleep is where you heal, right? I probably had insufficient sleep as well since I used to clock about 5-6 hours a night (although for a…

alfonsinarosinsky, I'm only 27, female, nonsmoker and nondrinker, and never had any kids. So I didn't think it would be so bad! I should have mentioned that stuff in the first post. emmalpoppy, thanks for the recommendation. I have a physical soon so I will ask my doctor about the vitamins and so on. I know that my uncle…

I'm not in the weight range you're asking but I'm very unfit (no muscle, no cardio endurance, no flexibility at all) and I used Jillian Michaels' "Beginner Shred" Workout 1 video (you can buy for 3.99 on Amazon to watch on your computer) and it was the ONLY workout I've ever tried that didn't make me feel like I was dying.…

I don't usually listen to rock/metal, but yeah, when I'm working out it's definitely motivational. Thanks for the recs!

They could be riding their bike on a bike path, like in a wooded area. That's probably safer to do with headphones although maybe still not great. Thanks for all the tips on the music, guys! Katzedernacht, that's a great playlist : )

I haven't really used spotify, but I will check it out! Thanks.

Seconding what's been said. You don't want "fast weight loss," you want to permanently change your eating habits and have a healthier life. 7 lbs in a month is a lot for most people (2 lbs/week is the maximum recommended for most people unless you have like 300+ lbs to lose) and your calorie intake is way too little. Also:…

I'm a woman, currently at 150 but I have very little muscle so it doesn't sit well on me - I'm "skinny fat" although not that skinny. I think that I would look better at 150 if I was way better toned/muscled. In the past I was 140 and felt great. I'm aiming for 135, but with way more muscle mass than I currently have.

Are we doubting the honesty of users on here who've reported their experiences with craving and longing for certain foods? In my mind, the distinction between naming this situation of helplessly obsessing/craving/indulging in food as "addiction" or not doesn't really matter. The point is that some people find that certain…

I've heard that as well, that milk is promoted as healthy in the USA because of milk farmers wanting to sell product, rather than because of real health benefits. I'm not particularly looking for calcium, though, more protein or just eating it because I like the taste. I can't have most meat and beans so protein is a…

Thanks, guys. This is helpful! I guess I'll stick with the milk. : )

Thanks guys! I don't have any medical condition requiring me to restrict sugar. And I actually prefer the taste of fat free to full fat milk . . . it's almost as refreshing as water to me (lol, it's true though).

I definitely recommend the herbs and spices. For me personally, adding some thyme to a recipe gives it the richness of flavor that I want without the salt. Low-sodium broth can also add some depth of flavor, or vinegar like the person above said. I find it really shocking when I look for recipes and see heaps of recipes…
