  • If your thyroid levels are well regulated you should be able to lose with no more (or at least not significantly more) difficulty than anyone else.
  • The advice to add more fiber is standard and well meant, but do keep in mind that for at least some people reducing fiber seems to be the better choice. In your shoes I'd consider taking a stool softener, some magnesium oxide before bed and having a cup of coffee first thing in the morning.
  • I believe the newest research says that up to seven eggs a week is fine. They do contain cholesterol, but it's now known that dietary cholesterol has a minimal effect on blood cholesterol. So in your shoes I'd go ahead and have my eggs a few times a week. My go to breakfast is a slice of Arnold country sourdough bread…
  • My normal lunch salad is 3 oz. cooked skinless chicken breast hearts of romaine green and red bell peppers banana peppers cucumber slices Either cottage cheese or a sprinkling of shredded cheddar For the dressing I use a teaspoon of olive oil mixed with whatever type of vinegar appeals to me that day
  • Ummm . . . you do realize that water is a chemical compoud?

  • X2 One does not "reset" the thyroid. That's woo.
  • The white fudge covered ones that are available between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Thank goodness they're only available for a limited time each year!!
  • I've been loosely following a low FODMAP diet for awhile, but I think I'm going to have to ratchet it down tighter. I slipped up last week and ate some salsa (onions) and regular (not lactose free) cottage cheese, and I paid for it dearly over the weekend. I don't think you should have any trouble meeting just about any…
  • Coffee has many health benefits. Unless you have issues with caffeine then it's not bad for you at all. As others have said, log whatever you add to it.

  • I'm not. I was when I was younger, but then I lost 60+ pounds about 27 years ago and maintained that until this past year my thyroid function took a nosedive and one of the (many) effects of that was that I gained some weight. I got diagnosed with hypothyroidism and medicated and lost it all. All while drinking diet Pepsi…
  • As I posted earlier, I drink diet soda every day. I also use a bit of Splenda in my coffee. And yet I have zero cravings for sweets. I was thinking over the holidays (as I watched others scarfing down all the sweet treats) that they have about as much appeal to me as broccoli or carrots. If I was really hungry and there…
  • In your shoes I'd get my thyroid checked. A full panel, not just the TSH.
  • We're going out tonight. So I had eggs for breakfast and a salad (with no bad FODMAP ingredients) for lunch. So if I have a bit of bread tonight I'm still keeping my total FODMAP intake for the day low. It works fairly well for me, but it's all very individual.
  • I haven't done a strict FODMAP elimination diet, but I do try to limit my intake of those foods. It's helped my IBS symptoms tremendously.
  • I"m down 25 pounds since August, and I have 12-16 oz. of diet Pepsi every day (more on weekends when we eat out). I've consumed diet soft drinks for 25+ years and have never noticed that they have any effect on weight loss or gain. In case anyone is wondering, I choose diet drinks because I vastly prefer the taste. The…
  • Sigh. I posted the article because it's easy to read (for those who prefer that) and because it has links to actual studies. Key takeaways from the studies linked in the article:
  • No. That has been disproven..
  • I'm 53 and hypothyroid and have lost 25 pounds since August.
  • I prefer my water flavored. As in coffee, tea and Diet Pepsi. If I had to drink plain water . . . no, I don't even want to consider the horror.
  • I use 2 tablespoons of half and half every time I have a cup of coffee, which is about four times a day. It's well worth the calories to me. Plus it adds a bit of calcium and protein to my diet. I've also used Fairlife, the ultra filtered milk made by Coke. It only has 150 calories per cup (less than 10 calories per…
  • I wouldn't extrapolate anything from a one time experience. IMO that's where a LOT of bad advice comes from. There are many things that affect appetite. Not the least of which are how much or little you've consumed in the past few days, how much exercise you've gotten, etc. I find coffee to be a filling and satisfying…
  • You're not alone. January and February are hard. I think of them as my hungry months. The only good thing about summer is that the heat and humidity kill my appetite.
  • It really doesn't matter what your dosage is. What matters are your thyroid numbers (all of them as a whole, not just the TSH). Some people will be able to achieve very good numbers on a low dosage of thyroid hormone and others need a much higher dose. But I really don't understand your doctor's thinking. I *believe* that…
  • Well . . . the short answer is that yes, you could gain weight from a cheat day. The longer answer is -- Just looking at math it's relatively simple. An excess of 3,500 calories above your TDEE will cause you to gain one pound. So if you ate (for example) 1170 extra calories above your TDEE you might gain one-third of a…
  • I don't believe he's entirely wrong. Often the mantra on here of CICO is overly simplistic, IMO. (Well, I actually think lots of posts on here are overly simplistic.) While I don't disagree that CICO does work ('cause thermodynamics), I think how easily/effortlessly it works can vary a lot depending on the individual and…
  • I love ours! I'm a minimalist when it comes to lots of things, and especially to small appliances. But I wouldn't be w/o a George Foreman.
  • I get lots of steps even on rainy days when I stay home inside all day. I do laps around the kitchen and dining room, five to ten minutes at a time. I can achieve a fairly brisk pace (over 120 steps a minute). Of course that will depend on how big your house is and how things are laid out. As far as Fitbit settings -- I…
