  • You definitely need to find out if your hypothyroidism is caused by Hashimoto's. I was diagnosed with Hashi's at age 12 and have been on meds since that time. I'm now 35 and my dosage increased from 25 mcg (I took this same dose from age 12-25) and am now up to 150 mcg with my TSH being 4.5 (it was at 40 last year). I had…
  • I cook mainly from scratch on my own and plan my grocery shopping weekly by what is on sale. Doing it this way I'm able to feed a family of 4 in a medium cost-of-living area for about $550/month. I think the boxes sound like a fun addition to the menu if you are a couple or a single person but for our family, no way. Not…
  • You'll have to manually subtract fiber and sugar alcohols unless you build your own food database (which would be exhausting). I have seen that some people have added entries for items using net carbs. You could always search for the item by searching for "halo top ice cream net carbs" instead of just "halo top ice cream".…
  • Yes, the recipe builder tool is a great resource. I use it in this very same way so my diary will sometimes show that I had 191 servings of an item but that is because I call each gram a serving. Last night I made cauliflower fried rice. I manually entered all ingredient and it weighed about 350 grams when finished. I…
  • You can check for accuracy by placing an item on there with a known weight. There are times mine goes crazy and I have to turn it off and back on again. Make sure it is on a flat surface and that what you are weighing isn't accidentally leaning up against anything nearby. With you PB powder, did you pack it into the…
  • Wow! I feel like I did make lifestyle choices that increased my risk--but no--I did not choose to be Type 2. If I had known many years ago that fat wasn't my enemy it could have positively impacted my health. This is so highly irritating. I had Gestational Diabetes twice (and back-to-back because my kiddos are only 16…
  • Coffee just helps me tolerate mornings!
  • Unless you are diabetic, in which case this could be very bad advice. If you aren't diabetic, you can safety count net carbs. If you are diabetic you'll need to be careful as fiber doesn't exactly "cancel out" carbohydrates exactly that simply and your glucose could still be affected.
  • YES! I have OCD as well and weight loss/exercise/weighing food can quickly become an obsession. I have to be very careful because I find that if I can't weigh something properly I will obsess over it and it is horrible. My husband helps to keep me in check. He helps to warn me when he sees that obsessive/destructive…
  • Thank you! I eat around 100 g carbs a day (total, not net). Right now I'm 30% carbs, 40% fat, 30% protein. As for fruits, unfortunately I don't eat many due to their high natural sugar content. When I do I stick to strawberries and blueberries. I have the very occasional apple with peanut butter. I struggle with getting my…
  • I agree with you! I can't track too much at once. I track my macros and keep an eye on my fiber and that is enough for me! Making it too complicated is overwhelming and in my opinion, a recipe for disaster!
  • I get a lot of recipes from Pinterest! The swapping wasn't too awful for me (although I do look longingly at plates of pasta) but it does take a little planning. I also do eat fast food! I still like my occasional Quarter Pounder from McDonalds but I get a side salad instead of the fries. I also enjoy what I call a "naked…
  • I eat a diet with those same macro settings and it works very well (for me). I love love love carbs but as a diabetic I do have to moderate them. I get about 100 g of carbs each day which allows me to still eat grains and some fruit, as well as treats like ice cream! I swap out veggies for a lot of carbs and try to stay…
  • I love some olive oil (the light tasting kind) with red wine vinegar and pepper. I love pepper on my salad!
  • I aim for below 100 g of total carbs. On weekdays I'm often below 80.
  • My breakfast and lunch tend to be lighter meals so I do snack at work. My breakfast is normally 100ish calories and lunch is between 200-300. I eat low carb and enjoy berries as a snack and cashews. The cashews aren't low calorie but if your meals are light you can afford snacks. I prefer to eat throughout the day instead…
  • I'm low carb! Feel free to add me! I'm also diabetic. Low carb has been phenomenal for my blood sugar.
  • Too much is when it negatively impacts other important parts of your life. If you are calling out of work to go to the gym, or neglecting your children, or spending money on the gym membership over paying your mortgage--that is a problem. If you are able to find balance between all of the important things in your life and…
  • I love that they are selling local produce (and other goods). I'll definitely stop by now! I'm sure it will be absolutely MOBBED for the first few weeks after they open so I'll saunter over after the crowds die down.
  • Are you eating from hunger or is there something else going on in your life (major life change, stress, etc)? My eating habits, if I'm not careful, tend to coincide with what stress is going on in my life. It is definitely a challenge to stick to things. Packing my lunches and snacks for work really helps me to stay on…
  • We are getting our first Whole Foods this spring. I am definitely going to check it out but honestly, I'm not sure why they are putting one here. I live in an area with phenomenal farmer's markets and local produce. Does anyone know if Whole Foods is a chain who uses local produce? Other local chains in the area do buy…
  • I lose weight while eating out 1-2 times a week. I pre-log my food according to the restaurant's nutritional data and eat 200-300 calories under my goal for that day (and lighter throughout the day--salad for lunch, yogurt for breakfast, an ounce of nuts for a snack) to adjust for their inconsistency when portioning sides…
  • You definitely need to see a dietitian. Are you checking your blood sugar at all? If so, that will give you an idea of how the foods you are already eating are affecting your glucose readings. Each person handles carbohydrates a bit differently due to height, weight, activity level, etc. If your blood sugar is truly only…
  • I love my Instant Pot. Sure, I too like to cook using my stove but with working a full-time job, having two young children, and having a spouse who is a principal (and therefore works crazy hours), getting dinner onto the table in a timely manner sometimes requires quicker cooking methods. Pressure cookers are less like…
  • Anyone want to be friends with a non-Ketoer (I eat around 50-100 g of carbs daily) and share meal ideas? At this point I don't want to go into ketosis but I love new meal ideas that significantly cut carbs.
  • I eat low carb and enjoy eggs, lunchmeat, cucumbers with sour cream, cheddar and crackers, berries, yogurt, cashews, string cheese, and pepperoni.
  • I am curious as to how your labs come back. I have been frustrated with lack of weight loss (I am using a food scale though and double-checking entries). I did have one day where I was over my goal (still under what I need to maintain or gain) and I'm honest with myself about that. It happened. Today is a new day. I do…
  • Thanks so much guys! These are some great ideas.
  • I did LCHF for about 8 months before falling off of the wagon (here I am again...back on it) and I was able to cut my oral diabetes medications by 75% in that time. Of course I was down about 50 lbs and exercising regularly, which also helped with lowering blood glucose, but being strict with carbs is where the credit…
