@lporter229 What an awful experience! I never knew why I was such a control freak as to always take my car key with me while running (unless starting from home), but now you've explained why I do that. When I got a key with electronics and a battery in it for locking/unlocking the door, I just started putting in in a…

I have run a negative split in a marathon once in 5 finishes. I spent 16 miles telling myself, it's too early to work this hard. Felt great at 17 miles, struggled from 20 to 23 miles, and was totally pumped for the last mile because by then I knew I was going to PR and negative split. Turned out that if I took out the time…

Day two of stress fracture, consolidated reply. @Avidkeo @ddmom0811 I had worse stress fractures of the metatarsals in my left foot in 2014. I was 80% sure that this was a stress fracture before I went in, but hoping it would turn out to be a tendon that could recover in 3 weeks. I wrestled with denial for about half an…

@lporter229 It's just the time in the training cycle for it to be that way. At the end of my 20 miles Saturday, I felt almost like I'd run a marathon. Then my easy 6 on Sunday felt like really tired legs. Throw out the "Trust the Training" mantra. Replace it with, "Less is More." Run less this week. Doesn't matter if your…

@kgirlhart I'm late to the party, but I endorse the recommendations to suck it up and get new shoes. New shoes are much cheaper than a new round of sports doc or physical therapy visits. In the trying to do what I recommend department, this week I retired a pair of shoes that went over 500 miles. No obvious problems, just…

For your first marathon, a half marathon as a training race is a good time to practice running at marathon pace in a race environment. If you lose discipline and run too fast, you won't mess yourself up as much as running too fast in an actual marathon. But running the half, with other runners passing you, and holding to…

Rest day today. Getting some household and financial maintenance stuff done. My bib for the BAA 5K came in today's mail. For any stalkers out there, it's bib 702. I don't expect to push for a PR at the BAA 5K; I'll be happy to run 19:59, and live with 20:30 if need be.

I don't use a hydration pack, but the question seems to be about the same for a hydration belt. When it's hot and humid, I'll wear the belt for every training run, even the short 4-5 mile runs. When the weather is nice, I may run as much as 8 miles (~1 hour) without water. When I tried 10 miles without water, I found out…

@PastorVincent Actually, I did not recommend the Wunjo. I was considering trying a water pack of some kind until early 2016, when I learned that Boston does not allow them. If I couldn't use the pack in my longest, most important race of the year, I didn't see the point in buying one and learning to run in it. I stuck with…

My guess is that you ran the race pretty hard, and went anaerobic. I've had that happen in a few races, usually races where I'm running pretty hard and getting a really good finishing time; then very late I might need to slow down so I don't puke and lose more time. I take this as a sign that you left it all on the course,…

@quilteryoyo I'm glad your prognosis is positive. I have a counter-example to the horror stories. The very first 5K I ran, I was 55 years old. I finished in 21 minutes even (20:59.9x), won my age group, and was ahead of everyone older than me . . . except some guy who was over 60? Later, I learned that guy was a really…

@99clmsntgr Yes, that experience was worth a lot. My target marathon pace is 7:20 per mile. The original idea was to practice marathon pace. Meb pacing 1:35 talked me into upping that to 7:15 per mile. The interesting thing is that there was a substantial crowd going out with Meb the first few miles; I didn't feel the…

I trained almost to injury for my first Boston. In hindsight, the reason I didn't get injured was my coach telling me firmly to start taper early when I was really beat up and discouraged. And then I managed to injure myself by running too much, too soon, too hard after Boston that year. I did better with my second Boston,…

Heh. The lady at registration said I wouldn't show in the Dolphin Challenge standings. I went to look at how it's scored, and there I was! The score is simply the sum of your 8K time and your half marathon time; in the Dolphin Challenge I finished 17th of 1000 overall, and 1st of 64 in my age group.

a) I've wasted a lot of race entry fees from registering when I'm healthy then being injured and unable to run. But if I register later, it's more expensive. *shrug* You just play the odds as best you can. b) About two and a half years ago, I was talking to a female runner who said in passing that she wasn't sure she…

I would not feel bad about running a half two weeks before a marathon; but if the marathon is an A race, the half would need to be a training race, run at marathon pace. One week out, I don't think it would be smart to even put myself into a race environment for a half marathon. I've done a 10K a week before, and I've done…

. . . and the obligatory 4-medal bling shot: 8K finisher's medal, USATF age grade medal, half marathon finisher's medal, Dolphin Challenge medal. USATF Masters 8K at the Towne Bank Shamrock 8K this morning. I turned in a middle of the pack performance in the context of a USATF championship race: 32:06 gun time, 64th of 153 overall, 10th of 21 in the M 60-64 age group. Because it was in conjunction with the open Shamrock 8K, I got a finisher's medal. Because I age…

Rest day today. Spent 4 hours in the car getting to Virginia Beach. Several annoying stretches of construction and traffic, but much less stressful with plenty of time built in. I'll call the plan of taking 2 days to get here a winner. I actually got to the expo before it closed, picked up my bibs, and went to talk to the…
